Glad he said that, should remove any doubts as to what he meant.
Iām not sure if this is a calculated move or his emotions got the best of him. Either way heās called out the folks in Charlotte who are major players. They all prob said nice things when he started, but itās time to put your money where your mouth is and suddenly no one is around. Iām glad heās saying something.
For too long our leadership within the university accepted whatever came their way. Now we want a seat at the big boy table and everyone is like, no, no, no, we canāt have that and Poggi is calling them out. If we win, I do think support will come. But if HBO cameras are rolling and this is a storyline, we will know who our friends are and who looks to turn their back. Iām all for it. Iām sure it will split some folks, but we canāt accept status quo any longer.
I agree wholeheartedly with Asimo. They ( the Charlotte establishment) want to brag about CLT the city. Ever now and then they want to ask is CLT a world class city. Hell no without proper funding of the major university carrying the cityās name.
I think someone else nailed it. This is perfect timing to get on HBO documentary. Then mix this with a good first season under Poggi. That may be the combination to get the money flowing.
Someone stated corporations do not give without a reason. I disagree with this. BOA recently gave $10 million to JC Smith with the aspirations of it becoming a top 10 HBCU. I think that some of the new corporations that have moved here are looking for places to donate their money. I hope that these corporations are not waiting so they can give to the ACC after it relocates here.
This city needs to be called out for its neglect of its largest university. The corporate execs need to have their feet held to the fire.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but did I see where Truist has not renewed its contract with Wake Forest for naming rights of its football stadium? Isnāt one of the large donors to UNCC?
Wakeās stadium is now Allegacy Credit Union Stadium, or something like that.
Worried a bit that Truist was just cost cutting. But if they were instead thinking they were over concentrated in Winston, perhaps that opens the doorā¦
Our fans have complained for years that our budget was too small, we get too much money from student fees, not enough donations, and not enough large donors. And many blame the AD for not doing enough to change it. But the second Poggi says it everyone starts freaking out.
Complacency is for
If we want to be big dogs, then we need to start acting like one. This state, city and county arenāt going to just hand us money without asking or demanding it. They havenāt before and will not now.
If we pissed a few people off, then I say ākudosā. What the worst thing that will happen; they wonāt donate. Well guess what, they arenāt donating now, so if they donāt respond with $$ by tickling them, then beat them over the head with a bat and see it that works.
If it takes championships to get this area on board and excited about their first class local university (2nd largest in the state), then grab the life jackets, because ship is going down.
Sounds like Biff has 4 people on board. How many does Mike Hill have on his tally board???
Heās got some nice softball donors lined up.
Just so thereās no confusion, Mike is not on vacation. Without going into detail heās dealing with a family matter.
I want our programs to be successful but Iāve always been kinda baffled as to why people think other people/corporations owe them a fucking thing.
Guess itās just my backward ass country hick mentality.
Agreed.
No reason at all for businesses, whales or large corporations to piss away money. If you have never won a gameā¦everā¦as a D1 HC anywhereā¦kinda ballsy to demand money just because you āsayā you can build a winner that will justify the investment. If you had done it before and had a track record of successā¦I get it. But did he really expect local businesses and corporations to simply stroke checks based on his hubris alone???
If the companies believe they will get a return on their investmentā¦they will invest. At this pointā¦what has been done to make anyone think there is ANY return on investment right now for Charlotte Football or MBB.
At his pointā¦weāre asking for charitable donations NOT investments. THATās the difference. People with $$ want to be entertained and companies with $$ much more likely to invest than donate. Gotta have an entertaining product and give companies a reason to invest.
Firmly disagree with the last posts.
But I wanted to say - if you havenāt been over to the 2023 football thread, there is a damn good breakdown by a site called volumepig. No idea, but itās good. Go read it.
I get the win and weāll invest mantra. But I had the opportunity to work at Colorado when the football team was terrible. Look up Jon Embreeās second season. I was there for that. They were bad for like 20 straight years. Hired Rick George and he got thisā¦
This during the worst stretch of football in their history.
So to tell me people donāt invest when a program is struggling or trying to get established is ridiculous. It takes people with a vision and willingness to stand up for what they believe in. If you donāt get on board now then eff off when we see success. Good for Biff.
Biff has been unleashedā¦
Thatās funny! I donāt care who you are!
Judging from Twitter, this seems to have turned out to be a positive.
Itās the most App thing ever to jump into a conversation uninvited and then accuse the other person of paying to much attention to you.
App sucks.
Yup they should have stayed in their lane haha.
Give me a break! That is way over dramatic. There are tons of programs (smaller than ours, by a long shot) with no big record of success that still are supported by many local and regional businesses. Its about supporting local amenities. Its done ALL the time, but we havenāt seemed to ever get our āshareā of it, considering the market in which we reside.
