Corporations donât just give money. There has to be a value proposition for them.
We have to put a winning product on the field first.

clt asks if biff helped our fundraising efforts by calling out local businesses
I donât disagree but I hate to enlighten everyone but todays environment is a such. More money = More Wins. I also understand that More Wins = More Money. The problem is that we seem to have neither, so unless Biff has a spectacular year (which we all are hoping for); then #wearef&$*%ed.
I still like what Biff is doing as many of the billionaires today got seed money from an idea without an actual product to present. Most of us keep whining that the community just isnât investing in us, well wins do indeed talk, but until we are consistently competing for conference championships, feathers will have to be ruffled once in a while. Itâs better to know sooner than later that this great experiment has merit or morons.
When I heard that, I was thinking that someone needs to show Biff a clip of that meeting where, IIRC, UNC BoG members said that if NC students wanted to experience football, they should go to chapel hill or NCSU.
Thatâs what we have always been up against. I saw that same mentality for 10 years at the Observer, and heard it on local media, especially WFNZ in the late 90s and early 2000s. Those folks in those places at that time repressed the hell out of our program. And the UNC laden BoG not so secretly cheered them on. Itâs not just apathy or disinterest (thatâs a newer development since 2005-06), itâs a sentiment of actively working against the potential of this program.
I think once Biff understands that, heâll do one of two things: 1) say âfuckitâ and bolt, or 2) take on the challenge (which I think is his general nature).
I think he is doing the right thing by airing out the issue, provided he backs it up with performance on the field. Yes, the initial reactions may be negative, but if he starts picking up wins with the football program and creating memorable moments, guilt will start to settle in, as will the appeal of rooting for the underdog.
Ultimately, thatâs what kept me around as a fan for so long. When I went to work or heard the radio guys putting us down, it pissed me off and only made me want to double down.
Thatâs why I am still on here, years later, almost daily. And why I still show up at games. I identify with that âoh yeah?â reaction to âyou canât do thatâ.
Poggi did not say anything that was inaccurate or inappropriate. If itâs a bad look in your eyes, itâs because you donât want to acknowledge the actual situation. Besides, it canât be all huggable moments to have a great HBO program. There needs to be some adversity and drama that ruffles some feathers.
That equivalent $25 million in HBO branding can either work FOR big business in Charlotte, or can be used to expose their lack of support. That can be cranked to another level when the player start stacking WINS!
Thatâs a damn good point about the HBO exposure. And it was probably part of Poggiâs thinking and pitch when he interviewed.
Any business that gets on board will get all the exposure of however many viewings (repeat?) there are of the show. How much is that worth? Why wouldnât you jump at that chance?
Itâs a potentially low cost / high reward investment.
Buried in that interview was that he mentioned us being on HBO 11-12 times, sounded like it would be an all season thing. Thatâs monstrous if accurate.
Too I would imagine those cameras could/may be with Biff when he calls on a big company, thatâs a chance to really showcase your corporation in perpetuity.
I agree that everything Biff said is pretty accurate. However, what made me sigh a little was his âdemeanorâ. He didnât just sound aggravated, he almost sounded resigned (defeated) to our situation. This is the POLAR opposite of his attitude for his first few months here. I remember him making statements like âI know a lot of those people (corporate heads) and I am coming to talk themâŚâ. In other words, he was talking the talk, but now it seems he has discovered its not that easyâŚif youâre going to talk the talk, you have to walk the walkâŚlets see how tight you are with those corporate leaders that you said you âknewâ.
Seems that theyâre going to make him prove it first.
clt says mike cannot be happy this morning.
Mike us happy on vacation. Great timing
He probably found out this is an ACC state and if you arenât in the ACC you get the cold shoulder, we have known this for 40 years⌠he hasnât. Like others have said if we canât get the city behind a guy like this than whatâs the point, letâs go down to div 2 not botherâŚ
Hopefully it was just a way to get people talking about us, we also have to do half way decent this year, a 3-9 record isnât going to get corporations on board eitherâŚ
Everything he says in one of these interviews is premeditated. The way he says it may be a little off the cuff, but he knows what he is doing (or at least intends to do).

Looks like some fans didnât take things well
Genius move! Go on radio with probably HBO cameras rolling and say, âCity of Charlotte. I am bringing you big time football. If you want to keep it then you need to put the resources into it.â
I love it. That is how you start a fire. If he starts rolling in some wins this fall, I expect that interview to be the catalyst for the cash flow. Budget cycles for many companies for 2024 are being finalized in July. This man knows what he is doing.
Biff being clear what his intent is:
I also donât have an issue with biff calling out the corporate people in Charlotte. They want this city to compete with the likes of seattle and San Fran but they barely do anything to invest in the local colleges. Amazon heavily invests in Washington because they understand they need a great research college in Seattle. Same thing with the late Paul Allen who was a Washington State grad. He still heavily invested in the huskies because he knew how important they were for Microsoft to succeed. Even the big wigs in Pittsburgh understood if they wanted to revitalize the area they would need to heavily invest in the local colleges so they put a lot of effort in making carnegie mellon and pitt into great research institutes. Meanwhile the local corporations just ignore the local colleges and wonder why we canât land companies like Amazon here.
