Charlotte to Hire Michigan associate Head Coach Biff Poggi as new Head Football Coach

Call donors out. Be cocky. Walk around like you own the place.

But

You better win as you say you will.

I am with Biff. He has all the friends he could ever need. He isnā€™t here to make friends, he wants to win. Damn the torpedos, full steam ahead.

He should be calling out Bank of America and Duke Energy. Mr. Duke didnā€™t build his legacy for the southeast or for any political rhetoric. He dropped his equivalent $Billions on the potential of the Carolinas to achieve together all that they have. And Mr. Duke set his final time here in Charlotte. If Duke Energy canā€™t support a Charlotte University to fully realize its full potential with their support, Mr. Duke would be ashamed of them;. I have no doubt.

Now is also time to tap Hugh one more again before he is lost to time. Bank of America is Charlotte and visa versa

If he does start to call out donors and the local businesses and loses this fall, itā€™s not going to be pretty. But I donā€™t think this guy is in it for the money. He wants to win. Not make a name for himself so he can move up the ladder and coach a ā€œbiggerā€ program. Heā€™s past that. Heā€™s looking at 2 years from now getting that automatic bid and making a run at a national championship.

But he knows thatā€™s impossible if our operating budget is $5 million short of the lowest operating budget in the AAC. Heā€™s basically telling the folks in charlotte, this is possible with your support. Do you not want this? This is a win for everyone in this town. So it makes you wonder what these charlotte companies are looking at. Or how they look at the university is the better question.

Poggi will simply walk away if thereā€™s no support. Heā€™s not going to waste his time and why would he? For the first time weā€™ve got someone whoā€™s not content with just cashing checks and going through the motions with our school. Thatā€™s how we got here in the first place. To many people satisfied with average at best.

clt says you donā€™t reach execs at local businesses on am sports radio.

Though technically itā€™s FM sports radio now. Something ESPN Charlotte needs to get on board with.

Guys like Poggi never plan to fail. Thereā€™s never a real plan for if he should fail. That shit will always work itself out, unless maybe you donā€™t plan on succeeding

Thought the interviewer did a great job to try and get him back on subject, what about the team!ā€¦.

Can we beat Ga St, SMU or Navy? By mid Octoberā€¦. How many players
are we going to lose to NIL if we are bottom 20 FBS?

Charlotte is not the capital in banking of the world & US, but ok understand the spin continuesā€¦call to action is good.

You are in a conference where there is lots of $$ and Sports management DNAā€¦. Tulane Glazers (Man U & Buccaneers, they are brilliant in Sports) & Bensons, the Hunts, SMU (Chiefsā€¦), this is not new information on what we are up against, have to compete on the field, not easy.

Do you think the HBO storytelling has gone negative for him/us? Last two interviews have been negative on the situation and we are less than 60 days from season startingā€¦

clt says biff isnā€™t having a good day

Sounds like the HBO mini series is the only thing we have going for us, Poggi seems to be ready to give up if the Charlotte community does not get behind this team financially and we have not even played a game under him yet

But what I dont understand is how does a school like UTSA which started football in 2011 seem to be able to construct a borderline top 25 team dealing with the transfer portal and NIL, I get that it is Texas one of the best high school recruiting states, but they lack history, and have to compete with all of the Texas schools for recruits, and yet they produce results on the field as a new program, what are they doing that we are not?

Is the San Antonio community more supportive than the Charlotte community in regards to the local FBS football team, Is San Antonio a bigger and better business hub than Charlotte? Is it just that Texas has that many more high level FBS recruits to choose from than the NC/SC/and Georgia recruiting ground? I t would seem like they would have similar problems to us in terms of recruiting as a new program against more established historical programs regionally, but yet there they are on the verge of becoming a top 25 ranked program

Or is Poggi wrong and coaches DO win football games, and we just havenā€™t hired guys that can win with the talent that we are able to recruit

Weā€™re playing with the big boys now, look around the conference at the facilities, projects, and budgets. Money doesnā€™t guarantee wins but with NIL in addition now you have to at least be comparable with your peers to be able to compete. Itā€™s going to be more difficult to do what WKU did in CUSA, win with a budget on the low end.

Now this is a tough time to get companies to invest, but still if we had gotten them on board during the good times economically we wouldnā€™t be so far behind (and hadnā€™t whiffed on our first two coaching hires).

One thing is for sure, I put more credence into what we were hearing from the basketball search after this interview.

Weā€™re swimming in the deep end now, if we donā€™t start firing on all cylinders weā€™re going to be in trouble. If we do though, the next step up would be glory. Iā€™m still processing everything so sorry if I am rambling. It was refreshing and tough at the same time to hear this today.

What is Biff doing??? Going after our fanbase

Yeah, not a good look.

I think Biff is realizing how low We are on the sports Totem Pole in Charlotte.
I hate this whole NIL deal and it will probably kill us. I think it is playing out
Just like most of us thought it would.
Hopefully he puts together a magical year and the swith flips.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease. If everyone on this forum were to begin writing well thought out letters to the Observer as well as corporate executives, it could have an impact. Nine of the 13 Fortune 500 companies based in NC are in the Charlotte area. And 17 of the 28 Fortune 1000 companies in NC are based in Charlotte.

Our alumni have got to let these companies know that we give a damn. It is one thing to bitch and complain on here when it means nothing. But a well thought out letter to a corporate executive could have an impact.

Can you imagine the uprise from Cheat fans if they felt UNC was being overlooked. CLT fans must show the corporate crowd thst we do give a damn.

All of this is taking place and the ACC schools are coming into CLT turf with their hand out as the conference moves itā€™s HQ here in July.

Of course, one latter will have no impact. But 25 letters to the observer plus 5 letters to each ceo of the fortune 1000 based here could have an impact. Is it possible that Biff was trying to wake up the fan base to take a stand just like he is doing.

It seems like it is now or never. I will say look at the impact of mothers against drunk driving. They totally changed the culture in the US. This was a grassroots effort by a small group of women starting out. They accomplished their goals be putting pressure on politicians. We need to put pressure on the corporate executives. Maybe this can also be done by utilizing the sports departments at the local news channels.

I will say that a lot of energy is poured into this forum and a lot of it is negative energy. Use that energy in a positive way to help Biff get the word out.

Biff is not being negative, but he is a realist. Yes, he some of his frustration come through, which is not normal coach-speak, but is 100% his style.

I have sat in his office and heard his pitch and it is VERY inspiring and I can see how he is getting kids (and their parents) to buy-in to coming to Charlotte. He is extremely focused on the future these men can have and the uniqueness that the Charlotte business community can offer compared to most other programs.

With that being said, his comments were not about fans but was about the community and the support we need, which is not unique to college sports. Heā€™s a bit of a curmudgeon but also a cocky SOB who has very little filter - all things I like - and I guarantee you he is saying this to the faces of major executives around the city to get their attention and ultimately their support.

ANd while the numbers are not great, itā€™s also not surprising. We do not instantly get AAC money (there is a ramp up I believe), which only exacerbates the budget issue. It does not mean we are broke but it does illustrate just how big of a jump we have taken as a program. I feel confident he will win games and surprise people this season and I just hope we can get the engagement needed from the community to support the team. Cheeks in the seat, dollars being donated and a whole shit-ton of green being worn across this city.

I think he handled interview completely wrong. I was turned off by it quite frankly.
If he had gotten his ā€œshotsā€ about the $$s in towards the end, I get it. To lead off with that and stay on it like he did, was not a good look.
I get the goal of it but did not like the execution of it.

Get us pumped up about the program then drop some fact bombs about money

Oh and I hate the NIL landscape. It will kill a lot of college programs who just canā€™t keep up with the $s needed to be successful

Hope Biff is as Green Jacket tonight.

Iā€™m waiting to see how the season plays out. TCU and Tulane both had great seasons last year and I donā€™t think it had much to do with NIL or their athletic budgets. We need more of an internal locus of control mentality if things are going to happen here.

I didnā€™t hear a single thing out of Biffā€™s mouth that 1) I didnā€™t agree with, and 2) that shouldnā€™t have been said out loud and sooner than this. I didnā€™t take it as him bashing the CLT area. I heard an aggressive challenge of put up or shut up. This school and its athletics has been forgotten about for a very long time and unless something changes, we will just be ā€œthatā€ school that has ā€œanā€ athletic program and a ā€œrichā€ academic program (just like many in this state has hoped for and plotted for). I donā€™t live in Charlotte, but it seems that no one or company in the region cares enough about this to really assist with financing a successful athletics program (at least football and basketball). Obviously our records and being in football for a short amount of time doesnā€™t help when we come running with our hands out and elephant ear pockets, but if the community doesnā€™t step up in a big way, Iā€™m afraid of what this program will be in a few years. Biff obviously will not stick around and who the hell could blame him.

Keep it up Biff. Hold corporations asses to the fire. Either this approach will be successful or we piss them off and turn them away with the aggression. Either way, if the later occurs, it will not differ from anything we have today (which is corporations not giving a damn and not donating).

What incentive did this give to corporations to give. Does a guilt trip really convince a corporation to donate. I just donā€™t understand what this accomplishes besides telling everyone we are broke & donā€™t have enough fan support to survive on our own. We need alumni at those corporations who support athletics to help us get support & apparently we donā€™t have many of those.
