Since everyone on here seems to be so picky about being called Charlotte, instead of UNC-Charlotte or UNCC, I figured I’d start a thread about it. I know we officially changed our athletics name to Charlotte. I would like us to become the University of Charlotte. It irks me when we aren’t referred to as Charlotte. But people on here need to grow some thicker skin.
I’ve seen plenty of you who correct people at their first opportunity when they don’t call us Charlotte, yet don’t correct Charlotte fans when we fail to refer to another school by the proper name. I guess bottom line is that we don’t have any business complaining about being called the wrong name when we don’t have the respect to do it for other programs.
Grow up, it’s a freaking name, it isn’t like UNCC of UNC-Charlotte are way off, I mean, those are official names of our school, just now how we’re being referred to athletically. If all you have to add to a topic is that someone misspoke on our name, then you’re probably better off just keeping out of the topic in the first place.
Qwan, some of us old-timers don’t mind the UNCC or UNC Charlotte. If we become the University of Charlotte, then that’s fine too!
What I don’t like, though, is UNC-Charlotte. The university had the hyphen legally removed back in the 1970s, so it’s just plain wrong to refer to us that way. When that damned hyphen “disappeared”, some campus group put out a great bumper sticker that read:
OK, fine, UNC Charlotte. But you see my point. I don’t think there’s much point in getting bent out of shape about it. I mean, you don’t see UCLA people getting pissed off that they haven’t changed their name to the University of Los Angeles. Not the same thing, I know, I know. My degree is from UNC Charlotte, not Charlotte, and while I prefer Charlotte, if someone refers to the basketball team with the same name as is on my degree, you won’t hear me complaining.
Qwan, you are showing just how new to the board you are.
To sum up as best I can, the real psychological problem with the UNC in the name is that it causes 2 major problems:
confusion with UNC-Chapel Hill
if there is no confusion with UNC-Chapel Hill, then the UNC in the front tends to leave the perception in the minds of those who don’t know better that we are some weak-ass satellite college of UNC-Chapel Hill. It is this perception we are trying to ditch.

I HAVE A HAT AT HOME THAT SAYS UNC NEWELL, MAYBE WE CAN USE THAT!
You didn't happen to wear it to Augusta for The Masters in 1986 did you? If so, I saw you.
My diploma is from UNC Charlotte & that’s what I’ve identified the school as, but this whole Charlotte/UNC Charlotte debate is so old and tiresome, I wish someone would put the 2 in sync so the issue could just go away.
I understand the arguments. Being new to the board has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with my disagreement in the notion that we must go out of our way to correct everyone when they misspeak. I’ve lived in Charlotte for 10 years, I’ve heard about all of this for 10 years. I’m a Charlotte alumnus, I understand not wanting to be confused with Chapel Hill, or being thought of as a satellite of Chapel Hill.
My point is simply that constantly correcting everyone seems like a teenager begging to be referred to as Rob when people have been calling him Robby for years. It seems childish. There’s nothing wrong with him being called Rob, it’s his right, and certainly shows a readiness for a bigger identity. But constantly telling people that they are wrong is a childish way to go about it.
As is the excuse, “you’re new to this board”.
My reference to your “newness” has nothing to do with your argument, just a reference to the fact that we’ve discussed this topic before so much that everyone who has been here a while has just about heard every angle on the subject, however your opinion on the “correcting” might be new.

Right, because there are so many other ways of letting people know our preference. What do you propose? The Vulcan mind-meld?
If we don’t correct people it shows the infamous Charlotte student/alumnus apathy.
Fair enough, I just get tired of hearing people use newness as an excuse to not consider an opinion. Thanks for explaining. Actually, I could tell you weren’t using it in the way that bugs me so much, just wanted to take the opportunity to yell about that pet peeve of mine. I figured it’s been talked about on here more than, well, a thousand times, it just amazes me that it’s still such a touchy subject.
I agree, the University has a sorry reputation of producing apathetic alums, and bringing in apathetic students.
It isn’t so much that I think we shouldn’t correct people. Like I said, it irks me too. Too much of it seems like whining though. Writing letters to the media, that’s a great way of going about it. Whining to every person who comes on this board is not. Most of them come on here to get things riled up, and when our only response is, “uh, actaully, we’re just Charlotte”, it just gives them more reason to call us “UNCC Charlotte-Charlotte-NC/Charlotte” or whatever the morons want to come up with next.
Brand name recognition is the holy grail of advertising. It is what fortune 500s spend BILLIONS yearly to aquire.Us correcting people for using our name incorrectily is good buisness and very smart.Qwan I know what your major wasn’t.
On the topic of correcting, I think there are sometimes when people should be corrected and other times to not correct . If someone in the national sports media says UNC-Charlotte 49ers or anything like that, I feel its ok to complain about it. Afterall, at the moment, we are UNCC so it is not actually wrong to say that and people should not be correct fore saying it.
Something that irritates me is people from up north (who go here or have kids here) refer to us as UNC with one “C”. I have a friend who got a greeting card from her friend up in New York and it said, “I hope you’re having fun at UNC.”
Obviously this is a very irritating, and if we were U. of Charlotte, this confusion would not happen. How is someone in another part of the country supposed to know UNC-Charlotte isn’t carolina blue. Even if they are supposed to know, they don’t in reality. The name should be changed but thats another ten threads a few months ago.
Once again, there are right ways to go about correcting people and wrong ways to go about it. Whining about it would be the wrong way. Writing letters, respectfully calling radio stations, emailing media, etc. would be right ways. Complaining to other teams fans while the talk sh!t about us would be the wrong way. And you’re right, my major wasn’t anything found in the Belk College. I do know enough about business however, to know that correcting other teams’ fans while they instgate arguments isn’t business at all, and is counterproductive, and not smart at all. Choose your battles. If a newspaper runs a story about us, and they’re mistake is referring to us as UNCC, then correct them on that. But if a fan comes on here saying we have a weak team, we got lucky with officials, we have soft players, etc., I think the last response we should have is “but our name is Charlotte!” That isn’t business, that isn’t advertising, that isn’t marketing, that’s whining. I already explained that I was not referring to business ventures.

This is right on. UNC-Charlotte is a marketing disaster. What if Yum! subsidaries Taco Bell and Pizza Hut were called YUM-TB and YUM-PH respectively? Well, first of all, they wouldn't be called those names because they have more clever marketing folks than that, and they were, those restaurants would not sell their product and gain fans. And if you think UNC-Charlotte should be tied to UNC, then why shouldn't Taco Bell be tied to YUM brands? I do agree theres more of an argument that UNC is a name you might want to be tied too unlike Yum!, but still I just think UNCC is bad brand-name marketing.
Hooligan, honestly, good call, I deserve to be shot. I hit that add shout button and thought, man, I’m an assclown, and I’m gonna hear about it too. My apologies, it won’t happen again.
And for the last time, marketing, lets complain all we can to get people to call us Charlotte. But as far as sports conversations are concerned, with actual team substance, my God people, think of something else to say.

I think that it is cool if people correct other schools fans who come here and talk about our team and say UNCC even thought their intent may not be disrespect. It is one thing to purposely say our name wrong to aggravate us( Just like people say Memphis State or UNC-Raleigh on here to aggravate others) but it is another to be ignorrant, and its ok to correct people if people want to correct them.
Its a free country. People can do whatever they feel like doing. gosh.
