Class ranked #23 by Hoopscoop

all I am saying is have some cautious optimism folks. When Coley signed last week, you'd thought we signed Dennis Rodman.

survivor, EJ was decent. I am only speaking about hype. Coley has recieved too much hype from this board (especially from one poster). I get sick of it- especially with incoming guys.

if hes another EJ, I guess thats OK. Hopefully he is more Kelin Price/Cam Stephens.

Ahhhh…I think we’re on the exact same page. I just misinterpreted ya.

I try to keep track of recruiting and at this point in the game, there are slim pickings left. How many Dennis Rodmans (or EJ Draytons) have not been picked up by college coaches in April/May? Look at any list of the best recruits in the nation and they’re either long gone or they’re now being courted by BCS teams that recently lost players to the NBA draft and now need to fill those schollies.

That’s why I get excited when we sign a Coley or a Mack (potential starters!) with our remaining schollies so late. I’m not calling anyone the next _____ (fill in a superstar) - I’m sort of saying “Holy crap! We’ve got a big-time recruit that can rebound!” I’m still being pretty cautious, though, too. ‘November dreams do not equal March realities’.

I thought you were saying, “Coley? Bah - we can do better” and I was saying “Uhm…no we can’t!” I try to call it like I see it and if I get pissed off at recruiting, I’ll say it. I’m not pissed at all - as the resident armchair GM, the recruiting appears to have been appoached very wisely this year. Good balance of the 15 players spread across the 5 positions ('specially if we get Carter), good balance of seniors, juniors, sophomores & freshmen, and we seemed to chase after the best available well-rounded players. I like this year’s recruiting compared to picking up too many 2-year players, too many 2s and 3s, and/or too many overhyped catch-and-shooters.

At this point, recruiting looks damn solid. How that translates to the basketball court, we won’t know for another year (or two).
Hopefully he is more Kelvin Price/Cam Stephens.
That would be a very good thing. BTW, one advantage Price and Stephens had over true JUCOs is they already had D-1 experience prior to donning 49er green. Price was NOT a JUCO and transferred from Southwestern Louisiana (now UL Lafayette) and Stephens played his freshman year at Purdue before transferring to Vincennes. So between those two, there was only 1 year of JUCO ball and that was Stephens’ sophomore year.

How can this be? All the best players are gone, yet we have the 13th ranked class? That’s why I say I would be careful overhyping the 13th ranked class.

Just remember…Hoop Scoop’s rankings are pretty bogus so take it with a grain of salt. Lamar was #12 last year if that tells you anything. They signed 8 kids and had more total points than teams with 4 or 5 guys that were better. Other teams from last year? Idaho #29, Stony Brook #31, East Carolina #35.
wtf?
how long have you been reading this board? a freakin year? I am talking about over-hype of all incoming players for the last decade.
reason I mentioned Carlos is because he was a JUCO and Coley is a JUCO, both ranked in the top 10 by JUCOJunction, no need to raise your blood pressure.

hell, the best 3 players the last decade had lead in their shoes (jobey, DJ, plav). Basketbal players excite me not track stars (Butter, Mitchel, etc). I am just glad we seem to have a real point gaurd for the first time in seems like forever.
Like another poster said, throw in Eddie, hell even Curt. I would take Colson in that top 3 as well.

What are you talking about? Lamar and Stony Brook were forces to be reckoned with last year. I’d put the Stony’s a little higher than Idaho though. Those guys can ball.

Just because you have a good incoming class doesn’t mean that you are a force that year. This is a meter for potential. Most on here do not have huge expectations this year. But if we can gel and keep everyone in Charlotte and healthy, we have a lot of potential. The publicity doesn’t hurt either.

Exactly, this year we had alot of potential. Looking at numbers alone we should have killed. Unfortunately this isn’t fantasy college basketball.

I definately think we have a good nucleus of guys we can build a solid foundation with. Although this year my friends, is what me and the rest of the guys/girls in the real world of sports along with Bryant Gumble, call a rebuilding year.

According to this, UAB did even better than us per CollegeHoopsUpdate.com.

BTW, CHU ranked Duquesne at #23, which was the only A-10 school in their top 25, though we and Dayton did make their “Others” group.

Michigan got on this list with 2 players!
Michigan got on this list with 2 players!
Nebraska has TEN (10)!! And we thought we had major roster turnover.

Phil Jones isn’t on the list for us. I wonder if his inclusion would push us into their top 25?

If you count Dewhurst, we have at least 9 new faces. If we hand out one more scholarship, that will be 10.

Dewhurst
Barnett
Ngoundjo
Wilderness
Mack
Harris
Coley

plus Leemire, Ian, Lewis and Phaler.

I’m hoping we can add Sean Carter to that list, but I definitely don’t object with saving the schollie for next year.

I must have missed this post. CHU ranks teams about 1,000,000 times better than Hoopscoop’s bogus ranking system. Since they included transfers like Mike Gerrity, I can fully understand Duquesne’s ranking (they must feel good about being ranked ahead of nearby Pitt). I’m slightly surprised at no mention of Xavier (with their Manhattan transfer) but I think CHU got it right. With 3 teams (Duquesne, Dayton, Charlotte), perhaps the A-10 has finally decided to stop sucking.
