None of the new stuff that has been built is iconic in any way.
Putting a statue in it’s place does not replace it IMO. We have statues all over campus.
Well, the notice they sent out stating the Tower was to be torn down referred to it as iconic, so that obviously doesn’t carry much weight with the powers that be.
You’re right, though.
We don’t have a statue that I know of which would be unique to our campus. Bonnie Cone would fit that bill.
The “49er” statue is pretty unique to us, but it needs to be in a better location for sure.
Statue being moved in front of Student Union. senior class project.
Good. Better location.
Or relocating it to the roundabout at the front entrance.

I can’t find the reference, but Phil wants to get rid of roundabouts on campus, too; ironically, quoting pedestrian safety concerns.

LOL! Didn’t he preside over the construction of at least two of those? :))

Probably needed to pay for his healthcare premium increase. I just got notice mine is going up almost 40% in January, which is approaching 300% in increases since 2005. That is sad when it costs more for healthcare insurance than it does to actually live.
Back to the Belk Tower, I think they need to replace it with a taller lighthouse. Our campus in at a higher elevation than most of the surrounding areas. It would be cool to have a green beacon lighting up the sky on game nights.

I’m not sure what is more disappointing: The Belk Tower getting torn down or the alumni apathy towards the situation.
Dead serious question- why should I be up in arms over something that most of us thought looked like a joke to begin with?

Do most of us have that opinion? 90% of the people that I have talked to about this over the last few weeks do not want it to be torn down. We have all made the jokes about it, but most of us realize that it is a historic symbol for our University. Even our weasel of a chancellor called it ‘an iconic symbol of a young and growing University’ in his e-mail.

Who says “most of us” thought it was a “joke”?..I sure didn’t…How juvenile is it to call something like that a “joke” just because of its shape? Geez, what are we 3rd graders?
I would just like to go on record now and say that when they are ready to renovate, or tear down Kennedy, it will not bother me a bit that I took Cobol there once upon a time. And the pre-cast concrete entrance, that apparently is the inspiration for our Seal, is not sacrosanct. It is just a goofy attempt to dress up the mid-60s, low-bid architecture. Let the student’s talk about chaining themselves to the porch begin now, so they can head off to Starbucks instead. :-*

I am a more recent graduate and everyone I know doesn’t care about it. I am with Hootie.

Curious which has more historical significance, the phallic tower or the name UNCC (or UNC Charlotte)?
I want the name change as much as anybody but would argue the history associated with the name(s) are far greater than the tower. Odd (but not surprised) that the alums most vocal about a name chance are also the most vocal “keep the tower” crowd.
And I haven’t done a poll like Kevin, but the people I talk to are mostly apathetic about tearing down the tower. I don’t have an opinion on the tower. If the Belk family is ok with a change, why would I feel differently? And why would my opinion matter even if I did feel strongly? It was their money. I hung out at the base of it like everyone else, but only because it was a central point on the old campus, not because of the tower. I’m hopeful that that the space will be better used after the tower comes down.
We want to change our name because we want to stand out from the “UNC” brand and be unique in the marketplace, no longer confused as a satellite campus of Chapel Hill.
We want to keep the Belk Tower because it is one of the few unique things about our campus. It’s likely to be torn down and replaced with something that is bland and not at all iconic.
