clt asks what should replace the belk tower?

Why?
For me personally, the tower holds no sentimental value, and really til now, it seemed to not for most. It was mostly a joke to students, alums, and outsiders alike. So I’m surprised at all the "love" it’s getting now. If it goes, I won’t miss it. That’s me. If people want to fight to keep it, fine. If it’s replaced, I hope whatever goes in there is accepted by most everyone, but I know it probably won’t because, these days we just like to b**** regardless of the reason or cause.
I have a framed picture of it in my office. People aren’t bitching just to bitch.

It is pretty simple really. Our University has very little history. One of the only landmarks on our campus through the years is the Belk Tower. I also have a picture of the Belk Tower hanging on a wall with my degree.

Compounding the umbrage is the process in which Phil has chosen to get this done. He doesn’t like it and wants to rush to get it demolished before anyone can do anything about it.

Speak for yourself.

I don’t have any sentimental attachment to it, but it is the one iconic structure on our campus. None of the new stuff that has been built is iconic in any way.

Putting a statue in it’s place does not replace it IMO. We have statues all over campus.

You’re right, though.

We don’t have a statue that I know of which would be unique to our campus. Bonnie Cone would fit that bill.

Not liking how it looks and making fun of it doesnt mean that it cant also hold a special status among alums.

Watch them make a brick plaza with a few benches and call it a day.

Yep. My first memory of UNC Charlotte, was riding into town to make my first visit to campus and the Belk Tower was the first thing I saw in the distance going down Mallard Creek Church Road. Many other great memories, but that always stands out.

I’m pretty certain that is exactly what he was doing. The “That’s me” was the real clue.

No, apparently you didn’t read the parts I bolded…he was inferring that he knows what others think about it. The “thats me” part was clearly referring to him “not missing it”.

The “49er” statue is pretty unique to us, but it needs to be in a better location for sure.

Maybe we can get Matt stafford to pose for a new statue

That is an excellent observation. The Belk Quad would be a great place to put it. Accessable, approachable, students could bring their selfie sticks and shoot one with Norm. I may sound like I am kidding, but I actually like this idea a lot. The current location just doesn’t work.

Yes, They can all take their selfies and get the newly repaired Belk tower in the background as well!! Great idea!

clt says it is all about the selfies.

I don’t disagree. I like that statue but I probably saw it maybe twice while in school. I just never went over two where it is.

I agree. I have always thought the 49er should be in a more accessible location. It is probably the one statue on campus that most visitors would like to take a picture with (like the Pirate on ECU’s campus for example) so it makes sense to not have it on an “island” that is difficult to get to (ie; not on a busy footpath, or even somewhere with adjacent parking).

Good. Better location.
