I like McAppyFan, but come on, everyone knows that App couldn’t put together a crowd of brown faces in the stands even if you promised everyone a free Zaxby’s chicken sandwich.
Joking aside I do wish App was a bit more diverse. My roommate my freshman year would have classified himself as a minority I assume and from Charlotte. He did not care for the weather.
Back to joking, there are a few shades of “pasty.” Maybe not 30 but a few. I am just impressed a few clicked on my Wikipedia page as if it were real.
Speaking of chicken after I picked up a daughter at the local airstrip in Charlotte I took them to the original Bojangles. Before becoming McLeansvilleAppFan I lived as GreensboroAppFan and lived about 2 miles from the original Cookout. My claim to fame is eating at the original Bojangles and Cookout.
I want to say 10% but I could be wrong. A bit of a guess on my part. It is something that is being worked on which I am.glad to see.
Many students don’t travel that far from home for college so with App being a few hours from the Black Belt that runs through the central and eastern part of the state it is not the easiest thing but the school is making efforts.
Western has some what of a higher percentage, I think, due to Native American enrollment. Asheville I am not sure about but I don’t think any of the three mountain schools have a high percentage of minority students compared to state averages but are closer to local populations.
If there is one thing I could do with the snap of the fingers, as it concerns App specifically , would be to increase the minority presence.
Per the official UNC System data, in 2017 App had 707 Black/African-American students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate programs. So of the 18,811 total students, 3.75% are Black/African-American. I would have to guess that at least a couple hundred of the 707 are athletes, but that is only a guess. For comparison Charlotte’s number is about 15.6%.
I was going to say 3% at first but thought I read about a year ago of it being around 10%. Maybe that was a goal I was reading about or maybe I was just not remembering correctly.
Thanks for looking the numbers up.
Do you have ease to determine numbers for the entire UNC system?
Generally (key word here, folks) speaking, the things that attract many students to App are things that, historically, have not had major participation from minority groups. Skiing and snowboarding, mountain biking, backpacking, fishing, hiking, etc… Kids who grow up interested in those activities will look at the prospect of coming to Boone and see it as an outdoor playground. If someone grew up enjoying more “normal” activities and hobbies then I could see why Boone and its lack of urban amenities would be a turn off.
There is no indignity in any type of work. I was raised to respect all that try their best to earn an honest living, and if one of the employee benefits is a free meal then all the better. Given the fact that the Fight for Fifteen has not moved wages enough yet does mean that many in the food services industry must work multiple jobs. That is not something to make fun of but instead should be a rallying cry for social justice and a fair wage for all. I am proud to stand with my brothers and sisters hand in hand and shoulder to shoulder in working for that glorious day when all work is done at a living wage.
Also, you really need to spend a few minutes and come up with a joke that is not so simple. I don’t think I have been rude on this board to any Niner fans, but if I was going to attempt to crack a joke to a Niner fan on this board I would give them the respect and spend more than 15 seconds on such an obvious joke. It does take a bit of time to come up with something humorous and intelligent at the same time. It is not easy work but it can be done by most anyone but the most simple dullard. Then again maybe I just explained why you made the comment you just made.
See McAppFan…you try to play nice and you get the same insults from a couple 49ers. Gonna be another loooong season for the whiNers. ( They musta gone to the Georgia Southern site for material…nothing original in the comments)
For the system it looks like we are at 20.2%. Our five public HBCU campuses (the most of any state I believe) helps push the system-wide numbers up, but they are generally no more racially diverse than App is. UNC-P leads the way in student diversity, with Charlotte and ECU doing a good job of providing a student body that looks like America (racially).
