Iām just using the bowl game as an illustration we made it to FBS level insanely faster than they did.
It is worth noting that both the Sun Belt and C-USA could have taken App instead of us, but they didnāt. And this was just a few years after Appās three back-to-back FCS championships (2005-07). App only got into the Sun Belt after FAU, FIU, North Texas and MTSU all moved up to C-USA, and the Belt was down to 7 teams. I am with NWA on this, App has a terrific football program, but in spite of their success conferences looked at all their other sports (weak), budget (poor), academics (meager), location (nowhere near an airport), growth potential (no available room) and decided to take a pass.
The good news if you are a Mountaineer is this is all okay. Football is all that matters, and football has been good. The bad news is they are on their third coach in three years because the programālike all G5 programsāis a stepping stone. The big question is can they continue to hire very good coaches on an FCS budget? If so, they will be the first school to ever do it, so I bet no.

We are scary to App and other NC schools now that we have Hill, Healy and the basketball program is finally showing signs of rebirth. Our ceiling is nearly limitless, and Appās best days will likely soon be in the past, unless Boone gets a viable regional airport. My opinions

My understanding from several App students I know is that the push for over 20K enrollment is at the heart of this. For some reason (believed to be financial) they want to push App past 20K enrollment which goes against the smaller school character that many of the App family prize. They donāt want to be a big school like UNC Charlotte, NC State or UNC Chapel Hill.
This sucks. Everyone pray for quick recovery for the Appys.

Funny thing is App St alumni/students want their identity to be both a small college tucked away in a small town in the mountains and be a Power 5 college football power.
Gotta pick one and embrace itā¦canāt be both. Trying to be both will get them neither.
