Coach Lutz & The Future

I know this is kind of beating a dead horse, but I am curious to read other members take on a specific issue with Lutz & the Future.

Am I the only one that is scared to death at the idea of our current administration being in charge of finding a new men’s basketball head coach?

I sometimes think we need a change just due to the situation being relatively stagnant, but I worry about the capabilities of those in charge to find a better replacement, which makes me believe we are better off with Lutz.

Thoughts???

I’m sure CH Phil will let the officials in chapel hill decide who our next coach should be if Bobby leaves. We may also eventually see “UNCC” on the jerseys again. Scary thoughts I know and maybe a little drastic on my part. But the way things are going you never know.

I think it would be correct to say that we have a fine group of coaches throughout our athletic program. It seems to me that the AD and whoever else is involved in bringing coaches here has done a great job, including our most recent basketball coaches. I have confidence that the best interest of our teams will be served, including whether we need a coaching change or not.

I am not specifically saying anyone needs to be removed but I have more confidence in the basketball coaches then I do with the athletic department leaders.

The AD didn't lose to Monmouth, Hofstra, and Fordham.

I always feel like this is a poor justification to keep Bobby, “Well he’s the best we can get right now, our admin can’t find good coaches, etc.” It doesn’t make these late season collapses any easier to take or to stomach.

I think Bobby did what was asked of him and earned the extension (4-6 years). I don’t necessarily think it was the best decision to extend him but I think he did enough to earn the extension and I hope the classes we have coming in are as great as so many on here claim. I hope that we actually have balanced scoring next season and the year after. I am frustrated with where we are as program. I think we can survive without Bobby (I want him to succeed but the past 3 seasons have drove me crazy) and might actually find a better coach, but from what I have been told Phil doesn’t want to spend money on the program. Thus I would hate to see us get worse with another coach. I think whats interesting is most fans, alumni, and students like Bobby. We just disagree on if he’s best for the program.

No they didnt…but they put us in this crappy conference…which cuts down on what type of basketball players we can attract…I cant stand the new chancelor and I hope we get rid of him soon…if not, all sports will suffer…

I can’t express how badly I hate our Chancellor. If anyone needs to go, it’s Dubois.

As for coaching.
I think Bobby has incrtedible energy and is an excellent guy. He brings excitement and enthusiasm to the court, and he’s great to the students and fans, but I don’t know if that cuts it. He relies far too much on the three ball and is clueless on how to attack a zone defense or feed the post. I am slowly losing faith in his potential as a coach. We should have gotten better throughout the season, not worse. It’s hard to say whether I think we need a change or not, but if I had to chose, I would say next season should bring change to the coaching position.

What is the over/under on how many coaches we have over the next 10 years if Lutz leaves or is fired? I say at least 3 in 10 years. We either hire a coach that struggles and leaves/gets fired or someone that takes what we have and pushes the program into the sweet 16 or a similar level of success for a few years and leaves for a BCS job.

what were the 3 things we had to improve this year? defense (check), chemistry (check), and attitude (check). It takes 2 years to turn it fully around. Next year all these kids will have another card to play offensively - I bet Anjuan will have a right hand, Dewy will have a short jumper, Gerrity will have a jumper, Phil will have a clue, Coley will do something besides dunk, etc. Remember- NONE of these kids have played D1 minutes until this year except Lee and Gerrity. We have equaled our win total from last year with greenhorns.

at this point of the season, we are no riddle. Every opposition takes away our offense. Next year we won’t be so easy to defend. Having veterans as opposed to rooks makes a huge difference.

If it is true that Dubois does not want to spend money on the program then he is a very one dimensional chancellor. The job of the Chancellor is to oversee and improve all facets of the university academics, athletics, facilities. Most universities save for the Ivy league, which has trust funds for their trust funds, realize that to get attention, students and community involvement you need to make a university attractive on all levels, after all we are competing for students, and money. I do not see how having a strong athletic program would be a negative. Athletics breed pride, school spirit and in a lot of cases, alumni giving.

I personally have great confidence in Bobby Lutz. I think great things are yet to come. We are lucky to have someone with his passion and his ability coaching for us. As a fan I get frustrated with close losses, but I guarantee you no one hates a loss more than Bobby Lutz. He is building a great foundation for a fantastic season next year. There is still a lot of season left this year …and this years team has exceeded my personal expectations. I think they could fizzle or go deep into the post season arena. Coach Lutz will do his part to make good things happen.

Yes, but all of the other sports in the A10 are Divison II compared to what we can offer, we should dominate those sports in conference.

Basketball is different and with DuBois not seeming to be a Lutz fan, I worry of what kind of coach he can bring in, especially since Lutz has had a good track record here and has been treated like trash lately.

I think Lutz is a good coach, but I think he relies too much on gimmicks and the 3 ball, instead of having faith in his system and players to beat BCS level teams when the opportunities present themselves.

Ditto! AbsoLUTZly!

This sums up my view as well.

I still hate the fact that we can’t close out games and we still take dumb shots from time to time. Having said that our improvements far outweigh our weaknesses at this point.

This team has improved in the ways I wanted to see it for this year. Next year I expect top 3 in A-10 and an NCAA birth.

Yep, those NCAA “births” can be something else…

I don’t understand why people think we’ll be better next year. We’ll be without a stud 3 point shooter in a 3-ball heavy offense. Not to mention our players have gotten worse as the year has gone on: we still can’t inbound the ball under the basket, our defense has gotten worse, and we’re back to relying on the 3 ball almost entirely.

There are plenty of ‘young’ teams doing better than we are, and they don’t have a senior guard that can put up 40 points in a game regardless of defensive pressure.

I wish we had the same motto as our womens team… ‘no excuses, only results.’ Seems like there is always an excuse for why our team doesn’t do as well as it should.

Edit: To elaborate, our excuse next year will be “well, we’re learning to play without Lee.” We’ll end up having a bad year, and be like… well, we’ll get them next year! But, we’ll be without Coley and Mack then.

maybe because you’re clueless how sports really work, and haven’t watched this cycle in your short and obnoxious lifetime

How old are you? Anyway.

The team will most likely struggle next year without Leemire. Feel free to tell me why you think we’ll be better without the senior leader emotionally and performance-wise. I certainly don’t see anyone capable, at the moment.

I really don’t know what to think on the future of 49ers basketball.

Support and criticism can be spun so many different ways, its all becoming a big blur.

YES - Coach Lutz has achieved some things (most already mentioned here) that 12 months ago didn’t look possible.
YES - I know it is not necessarily fair to measure success at Charlotte by the same criteria as other area schools.
YES - I know that the Athletic Department is underfunded when compared to many of its peers.

I do believe Coach Lutz is bothered by some of his players decisions on the court. In my opinion, he does not coach everything we see happen in the course of a game.

Does the future look bright? Hell, I don’t know. The whole concept of recruiting is such as crapshoot, who knows what to think of the future. I mean, seriously, there are people who walk the earth that believed that Martin Iti was a valuable recruit.

In spite of all of the pro Lutz/anti Lutz spin, I keep coming back to one thing.

1998-1999 NCAA appearance - 1 win
1999-2000 NIT
2000-2001 NCAA appearance - 1 win
2001-2002 NCAA appearance
2002-2003 no post season play
2003-2004 NCAA appearance
2004-2005 NCAA appearance
2005-2006 NIT - 1 win
2006-2007 no post season play
2007-2008 ???

Whether it is right or wrong, I have trouble getting excited over post sesaon appearances. Celebrating the fact of “just being there” sells this program short, in my opinion.

Where does this leave me?

I have no idea.
