Judy thought all sports should get the same prioritization. Mike talks about indoor track championships like they are basketball championships. Our leaders for decades Havenât put the same emphasis on football and basketball as many of our peers.
Itâs just hard to care as much for me. I kinda miss being wrapped up like used to be but itâs also kinda freeing in a way.
With the way things are now, I doubt Iâll ever be more than a casual fan. I donât have any idea what college sports are gonna look like in 4 or 5 years but Iâm not all that concerned. I pretty well checked out.
My biggest interest in sports is gambling sadly enough
What national said here is what makes me believe that paying players by any athletic department that is not self sufficient and dependent on athletic fees is not going to fly.
I think there are a lot of people in the country who share this opinion and are not going to tolerate student fees supporting players getting paid.
I simply refuse to believe that that will happen.
Letâs think about the logistics of this.
Letâs say that the AAC says that their schools have to payout 10 million to revenue sports players (I have no idea if thatâs reasonable but this is just for illustrative purposes).
At charlotte where does that money actually come from?
It canât come from donations because thatâs a non stable revenue stream unless we got a mega donation to setup an athletic endowment.
It canât come from raising ticket prices because people are not going to pay those prices. We are already at pricing levels the market will bear.
It canât come from TV revenue cause thatâs set in stone for years.
It canât come from redirecting student fees or other revenue because we are already running a tight ship.
It could come from cutting other sports down to basketball football and a bare minimum to meet title 9 compliance. But currently that is against NCAA and conference regulations correct?
It could come from raising student fees but that would have to be approved by some authority. BOG of charlotte or BOG of the system. That is not going to happen. Just mark it down now that approval will not happen. Period. Not in todayâs climate.
Ok so that covers where the money would come from.
The other issue is simply paying players ANYTHING above the package of benefits they get now. Which is already a fantastic deal for those on any scholarship.
In our situation thatâs not going to fly politically much less pencil out financially because there will be a rebellion on that.
This situation is going to settle out with two groups of programs.
Those that can pay players without dipping into university funds and student fees and those that canât.
Those that canât are going to have to say bye bye to top level athletics and just go with it.
The writing is on the wall here and no oneâs reading it.
This will result in one of two things happening.
-
The status quo where the G5 has scholarships and NIL and we still compete with P4 as we do today.
-
There is a split.
The commissioner of the AAC is dreaming if he thinks the majority of the AAC can afford to pay players. Heâs blowing smoke.
If Memphis can use their FedEx big brother funds to pay players then more power to them. Maybe that will get them into the P4 and then they can pay their own way because they FedEx money will dry up one day.
The fact is for the vast majority of the G5 the money is not there, itâs never been there and it never will be.
And finally, letâs get ready for the great college athlete backlash of the mid 2020s which is coming.
The fact is that most players in every school in the country are not creating enough value for their athletic programs to even warrant what they are already getting.
This woe is me attitude for college athletes has been ridiculous for a while now.
Think about the package of benefits they already get. Itâs amazing. And they get that for playing the sport they love.
Most of them would do it for nothing.
The backlash is coming.
And the public will not tolerate any shenanigans with student fees or university funds. If that crap starts happening be prepared for that to be election issues in the future.
clt thinks NIL is going to dry up bigly. take Fedex for example, where is the ROI? as a shareholder, clt would be pissed on wasting funds.
Yeah i donât understand this part of it. There is no ROI and honestly as a fan of another AAC school I will go out of my way to not use FedEx now. I donât understand why shareholders wouldnât put a stop to this. Itâs a different story if they pick a future lottery pick basketball star or NFL level QB and give them an NIL deal. But just donating a lump sum of money every year for all Memphis athletes should have absolutely zero ROI. It might increase business with Memphis fans, but should decrease business with fans of any school that has to compete with them.
Itâs going to become a vanity project for the ultra rich.
I mean it already was (Oregon, Ok State, etc), but now it really will be. Get a sugar daddy or get relegated.
College athletics will become like horse racing âthe sport of kingsâ.
Did you see the Olympics today when the Track and Field female athlete tweeted that Vandy only paid 75% of her rent and she was broke and could not pay the rest yet the FB players were getting enough money for cars and houses. It is a bad look for everyone with the University and you can not tell me there will not be a male female NIL pay fight coming. IMO there are just not enough sustainable funds except for maybe 20 to 25 programs.
I honestly am curious to see how the U.S. performance in the olympic games will be in the future if college programs are forced to gut those programs in college just to make sure the players on the basketball and football teams get paid. I mean some overseas fans think that right now we are in s slump in swimming in these games and we will likely be back on top in the future so they better rack up wins now. but if those swimming programs get eliminated in college maybe this could the the start of the road to meritocracy in the future. And who knows what happens with even more niche programs like fencing and shooting.
I donât know how NIL will survive Title IX challenges.
Also Flavor Flav and a Reddit guy paid her rent.
The Reddit guy is Serena Williamsâs husband.
If NIL is paid by private sector donations would Title IX apply?
Sincere question.
No, it does not.
If it goes through the school it will.
I donât care what has been said so far. There will be a challenge.
Baylor coaches wearing âwe pay playersâ shirts are just begging for Title IX challenges.
I would question why she thought that was a problem.
The football team brings in the revenue through their sec tv contracts.
Track and field is a money loser I would imagine.
She is only there because of title 9.
This woe is me attitude is ridiculous and I would say welcome to a slice of the real world.
Vandy has an endowment of $10 billion+. Theyâre just being cheap asses in this instance with Raleigh native Fraley.
And, of course, VU seemingly proud of their Olympians, which is at least much more authentic than the ACC âclaimingâ Ledecky!
I would say someone striving for an Olympic Gold medal for their country and doing so at a financial cost / loss like most of the lower tier athletes do is not a good representation of the " woe is me" , âslice of the real worldâ examples I would use.
Doing this while the University you go to with a mind numbing ridiculous endowment promotes you on one side and then nickel and dimes you on the other side is a bad look.
Not to derail or make this political but it is also extremely tone deaf to a lot of young people with what is going on in the country with a lot of their political issues with women and equality that is a hot button issue. No matter where you stand on those beliefs it is just a bad look for Vanderbilt on a National stage. Definitely an unforced error they will have to clean up.
