College athlete compensation - NIL etc šŸ’°

about time, finally some grown-ups looking at this mess. If the gov acts quickly and takes away that tax-exempt status from these collectives, the SEC, Big10 and Oregon NIL collectives will be cut in half over night. No way they will get the level of participation without being able to deduct it on their personal taxes as contributions. It hurts all 132 programs but IMO hurts the haveā€™s more than the have notā€™s.

Nineradvocate and run49er, who do you follow on x to see this stuff? #ConspiracyTheorist ? I love this stuff

That is a damn fine point. Excellently stated.

I follow Dan Wolken, Mit Winter, and Matt Brown, among others.

Ditto as well as sportswriters Ross Dellenger and Dennis Dodd + sports lawyers Tom Mars and Michael McCann. Former a past general counsel for Walmart while latter a legal expert for Sportico.

A good one with direct ties to the AAC is Gabe Feldman, director of the sports law program within the Tulane School of Law.

Might partially explain why Tulsa sucked so badly.

The clearing house idea is going to crash and burn so hard just like this settlement.

The only thing thatā€™s sets NIL value is the market. Period.

Billable hours will win here.

Wow. Iā€™m sure that made the LSU community happy.

I wonder why he couldnā€™t go to Florida State?

I wonder if someone in his life ordered or pressured him to go with the biggest bag instead of where he wanted to go.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster to me.

I think itā€™s indicative of what itā€™s like being a college athlete now. We always moan about players not staying. However, from their perspective, they are too enticed by large sums of money under narrow timing windows to go where they might really want to go.

Itā€™s a bit of a first world problem, but it emphasizes how money has completely taken over the game. It started as a precarious balance years and years ago, and got incrementally worse over time, but at this point, we have fully substituted :moneybag: for the game(s) we loved.

Itā€™s not a sport, not a game someone loves to play or watch anymore. Itā€™s a business. Cold and ruthless and uncaring about anything but the bottom line.

Yet another in a long line of atrocious letdowns in society that have money as the culprit. Pouring so much money into these sports is what ruined them.

This is probably the direction most P4 schools will go - cutting facilities and coaching salaries to fund NIL. And thatā€™s not even a bad thing conceptually.

The point is, NIL court decisions didnā€™t suddenly create this new pool of money. It had to come from somewhere.

Wolken called it earlier

Definitely turned out to be ominous!

clt says we should sell ā€œsharesā€ in Charlotte Athletics. The
ā€œsharesā€ value would be determined by a market roughly based on our performance. At year end, we would have the option to return profits to ā€œshareholdersā€ if desired.

we could also sign players to ā€œcontractsā€ to play at Charlotte.
