Complain to the A10 Commissioner

A-10 commissioner responds -- sort of

Here’s the response I got from Atlantic 10 commissioner Bernadette McGlade today about concerns she heard from Charlotte 49ers athletics director Judy Rose about the disparity in fouls called in 49ers games last week against Richmond and St. Bonaventure:

“I have heard the concerns brought to light by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and have discussed them with our coordinator of men’s basketball officials," McGlade said in an email through a conference spokesman. "Officiating is a challenging profession. If a mistake was made we will address it appropriately.”

(letter I just sent to the commisioner) Commisioner McGlade,This is the first letter I have ever written to a commissioner of a conference. However, I consider the matter to be serious enough to warrant my response & your attentuion. The concerns of Charlotte 49er fans are not just about the officiating in our past two men’s basketball games but officiating in the A-10 Conference in general although the media is using The St. Bonaventure game to poke fun at A-10 officiating. The concern about the quality of A-10 officiating also is not just one by Charlotte 49er fans but all schools & fans in the A-10. This problem has been going on for several years without being addressed, but the last two games has brought facts about consistently bad officiating in the A-10 to the forefront, not only in Charlotte but fans across the nation due to media coverage. The A-10 conference has had for several years now a very serious problem with regards to officiating. As Commissioner, you must not pass over these facts lightly. They are not possibly the result of officiating being a difficult job or calls just missed due to human error. This is especially obvious given the disdain & lowly opinion that has been brought to bear on our conference officiating by other fans & the media with regards to the St. Bonaventure game in particular. Today with gambling on sports being one of the most lucrative businesses in America & given the fact a professional official has been convicted for betting on games recently, it is imperative that you as commissioner investigate this matter using all the facilities available to you. Please understand that I am in no way accusing anyone, but in light of the fact that an official has been convicted, it is imperative that all conference commissioners watch over officiating with a very close eye to prevent something similar happing in college athletics. You must take seriously the concerns of all A-10 fans. Please review films of controversial games over the past few years & you will see that we & especially you as commissioner of the A-10 conference has a very serious problem. One that is not caused by a few inexperienced men that have a difficult job and/or might miss a call here & there due to human error. Officials that are proven to have misused their responsibility and our trust in them must be, I repeat must be, censured and/or fired and replaced with quality officials with integrity for the game. This is a problem that is serious enough to destroy our conference if it is not addressed & remedied immediately. respectfully yours, my signature(Charlotte 49er fan & fan of basketball for 50 years)
