Conference Realignment (Part 1)

I wonder if we end up with a salaried pro “college” football league, and everyone else playing unsalaried football?

That seems like the likely dividing line.

Would def push to a 30 team or so league. There are many schools that won’t be interested in that model.

If you are lucky enough to be part of that group the television revenue alone is enough to pay the players and still have plenty left over. If they are pulling in $80 million per school per year, they can use $40 million of that to pay players and still have more money than an ACC, B12 or P12 school starts with. If you are just considering television revenue.

I can’t figure out the economics of it when you have programs like UCLA and Cal already hemorrhaging money, before paying players directly.

I am not sure if I want to, and I know they don’t want me to. If I am not following one of their brands, then I don’t matter as a consumer.

I have said it before but for this to work it means the masses pick a team to follow - like the NFL. I think the networks are really overestimating people tuning in. Sure the walmart fans who have will keep doing so, but a lot of G5 and current P5 fans will just tune out all together instead of paying casual attention as they/we do now. Maybe I am way off - but I just dont see it.

Some very good logical comments. Would like to see the American get aggressive and make it a 4th 20 team conference.

Only problem is the ACC and P12 will probably skim the top off of the G5 to fill spots instead of the other way around

We want to be at the top of the AAC anyway.

For that guy’s video, I was surprised how he completely ignored NC State.

It depends on how many teams they lose. If 8 teams vote to terminate GoRs in ACC and they lose their network that league is toast. If pac loses 4 more teams I don’t see them having enough clout to get enough teams over tk keep the league. Be mwc bringing in the leftovers.

The hardest logical leap is that of the former B.E. teams voting to disband the ACC… So they can move to the Big 12?

I’m not seeing that one. They’d go there if they had no choice, but by refusing to disband they could hold Clemson, CHeat, FSU, etc hostage. Much more likely to go that route and stay in an East Coast based league.

I don’t see them voting to disband but if it’s 8 votes and 4 go to sec and 4 to b12 then they have what they need. Question is what value does ACC have if they lose top 4 brands? Once that happens t what does the rest of the league do? Try to reform? Man it’s all madness.

In that scenario, he is relying on those schools to be the second group of 4 to vote to disband. That’s why I don’t see it as likely.

With the GOR in place, it’s all or nothing. Either everyone goes or no one does. So you’d have to offer a better option to 8 schools to make it happen. I couldn’t see that unless the B1G got involved, and their eyes are set westward as of now. And even if they did, I don’t think they’d want more than say 2 ACC schools anyway (really only 1, but they’d take a pair probably).

If 2 went to B1G and 4 went SEC… Maybe, just maybe, VA Tech and Louisville would vote with them to go to the Big 12. That’s about the only scenario I see working while the GoR remains. They’d slide in neatly with Cincy, WVU, UCF, and probably Houston in an eastern Big12 division.

We need this delay anyway to build out our stadium and our program. I want to be in a position to be looked on as favorable partner with any of the local ACC leftovers, where or however that took form. We need successful revenue programs and a 30k football stadium with solid attendance.

I just don’t see 8 from the ACC being valuable enough to go to the SEC or B10 and if you aren’t guaranteed a spot in one of those conferences why would you vote to disband what would be the 3rd most powerful conference after the P12 dissolves. Anyone besides FSU, Miami, Clemson and possibly UNC would end up with a worse deal than they already have.

Any details on what commitments $$ were made to join AAC?

Coaching salaries etc… how will this begin to manifest itself.

I don’t know the details but I know the AD’s goal is to be around a 60 mil budget in around 5 years. I assume they made that commitment to the league.

Gonna have to pump up our student fee numbers.

Yeah fee number isn’t going up. They aren’t going to get that approved at the legislature even if that was the direction they wanted to go. Obviously part of the increase to 60 will come from aac money payout. I’m not sure where that final number is but I’m guessing 5-7 mil which means in the next five years they have to find 13-15 mil for operating budget. Some of that will likely be img renegotiating with sponsor based on better tv deals and games. Also means anyone that wants us to keep striving to take a step up has to chip in.
