Conference Realignment (Part 1)

That’s a tough sale given the direction college football is going. I don’t envy the fundraising department. “We need more money to compete in a system that is increasingly exclusionary”

Yup. And any chance of staying even close to relevancy means finding a way to raise the money.

I think they’re over valuing the BIG12 and undervaluing the ACC. Even if a Clemson leaves, wvu, Cincy, ucf would rather be in the ACC.

My question is if the southern football schools leave why would the NE Big East schools stick around? Could they call the BE back up and form the hybrid league they were?

I just dont think that nc state has the national value that the bigger conferences want. they would be a decent consolidation program to fill the numbers if they cant get one of the bigger brands they want but they aren’t needed for much else.

I would say that while charlotte isn’t as well known as them or popular in the state right now we could even be as useful as a plug in program for the big 12 as nc state.

I’d like to be in a league with State, Wake and ECU. Would keep things interesting.

clt is glad Mike Hill is well connected and we have $

I wouldn’t mind being in a conference with state and wake. although my head tells me the likely best case scenario is charlotte ends up in an eastern big 12 wing with memphis. with Louisville and georgia tech added later. maybe pitt if georgia tech gets picked up by the P2.

“We are worried about antitrust if we cripple the conference, so we’re applying pressure to other peer organizations to work in concert with us to cripple the conference.” That’s super logical.

I don’t see how it could be anti trust. It’s a competitive market for programs to make your conference better.

We have years of precedent of conferences raising others. There are plenty of schools the Pac can back fill with. The quality of those programs are immaterial.

As a fan of the Niners who have their own unique history of climbing up the sports conference tiers AND getting screwed in a realignment I have only a small amount of sympathy for those that get impacted. Sympathy yes, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

I didn’t stop going to games when we got regulated down to the A10.

If the Big 12 is going to miss its draft picks due to the clock running out, Aresco could jump in and help. Let’s pickup Utah and Colorado in the AAC. Big 10, 14, 16, or 20 can then pick two or four more teams

Yes. “Cripple” is very subjective. I’d argue that by already having P6 and super conferences monikers that they’ve already crippled some conferences.

A very high level look at antitrust:

Antitrust laws are statutes developed by governments to protect consumers from predatory business practices and ensure fair competition . Antitrust laws are applied to a wide range of questionable business activities, including market allocation, bid rigging, price fixing, and monopolies.

Monopolistic - relating to a person or business that has exclusive possession or control of the supply of or trade in a commodity or service.

The three major Federal antitrust laws are: The Sherman Antitrust Act . The Clayton Act . The Federal Trade Commission Act .

Of course we are talking about the fair competition and monopolistic type activities here.

I am nowhere near an expert in this area of the law, but I would say that antitrust is something I would be very wary of if I were the B1G or the SEC. Now, as to what that carefulness entails to keep everyone happy - above my pay grade.

There’s also multiple entity coordination (i.e., collaboration among competitors). I don’t think they strengthen their case by saying that they pressured other entities/worked together to bring down the PAC. If it happens because of individual decisions then I see no issue, but collaborating together to pull it off moves it into fishy territory.

It’s what I think some of the conferences might accuse ESPN/P4 of when ESPN starts manipulating the market by talking with several conferences together and telling them what to do.

Like NA, this is far from my area of expertise.

I didn’t finish reading this article. I honestly lost interest about halfway through, but there’s a lot of information here.

I guess teams are free to roam the alliance as long as the music is still playing
