Conference Realignment (Part 2) đŸ—ș

I ask what do you think? If CLT could begin winning at a pretty high level in football and get the support of more of its alumni plus the community, since Charlotte is the 22nd largest TV market, could a P5 justify bringing us in?

Of course they could.

Yes! But we need more people to step up. We need to double or triple our support. If more of our alumni and the Charlotte community would take pride in who they are, we are and who we are becoming, the sky is the limit. I have no clue why they wouldn’t be proud of OUR university. Winning helps also but it is not the cure for every single problem.

I bet we could go to city business leaders and ask them for commitment levels of support IF we were in a P5 conference
and it would be substantial. Because it would mean eyeballs and actual return on investment.

It’d be impressive if we did that in a way that we could present a level of future financial business support based on a P5 invite
to help entice an actual P5 invite.

We should have expected and received more support from the city a long time ago. A vibrant, successful university AND athletics program can (and has) do as much or more for the city and region than most businesses the city supports monetarily.

They’re going to be taken off of linear TV, and the payout is going to be down to about $20MM per team, though not sure how much production costs Apple will share. Rumored that they will have to cover about $3MM per school for those.

This is a major blow to that league. Knocks it down to nearer to AAC level payouts, with even less visibility.

That’s prior to the Buff’s leaving as well. If they loose Arizona, ect
the AAC is in really good shape. I don’t see SMU leaving for that money. Travel cost and lack of viewership would negate any gains.

If that’s accurate I could see Oregon and Washington joining Arizona to the Big XII

If it’s as bad as believed what are the chances UW and OU go independent and market their own media rights jointly year by year to kick the can till they get their Big 10 invite?

That would be a pretty formidable duo.

Of course that would take them out of the running for a conference auto bid.

They are in a real pickle here.

Some more from the WVU guy:

Deal will be for $20m per school for up to 12 schools. apple will take over PACN absorbing the production costs (last minute add over the weekend) and give a one-time payment of $70m (which just so happens to cover the comcast debt) paid directly to the conference.

PACN will become a subscription add on to Appletv and additional payouts would trigger to the conference when certain tiers of subscribers are met. $1 per sub per quarter. Tiers are 1m, 5m, 10m, 20m, 30m, 40m etc.

GK is going to recommend going to 12 and paying half shares to the new additions for the duration of this contract which will leave the rest of their shares to be divided amongst the remaining original members based on “aggregate television ratings over the previous decade”.

Basically $30m (or if AZ leaves that would be $40m) to divvy up between the remaining 9 (or 8)-heavily weighted to Washington, Oregon, and Utah.

Unknown currently if this will placate ORWA. At 14 the B12 doesn’t have enough late night inventory to appease what ESPN needs. So ESPN could buy some of the games from Apple.

At 16 B12 would have plenty to cover that so there are talks that ESPN might kick in more $ to B12 contract if ORWA join just to lock down the late night stuff. Nothing really substantial but maybe an extra $2m per team.

Well, if they don’t meet again then that would be something!

This would be a nightmare, and seems like the kind of b.s. an athletic department like ours would usually be saddled with.

If you don’t bounce out after this meeting today you’re crazy.
