? He did pursue adding them. Itâs more likely the PAC schools said theyâre not interested, and that they like their odds of retaining the PAC brand, then luring schools from both the MWC and AAC.
I just donât see then getting enough to lure in teams from the aac to just the extra travel expense. They said $20 million wasnât enough to warrant travel across the country, but theh expect others will want to join them to do the same for less?
They were only worth $20 million when all the better brands in the league were there. Theyâre all gone now. I donât see them getting more than the AAC is currently getting, though I expect the aac to take a haircut after the current deal is up.
ALL OF THIS
PlusâŠthat $20MM was on Apple streamingâŠnot even a national platform. Just donât see how anyone would join those 2 leftovers for extended travel, unknown media package and probably not any more $$.
Oh yeahâŠand having to pay an exit fee to boot.
None of that makes any sense.
Just a reminder that the Pac-12 had an offer of $30M+ from ESPN but thought they could get something similar to B10 and SEC money, at which point ESPN said goodbye and gave that money to the Big 12.
Thereâs no âbest of the restâ combination to be had that would warrant anything above a $10m per school per year TV contract. Is $3m more worth spending it on travel?
As with most lawsuits, the attorneys will make out like banditos and everyone else will mot
I am fine with Army Navy never being a conference game unless they met in the CCG. There are 14 teams in the league if they join. There are plenty of other teams for each to play.
Iâm looking forward to them joining the league.
They need a contractual option that if they are to meet in the CCG that the army navy game becomes the CCG and the American sends the next best two to the scheduled CCG.
Itâs highly unlikely but if it ever happened it would get the conference even more visibility.
Makes more sense for the MAC to add UMass, Delaware and Liberty. JMU, ODU, and Marshall would have been a good match too.
Exit fee is a big deal. MWC is like $35M and AAC is maybe $30M as I understand it. You need maybe 8 teams that can make that deal? Canât see them getting anywhere close to 8.
To clear this up, this is from an article published 3 weeks ago (and is still accurate aside from the # of PAC teams remaining, and overlooking the 2 year grace period those schools would have):
What is the exit fee for Pac-12 targets from the Mountain West and AAC?
Mountain West programs would have to pay the conference $34 million to leave ahead of the 2024 season. While that number would drop to $17 million if they wait until 2025, the Pac-12 only has four member schools for the 2024 season, ensuring that it cannot afford to wait another year.
AAC programs are required to give the conference a 27-month notice and pay a $10 million exit fee. The Cincinnati Bearcats, Houston Cougars and UCF Knights recently negotiated their departure by paying an $18 million exit fee to join the Big 12 ahead of the 2023 season.
The AAC exit fees are actually a lot lower, but those 3 schools paid extra to cut their notice time down significantly.
And, as we already know, the Pac-2 can wait until mid 2026, so not as rushed as that piece says.
They CAN wait until 2026âŠbut they will have no schedule.
Football teams are scheduled almost a decade in advanceâŠwho are they going to find to play over the next 2 years?? They canât just play each other 12 times each year.
And I have no idea about scheduling for the other sports too.
They need to merge or join a Conference statâŠtime is not on their side with this.
Only thing way I can figure for them to build a schedule next year if they stay as a two team conference in the near term until the figure out what to do.
Playing a home and home gets you to 2 games. Then use some of that PAC money to pay teams to break up their games and play the PAC instead.
For example, I think we host JMU next year. The PAC pays both of us and we host one of the teams and JMU goes to play at the other team. But you have to do that 10 times to get a full 12 game schedule for both teams which seems unlikely.
Edit: I forgot both teams likely already have 4 OOC games scheduled for next year. So you would need to find the money to do the above plan 6 times, not 10. A little easier but still unlikely.
Adding to that, you would then need to convince at least 3 schools to join in 2025. With 5 total teams you could do home and home against all other teams for 8 games plus your previously scheduled 4 OOC.
Then you need to get to a full conference in 2026.
We have an opening for a road game in 2025. Cancel the JMU series and host either OSU or WSU next season.
I believe they would be able to build at least a 10 game schedule for the next 2 years if they wanted to.
4 OOC already scheduled, then 2 for H&H between the two, plus 4 more games against FCS / D2 and FBS willing to reschedule if you grease their palms.
Also, were there any scheduled OOC games for PAC teams leaving for other leagues that were going to be against new conference mates in the B1G & Big 12? That might open up additional slots.
Then thereâs UMass. Theyâre whores and will play anyone for money. UConn might even be available.
Finally, they should declare themselves the PAC title game participants for next year and play a 3rd game for the league title.
Itâs ugly, but doable.
