It’s all about the !
Throwing sh*t at the wall yet again!
I’ve been thinking about this and I now believe it won’t hurt UCONN.
Their basketball was able to win a title in the AAC so they can do it in the Big12.
The simple fact is their basketball is elite and it’s always going to be.
They felt like the AAC was strangling their hoops program.
Are people saying they don’t think it would work? I thought the pushback was more about leaving the Big East, history, regional rivalries, etc. Not about the competition being too stiff.
I think some people are thinking they will regret leaving the big east again.
I’m not so sure.
If they get into the big 12 that strengthens what’s already the best basketball league and they are going to continue to be a power.
I thought part of UConns problems was financing football at a high level and wanting to keep channeling everything into basketball?
And the Big12 has a much better television deal than the AAC had when UConn left. They just won’t have any conference mates anywhere near them. They would make a lot more sense in the ACC.
We could have been UMASS.
First time hearing that about UMass and C-USA 1.0. I suspect Calipari was a leading voice in shooting that down. Of course, he would soon be off to the NBA after a nice run in Amherst that culminated in a Final Four in 1996 - subsequent NCAA sanctions notwithstanding - and the FCS championship caliber football program was still 15 years away from joining the FBS ranks.
BTW, Houston was a member of the now defunct SWC, not the SWAC. Those not invited from the Great Midwest + Metro were Dayton, VCU, and VT.
It’s kind of crazy how Va Tech wasn’t invited.
Probably could have been a pretty decent football conference if the Metro had sponsored that sport.
