Conference Realignment

If you go back in time most college football fanbases never thought much about winning national championships. Now the push is to make college football a crappier version of the NFL. The NFL has better players that are under contract.

I keep saying that. All this has done is make a crappy version of the NBA and NFL.

NTW, we really need to have an American vs PAC hoops challenge in the near future. Would be fun.

I hope he is right.

A 48 team split off would be awesome for us.

I think 48 is a few more than we really want. But yes it does leave 88 other teams on the outside looking in.

I like 40 more (2x20) or 36 (2x18 even better). Leaves 96 or an even 100 in our division.

ESPN (and other networks) are manipulating the entire thing.

The SEC and B10 along with Notre Dame and the top 4 or 5 brands from the ACC should go create their own subdivision. That’s about 40 schools and covers pretty much all of the major brands.

I don’t really like the idea of the split, but with the portal and NIL and no guardrails to level the playing field it just doesn’t make sense anymore to put everyone else in the same subdivision as the top brands. They have nearly unlimited money and we can’t afford to setup and maintain a bouncy house for our football team.

I wouldn’t try to fight that debate on here. There’s a large portion of our fanbase that thinks things will be better when a certain amount of schools are spun off and we are left as division 2.

I will debate you on that.

If, and it’s a big if, the P4 splits off, and the leadership in the new D2 is smart and works together for the betterment of the sport and their own interests, then the lower divisions will rationalize division and conference membership to create regional leagues that will allow more travel by fans, better attendance and subsequent revenue at the gate and lower costs.

Those rationalized leagues and divisions will be healthier and have more fan engagement than the current system and hopefully will be cheaper to operate.

All the teams that are cannon fodder for the P4 now, like us, will have something to play for.

Football and college sports will not die just because of division changes.

History has proven that. Look at all the teams in FCS, D2, D3, NAIA. It’s part of our culture and not going away IF the leadership of the impacted schools are smart, organize themselves properly and don’t fall for the trap of sticking their noses in the air about being in conferences with certain other schools.

Watching the SEC and B10 actions leading up to the CFP this year it is clear they don’t want the ACC or B12 around either. ESPN talking heads doing all they can to keep out everyone except the big 2.

I hope it happens cause the status quo sucks.

I want it to happen as well and hope it’s a complete break off where the P2 is totally separate from the NCAA.

Hopefully the teams left out will be smart and the scenario you suggested will play out. I’m not convinced the teams (colleges) left out will be smart. The tru in-betweens, Wake, GaTech, maybe State, Vandy, & VT are going to make a clean split difficult. Especially the state institutions.

This is where it makes or breaks us IMO

If those middle schools get left behind with us then we are fine because there are still enough brands to build around. If its basically all of the P4 then we could be in some trouble. We need the break away limited to 30-40 teams. With the SEC and their network partners taking aim at the ACC and B12 I think thats a sign they say them in much the same light they see us.

What is to keep the tru in-betweens such as Wake, GaTech, maybe State, Vandy, & VT from then creating their own division and invite a limited minimal amount of schools?

I was hanging out with a VT friend that worked in their AD for years this weekend. It sounds like their basketball team has similar NIL $s to the Niners. He also was not convinced they would make the cut when the break happens. He seemed to think USF, Charlotte, JMU, ect would get the call when the ACC implodes and regional would be much better. Apparently they hate playing Cal, Stanford, and SMU.

I think in the ACC only Clemson, FSU, Miami, and UNC makes the cut. UVA may go to Big 10 with their standards. State, Wake, Duke, VaT, GaT, BC, Syracuse, do not make the cut.

SEC will drop some teams as well.
