CUSA - Perspective

This. So this conference isnā€™t as good as A10 or CUSA 1.0 or the Metro but that doesnt mean squat if we go handle our business. Our based run ever came out of the Sunbelt. The conference is there for the taking - we just have to go seize it. We know we can do it - we have done it in every conference we have been in except for the A10 - no reason to think we cant do it again.
Hereā€™s one big oneā€¦Judy Rose

I think everyone knows I am not her #1 fan, but she isnā€™t going to be here much longer and she knows this next coach will go a long way in setting her legacy.

Itā€™s a position based on facts. Which is much more than anything you contribute. I get it, when you want to be emo about the program it is acceptable, but when others arenā€™t waving their Pom pons they are stupid and selfish.

obvious advantages at depaul. the money and the conference. two very big factors. chicago is a great recruiting area but so is charlotte and all of n.c. for that matter. just look at the class of 2016. north carolina has easily the best talent in the country for that class. three five star players. advantages for us over depaul is that he wouldnt have to completly rebuild the talent here. at depaul he has to get all new players.
There are plenty of good coaches out there, and many of whom could double or triple their salary by coming here. That alone is enough to get their attention. Our facilities are ok, the campus is incredible, the city of Charlotte is a big draw, we sit in the middle of a recruiting hotbed, and the cupboard is not bare. We just need to find a coach that can put the puzzle together. The pieces are strewn across the dining room table right now, but they are all there.

The fact that CUSA is not a good basketball conference means nothing. This conference is waiting for someone to step up and dominate it. Gonzaga (WCC), Memphis (CUSA 2.0), Butler (Horizon), SDSU (Mtn West), Wichita State (MVC), and Belmont (A-Sun) have all proven that you can be very successful in one-bid or two-bid leagues. You just have to whip your c*** out and smack everyone else with it. We need a coach with that type of personality.
our facilities are way better than okay.

And this job is head and shoulders above any MAC program. However, the issue with Hurley is that a win or two this week is going to price us out of the bidding war. Can definitely see a BE school like Depaul throwing big money at him.

No on most of those, especially usm. Sorry, theres a reason usm is trying to update that dump. Halton was nicer than that arena the 1st time we were in CUSA. Nothings changed since.

Our practice facilities are solid too.

Look, the only thing that is wrong with this program is success on the court. And thats big. But if someone comes in and turns things around, not only does this become a feature program in this league, it instantly gets brought up in realignment/expansion discussion.

Youā€™re cherry picking the exceptions not the rule. I suppose you make the same arguments for Winthrop. LOL.

Whatever, it is what it is and its up to candidates to decide. As someone said money could turn heads.

Coaches that have left the MAC for higher level jobs have all ended up in P5 jobs. The MAC is a coaching wasteland, but if you win there you make a big jump.

I have been so focused on our situation that I have not payed attention to others, but a lot of where a Hurley might or might not go is going to depend on what jobs come available this year. Going to a P5 school that just fired their coach can be the kiss of death, because you can count on a bunch of really, really good programs shoving a lot of losses down your throat every year. Charlotte is a pretty good job because you can win here. You can recruit here. We are in a major city, and have the facilities and fans to support success if we can get some.

I might go so far as to say that we have the best job in NC, the epicenter of college basketball. Think about it, anyone that follows K at Duke is never going to measure up. Ask Gene Bartow. If Olā€™ Roy gets fired his successor is going to have to pick up the pieces and get to the Final Four quickly because most of their fans are not real fans. Who else? Davidson is an anomaly that can only exist while Bob McKillop stays there. ECU? Well we know that Lebo is never leaving, but even he cannot get them beyond sucking. I think Charlotte is a gem and peopleā€™s memories are short. Let us win, and let us get ranked, and we will rock Halton.

Nugget delivers again.

Nice sales pitch!

Very nice. Totally agree.

This, and this is also why I have more emotional investment in the basketball program than in football. I feel like with basketball there is at least some shot in the dark that we can be relevant and make a deep run into the tournament sometime in the near future. Football requires a lot more.

I think we should reach out to everyone, even people who may reject us. Hell, call Greg Marshall. We have more money, better facilities, and a better area to recruit in than a lot of schools. I donā€™t know anything about Buffaloā€™s finances or facilities, but the weather is brutal, and the city is kind of falling apart. Never underestimate intangibles like that, especially when family is involved. Didnā€™t Odomā€™s wife play a major rule in the decision to come here? Plus, Hurley is an NC name which would help in recruiting state high schools and Iā€™m sure it wouldnā€™t hurt to be closer to Durham and many of his old colleagues.

Iā€™m not saying that we are an easy choice for Hurley, if we offer the job, but I do think we have a lot of little things going for us. Yeah, CUSA sucks, but people who know basketball also understand that thereā€™s a difference between coaching at UTEP or Charlotte vs FIU or Rice.

No offense, that might be the most insane thing ever said hereā€¦ From AD support, to facilities, to fan support, to conference membership, to cash flowā€¦ We are behind everyone but Davidson and ECU (that job will always be bad)ā€¦ Roy winning 2 NCā€™s (methods aside) show you can get out of the shadow of a legend. Duke will be just fine.

Who woulda thunk the MVC would be any good after Creighton left? Well, look no further than Witchita, Northern Iowa, and Illinois State, and MO State coming on strong. It would only take the top half of CUSA to make a decent BBall conference. Thatā€™s on top of already being pretty good at football, soccer, baseballā€¦Folks have said Illinois State and MO State may be good additions in a realignmentā€¦

Okay, so maybe I was on a bit of a ā€œMajor is gone highā€, but ā€œmost insane thing everā€? That is high praise indeed on this board. I have had this conversation with Jay Bilas about the post-K Duke, and this is his take on what will happen. Obviously since K gets weekly blood transfusions from puppys he will never age, his hair will never turn grey, and he will coach forever so we wil not find out. And I disagree about Roy. If there is a God his NCs will get wiped, but regardless, he has not been to the Final Four since 2009 and Heel fans expect at least that from him. Hell, in 2010 they went to the NIT. Nope, without the cheating the Tarheels have no magic. Once again they got swept by Duke. When they finally get what they deserve even Clemson will get a win in Chapel Hill. Of course the money is great, but that job will be toxic when the next coach comes in.

Seen games at Alumni Arena on the campus of UB several timesā€¦ Halton is clearly a much better facility. Itā€™s larger, is a lot more aesthetically pleasing, and is way more up to date. As for the city of Buffalo vs the city of Charlotte, aside from the weather, downtown Buffalo along the water front is actually very nice. Being from western NY I have seen first hand that Buffalo is a lot better now than it was in the early 2000ā€™s. Its not on the level that Charlotte is, but it is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. From my personal experience, as I had to choose between attending UB and Charlotte, I visited Charlotte in March and it was 70 and sunny. I visited UB in April and it was 37 and raining. It wasnā€™t a hard choice after that

You must be talking about downtown on the water north of the General Mills factory because it is pretty sketchy in that area even with the new casino there. I was even told to be careful on the other side of downtown where the Anchor Bar is. The summertime weather in Buffalo is nice, however.
