The funny thing about this post? Well, there are several.
1. The guy who called the radio on Friday, Jason from Greensboro or Raleigh or somewhere, actually said, "You can't judge a program by what happens on the scoreboard." Now if you guys think somebody who'd say that is spouting brilliance, I am wasting my time here.
2. Are UNCC fans really upset that somebody would say North Carolina should be humilated by having a football program that is so pathetic? It's not about "entitlement," it's about recognizing that Carolina has everything you need to have a winning program excpet, apparently, leadership. Surely UNCC fans don't think it's "acceptable" for UNCC athletics to aspire to the occasional "moral victory" and accept the loser's proposition that it's impossible to compete for wins, conference championships and berths in playoffs (when applicable). Shouldn't North Carolina be held to the same standard.
3. The caller asked me to cite specifics. I was sitting in a tent at a tennis tournament. I don't have the Tar Heel football guide committed to memory. But I don't think you need to have a lot of data to have the sense North Carolina has underperformed in football. So when I got home I looked up some numbers. Under John Bunting, North Carolina is 25-39 overall and 16-26 in the ACC. Four of the ACC wins are against Duke. The Tar Heels are 6-19 against ranked opponents with an average score of a 33-17 loss. They've been beaten by 30 or more points 12 times in Bunting's tenure. Does that strike anybody as acceptable?
4. The caller asked me how many games Carolina should "expect" to win in a given year. I said, "All of them." Isn't that how any team should approach a season? Of course I don't expect any team to go undefeated year in and year out (maybe Independence High), but if you're playing major college football and you're telling your alumni and supporters "We need your support to build top-flight facilities so we can compete," and then you go 25 years without winning a CONFERENCE title, aren't you guilty of deception? I never said North Carolina should be top 10 in football every year. I said North Carolina should ASPIRE to be a top 10 program in football and work toward that. If you're going to do that, is John Bunting the coach who can make that happen? That's the relevant question.
2 Things:
1 - I respect the hell out of you to care enough about our opinion to come on here and “discuss” this in a professional manner.
2 - I still think you (like many Tarheel fans), when discussing your beloved Heels, convey a certain arrogance of entitlement…whether intentional or not…that seems to be a defining characteristic of a lot of Tarheel fans. Which is also what makes them so easy to loathe.
However…you are NOT the worst kind of Tarheel fan (The Wal-Mart fan with NO affiliation to the school whatsoever)…and you had the beanbag to come on here, face your criticism and say your peace respectfully.
So, you’re OK in my book!!
…however, don’t expect an invitation into The Truth Revolution.
I’m glad you defend your honor with some civility, if you were fat seed your post might have been as colorful as you suck or charlotte is a loser school (such a proud duke grad my a**). However UNC is never going to be good if they put loyalty to alumni as coaches over wins, basketball program excluded of course, and you don’t win by inspiring your team with the annual beatdown by the top ten team. What the heck is that about anyway, has losing become so acceptable that at least UNC fans can say they were beaten by the best?

The caller asked me how many games Carolina should “expect” to win in a given year…

16 games. That is my answer. The Panthers should win 16 games a year.
Oh wait… I think you were referring to unc-chapel hill (isn’t that the official name of the school?). Sorry. When you speak of “Carolina”, most folks in Charlotte think of the Panthers.
Good question Gill…I wonder how he did know he was being discussed here…hmmmmmmm?

Great Point Over…maybe we can get Mr. Poole’s opinion on this subject as well. If they insist on being called “Carolina” for athletics and WE insist on being called “Charlotte” for athletics…why did he refer to us as UNCC repeatedly in his post?
Double Standard anyone?
Lack of respect to another program?
Again…intentional or not…a typical Elitist Tarheel attitude!!!

I don’t know… South Carolina Game****s refer to themselves as “Carolina” as well. So, I suppose every state has one… Perhaps, South Carolina and UNC-Chapel Hill should fight this one out…
NA - you beat me to it! I was going to say that Mike Persinger breathed an enormous sigh of relief when he saw Mr. Poole’s name on the board!
This is the line that got me:
D.P.: “We should NEVER lose to Rutgers at anything” (I guess all other teams should just roll over when they see ‘UNC’ on the jersey - get that memo out to all Div. 1 schools ASAP)
One thing I notice about Tar Heel fans - they are the most “Mr. Hyde” before a loss and the most “Dr. Jekyll” after a loss. David Poole sounds downright reasonable with a 1-3 record. Somehow, I imagine the comments would be a bit more elitist if they were 3-1.

I totally agree will everything you just said. I like Bunting personally, but he is not getting it done in anyway shape or form. I have a friend is is one of the all time winningest coaches in college football and he once told me Carolina had some of the best facilities in all of college football and there was no reason for them not to be a top 20 program. Look at the quality recruiting classes Bunting has brought in even though all has does is lose. That tells me Carolina recruits itself and if you had a quality coach in there (ie. Mack Brown) there is no reason they couldn’t be a upper tier football program. I completely disagree with the theory that they are a basketball school and they will never be good in football. Right now Carolina is #13 on the list of schools with the most players in the NFL, the talent is and has been there it has just not been properly utilized (ie. Willie Parker).
Welcome to the board David!!! I hope you will post often and continue to share you insights with us on whatever topic you wish.
I know where UNC-Charlotte is. It’s a big school over there off N.C. 49, very nice athletic facilities. Had a kid go there for a year, as a matter of fact. The signs all say “The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.” So as far as I can tell, that’s the school’s name.
But I have looked and I have looked and I still haven’t found this school named Charlotte. Is that near South Park or something?

lol… :lmao:
I have done the same search for “Carolina,” but only came up with the Carolina Panthers.
What does a search for “Charlotte” turn up? How many pages in Google do you have to dig into before you find any kind of link to Bobby Lutz or Judy Rose on that query?

Thanks for proving my point you horse’s ass!!
That’s the EXACT double standard elitist attitude I would expect from a Tarheel fan!
If you don’t know where the school “Charlotte” is…how about telling us where the school “Carolina” or “UNC” is…ass.
If it’s OK for YOUR school to call their athletic dept “Carolina” or “UNC” when your ACTUAL name is The University of North Carolina at a Chapel Hill, why can you not give OUR school that same respect?
Answer: Because you are an elitist Tarheel fan…aka: Horse’s Ass
Now…please do us all a favor and get the F@#$ off our board!!!
There never has been a hyphen in the name David. It is the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, just like your school is the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Don’t waste your breath NA. Talking facts to a tar-hole is like putting a candy bar in front of Poole and expecting him to let it just sit there. Waste of time and effort.
The University of North Carolina existed for about 175 years before Bonnie Cone started what became UNCC (note: No hyphen). I am sorry if that bugs you guys, but that doesn’t change reality. I notice on this board there’s some support for changing the name of the school. I think that’s a fine idea. But don’t use University of North Carolina at Charlotte academically and commercially to get the benefits of being part of the UNC system and then run from it in sports because of this massive inferiority complex you guys have always had.
The first part of what you said suggests that we want to be “UNC”. That is not the case at all.
And then you say that we have an inferiority complex. Not at all. There is plenty going for Charlotte’s only public university - it is a great school! I’m just tired of being confused with your school. The naming convention is completely ridiculous. If they wanted to employ it as intended, we should be talking about UNC Raleigh, UNC Boone, UNC Chapel Hill, and UNC Greenville, just like the Cal schools do.
The less time you spend being obsessed with the non-existant inferiority complex, the less often you’ll come off as an obnoxious elitist David. Just being honest.
