I wonder what stats are out there on guys increase in speed. The a10 plays fast paced ball for the most part (except richmond) and is very guard heavy. If slow is Phil Jones slow then he’d be someone worth looking at… at least for blocking potential until major taught him some post moves. Major obviously still has a focus on big guys considering how much braz said he was learning in the post.
If he’s super slow it may not be a good call for this league. He could do well someone else though. Looks like he could go Ivy? The education side of me says “heck yes. Go Ivy league, kid!”
7-2, 260 lb guys leaving the state isn’t really a good thing. He did average 16 points and 11 rebounds his senior year and then preped at a quality prep school for a year as well, so I’d bet he has already come a long ways since you guys first saw him 3 years ago. Sounds like a pretty decent project this late. Wojick did a good job with 7 footer Jerome Jordan a few years ago, and they have a big team and pound you so this is probably a pretty good fit for him.
Sure, but he was also a huge project as well when he got there. I think Wojick can probably help this guy reach his potiental, whatever that is.There are plenty of slow lumbering big men that carve out basketball careers at places that play a styles they can be successful. Out of all the teams in CUSA, they tend to play the slowest and biggest. I don’t think this guy will have to be athletic to contribute for them. He’ll be a lot bigger than 95+% of the teams he plays, That’s a commodity in basketball, so if he learns to used that size I think he can probably be a decent player.
I’m for taking a chance on big guys like this occasionally if they fit and you think they can develop but personally I’d rather have a 6-5 guy at center that is a very good player than just a big body, but I’d take a big slow guy like A. Sabonis anyday. Everyone wants the total package, size, speed, skill, shooting etc, but you wont get it all and given the choice size would be my last criteria and then probably athleticism, rather than the where some teams start.
I’ve seen enough worthless big guys or guys that were basically just athletes over the years that I’d rather have guys significantly smaller at every position that can actually shoot and dribble. As long as they play hard on defense and get a hand in the other teams face, I think that will carry you a lot farther in general in college basketball than just a team of athletes or big guys. Still don’t like to see a conference mate taking a guy out of NC though.

:)) Covered all your bases there. “I like taking chances on big guys. I’ve see enough worthless big guys. I’d take a big, slow guy. I’d rather have guys significantly smaller. Personally I’d rather have a 6’5” guy at center. Don’t like to see a conference mate taking a 7’1" NC guy."

Just making a point. At that size if you have enough skills it doesn’t matter how slow you are.I’d expect this teenager as slow as he is still has better wheels than Sabonis had late in his career when he was pushing 40, overweight and on bum knee’s after all the injuries. He still played effectivly with the best in the world even at that point.
If this kid has 5% of his skill level he can probably play at this level. He’s improved and Wojick saw something he liked.
