Dear consulting group...

washburn sounds like some kind of sick disease.

here’s why washburn

too bad the school is in kansas.
I love this one.

I imagine a bunch of suits sitting at a meeting table at Washburn University awaiting the unveiling of the university’s new tagline. There is a nervous tension in the air as they await the expensive new motto that they are convinced will pay dividends in the future.

The stamats representative is standing in front of his presentation board with a black cloak covering the mysterious tagline that the university officials have pinned onto their hopes for a better future.

The moment finally comes and the black cloak is lifted with much fanfare.

WHOOSH

Washburn University’s new tagline?

That’s it.
Holy Crap! I picked the wrong business… I can’t believe someone would have the balls to actually present that as the result! Maybe there’s something I’m missing, but c’mon… for real!

fixed

I don’t want to thump my chest too loudly, but if you saw the changes at High Point University since Nido Quebein took over. He is a PR guru and has done wonders in getting the name out, their website, http://highpoint.edu, is great. Lots of photos, things worth reading, ads for a license plate, campus news, all on the opening page. They have an ice cream truck on campus, painted puple and white, HPU flags are everywhere, the banners on the lamps are changed often, they have holiday season type banners up now (of course with a flashy HPU).

They have pride in their school. Our students don’t have it, nor will they get it until the administration takes that step. Now put everything on the table and open the eyes!

I’m marching into the chancellor’s office, cape flying proudly.

High Point University: "The classes are hard, but I’m learning so much. My future will be better because I came to High Point University. The University offers 45 undergraduate majors and five graduate-degree programs. It is accredited by the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and is a member of the NCAA, Division I and the Big South Conference. "

That’s not very catchy. How much did it cost?

Neither did their ā€œBe extraordinary!ā€ slogan. Read Nido’s bio, he’s the one directing this. And apparently it was all done on campus too.

High Point Chancellor:

What a vision we have!

To grow our rigorous academic programs (look for a School of Communications soon), to enhance the student life (music, sports, Greek life… the works!), to construct and maintain state-of-the-art facilities (breaking ground on a Business School, field house, wellness center, and a brand new freshmen dorm), and to brand High Point University nationally and internationally (new website, national public relations, area awareness campaign, HPU Press, etc.).

We mean what we say… while you were away this summer, we worked around the clock to clean, paint, furnish, renovate, upgrade and prepare the campus for YOU! We invested a ton of TLC to show you that we care. We’ve only just begun. Onwards and upwards we travel together.

Please be patient as we construct new buildings and surely cause you some inconvenience. Progress may be painful, but it is rewarding, too.

Welcome to your university. Let us know how you feel, what you think and what we should do together.

UNC Charlotte ā€˜Wait, don’t forget the UNC’ Chancellor:
Establishing an institutionwide approach to our brand and marketing will not be without pain and it will offend traditional notions of academic autonomy. Moreover, successful organizations have found that an effective identity is not simply a slogan or a tag line. Our constituents – whether our students, alumni, research partners or the public at large – must actually experience what we say we are.

It is for that reason that I do not subscribe to the view that raising UNC Charlotte’s presence either regionally, in the state, or nationally is simply a matter of changing our name. It is the academic reputation – the brand equity, if you will – of ā€œThe University of North Carolinaā€ system that helps to attract the best faculty, staff, and students. In short, we won’t be looking for a ā€œquick fixā€ to the challenges of institutional identity.

Whatever we may do in branding and marketing cannot end with the public relations staff or the web page. UNC Charlotte must actually become better connected to the region we serve.

With apologies to the fine folks at High Point…

The Top Ten reasons to attend UNC Charlotte.

  1. Beautiful campus, underfunded athletics, faculty that cares… who wouldn’t love THAT???

  2. Too many college athletic departments rock. This place is stale AND generic.

  3. There’s a real sense of searching for an identity here. As soon as our school finds one, it will be our fourth.*

  4. Values matter at Charlotte. Tailgating is encouraged, provided it is done within specific guidelines and out of sight of the rest of the campus visitors.

  5. The Athletic Director knows my e-mail address. She answers them all. I can send them anytime and they will be answered. However, I’m not sure what else in accomplished by the office.

  6. Charlotte, NC is one of financial capitals of the world, and it has ignored this university. Athletics gain minimally from the resources available in this community. ā€œOpportunity for growthā€ is not a phrase, it’s a way of life.

  7. There is always something going on in the world of 49ers athletics. Just don’t look for it in the Charlotte Observer.

  8. It’s easy to make friends here. 49ers fans are few and far between. When you find one, there is an instant bond, because they may be your only means of learning more about the teams.

  9. Getting good seats isn’t hard, but in the future, it will be. As soon as we find an identity, all we’ll have to do is learn how to promote it.

  10. I didn’t understand the importance of community until I came to Charlotte. I’m part of something special here and I’m learning what it means to be part of something bigger than myself, even if no one else knows…………or appears to care.

    • our next identity will follow such landmark identities as:
  1. UNCC
  2. Charlotte 49ers
  3. 49er Pride

QFT…

Dubois constantly kisses butt to the ā€œinstitutionā€ that consistently underfunds this university.
It’s really starting to go beyond embarrassing.

This whole thing is depressing and is making me quite ill.

Excellent job Silvio.

My son is now considering USC after seeing the link. The sad thing is that he’s heard enough complaining from me lately that he just doesn’t understand why the administration is so uptight about certain issues, he sees things in the simple way that a 13-year old should… why is tailgating allowed as far away as possible from the SAC, why are there no ā€œgoodā€ Charlotte items for sale in stores (locally and in Charlotte), why do the rent-a-cops continue to tell his father that he can’t take photos in Halton when he’s wearing a media pass in clear view? If he perceives these things as problems, what will other potential students see them as?

We went to a HPU basketball game last week. During a time out, the announcer said, ā€œBe sure to support your team with Panther gear, available now at the High Point University Bookstore, Omega Sports, Steve and Barry’s and Wal-mart.ā€ The Panthers get more damn exposure in retail than the 49ers.

I could go on, but hell, I’m getting depressed. I seriously might consider banking my contributions to the University away for a few years until things change. (Don’t worry Nick, my most recent contribution for the Harris House has been sent.)

Great Post.

I have been banking my dollars as well (stocks mostly), its good to get something rewarding for your money at least.

this has been my M.O. for 4 years now.

This whole thing is depressing and is making me quite ill.

I’m acquiring a newfound appreciation of Bonnie Cone. She had to put up with a lot of the same nonsense and always fought on the side of the school. The university owes a lot to having someone with a backbone who cared.

ā€œApparantly Cone pushed persistently for things she believed the College Center should have. McIntosh (UNC system honcho) lectured her about not taking his decisions as official and being too impatient with him when he couldn’t do something she wanted done. When she complained about needing smaller class sizes, he chided her, saying that finances would cause trouble ahead.ā€

I’m at the same point and would do just that, but unfortunately, it would cause a big stink with someone. I will at least cut the contribution in half or less if this study does not include football or a name change.

We need some people in charge to grow a pair. What’s the state going to do? Cut our funding even more? I can see the article in the Concord paper now. ā€œLegislators in Raleigh giving Charlotte The Shaft Againā€.
