Defensive coordinator & other staff changes

I agree. It’s obvious West will be on this staff. I have every reason to believe it will be in the same role as last year.

I don’t know why people keep kicking the can down the road on this. He won’t be on staff. Well he won’t be co-DC. Well, he won’t be calling plays.

Anytime we hire a coach, looking at their resume is certainly normal and reasonable. Brown has 40 years of experience. No reason he can’t be the lone DC.

I’ve already written off the coming season as a waste of time. Hope I’m wrong, but without major changes on defense and what seems to be little help incoming on the D line, I just don’t know how we could possibly have a good season. The offense should be fairly good, but it will have to be one of the best in the nation to compensate for the likely struggles on the defensive side of the ball.

Coaching and scheme CAN make a big difference, even with mostly the same guys. We saw that during Spencers one season here. We went from a well below average Defense to a well above average one with mostly the same kids…might not happen this time, but it is possible.

I just dont want the expectations and potential that this program possesses to be lowered in the name of positivity, I am extremely critical of our athletic program due to the fact that we have so much potential and constantly under achieve, and I dont want us to accept mediocrity and subpar performances as the norm, and judging by some of the post on this forum, we are lowering our expectations in basketball and football to meet the realities on the court and field, and sometimes it takes harsh criticism to change the trajectory of a program, and the reality of our program in revenue generating sports is that we are a "has-been basketball program, and a glorified FCS football program, that is our reality, and we cant be positive or optimistic about our future in these two sports without head coaching changes in basketball, and DC changes in football

I am not critical of Browns hiring, I read his resume and was impressed by his P5 and NFL experience, my criticism ( and it may be premature ) is with the potential of West continuing to coach the defensive line, which was the weakest point of a horrible defense

Agreed, and that is what I am worried about, after reading Greg Browns resume, (and I never heard of him previously), I came away impressed, P5 experience at Purdue, Colorado, Arizona, Alabama, Louisville, Missouri, and Auburn, and NFL experience with six different teams, but he seemed to only coach DBs, and is only familiar with the secondary, which makes me believe that he will be a true Co-defensive coordinator here, in which West is probably coaching the defensive line and possibly the linebackers, while Brown coaches the secondary, and he has brief tenures which tells me that he is a stop-gap coach that temporarily fixes under performing secondaries and moves on to the next opportunity

This is spot on. The bar has been lowered with Healy especially as it relates to when we first hired him.

I think folks were so quick to jump on board that now they have no intention of jumping off. He will get every excuse he can (COVID, low pay, etc) to explain his inability to run a program.

When the bar for a new hire is that he’s not friends with the coach and he has experience, it’s pretty obvious Will is going to get a pass no matter what he does. It’s gotten so bad Judy Rose was drug into a conversation about Marcus West not getting fired.:grinning:

I would argue complacent fans that don’t hold an AD accountable and make a litany of excuses is much more harmful than negative fans.

This was a simple task. Fire the DC and hire a new DC. Mission not accomplished

I don’t see anyone lowering expectations. We brought in a new DC and the basketball coach may be let go after the season if the season keeps going the way it is. I am going to wait until the basketball season is over and for the football stuff to get settled before I start being upset.

If we reboot with basketball we will likely see significant roster turnover, more so than previous years, as some of the kids can leave without sitting out. Which means another year of down basketball. It may not take 4 years to turn around basketball, but year one almost always sucks.

In football lets see what happens. Brown will almost certainly be calling the D and I don’t think the talent was our main issue. West had our best pass rusher dropping back in coverage 40% of the time. If we run a more traditional D and put the kids in a position to succeed we might be better on the line and the back end than we think we are. Or maybe we suck. I dunno. I wanna see before I call anything a mistake.

Either way expectation is bowl next year in football and a top 4 in CUSA in basketball this year. If we change basketball coach my expectation for next year is around 10 wins. If we don’t then I again expect top 4.

Make no mistake about it, the bar has not been lowered. I have talked with the AD, and they are not happy at all with last year.

We won 5 games last year with one of the worst defenses in the country. Healy made the changes he thought were necessary, whether we agree with them or not. His career is on the line so I’d say he’s got a little more at stake than we do.

Our offense should be one of the best in the conference this year. If the defense can make minor improvements we will be bowling. If they make drastic improvements, it could be a really good year. If the defense remains the same, we will be looking for a new coach.

You need to work on your anger management. You ain’t nearly angry enough to post on this board.

Good to know.

I was speaking about a certain portion of the fan base. Not the AD.

My personal expectations for our football program have never been sky high. We’ve only had one winning season since we’ve started playing almost 10 years ago. My expectations are we play hard throughout the season and make a bowl game.

My expectations, bowl nearly every year, every 2-3 contend for the conference title.

A bowl season is the minimum on the field success for me, but stringing multiple 6-6 years together isn’t going to cut it either.

I thought beating Duke is more important than going to a bowl game.

I never said that, I said if we’re scared to schedule Duke to try to get into a bowl game I’d have a big big problem with it, and I do. Maybe we can see if UMASS will swap out a game with Maryland, UNC, State, or Ole Miss. We’re fortunate to be able to get teams like that to play us at home and I love our scheduling strategy.

When we beat Duke it was important but then fall completely apart the second part of the season took away that feeling

For sure. In this case though I look at our linemen on the roster and see very little depth and not much to build on. Hopefully I’m wrong. I’d hate to waste the talent on offense with atrocious defense again.

And basketball too??

Basketball isn’t over yet. They aren’t going to comment much publicly on a campaign still underway.

They didnt comment at the end of the season last year either despite your repeated assertion that they would. We have no idea what Hill currently thinks of Sanchez or how warm his seat is. #StealthAD. Seems we got a new logo and some good olympic sports hires so far from Hill. Judy did those things too.
