I think our alumni needs to be called out. As a whole, our alumni needs to step up regarding football and the University as a whole. I think he has gone about it the wrong way though. He has ticked me off the way he has talked about alumni on the radio, and his e-mail replies to metro and others. He looks at folks like us and thinks we are a bunch of idiots, but the people on this board are probably the most passionate when it comes to this University. Most of our alumni and students probably couldn’t even tell you who the chancellor is, much less if he is doing a good job or not. He needs to take our opinions into account, and stop sending smart@ss e-mail repies to people who care about this place.

I have an idea on how to get more people to do this. Print out several copies of the application from the link in my signature.
-Fill out the info for friend that you know isn’t a 49er club member
-Add your name to the referral box
-Collect a check (Collect as much as you can from them, if they can or will only give $49 then fine. Hell collect $20 if thats all you can get.)
Mail in all the completed applications you can to the Athletic Foundation
In case you don’t know, you receive priority points for every person you refer to the 49er club and you receive credit for all the money they donate when they join(For the first year). So if you only give $49 when you join, but you collect $500 from other people you get to join, you get credit for $549. Where you are able to get season tickets is directly based on your priority points, higher the points the better the seat. This is a big deal for basketball and you better believe it will be a big deal for football.
This is a great way to build up your priority point if you don’t have the financial means to do it on your own.
Has anyone collected a 49er application from a new member yet??? We will see a football announcement a lot quicker if Phil see a big increase by the end of the fisical year (June). If he doesn’t see that, he should be worried about starting football and we don’t have anyone to blame but ourselves.
Yes, 5.4% is sad. Everyone can aford skipping a snack/drink at work and sending a $10-20-50 check. But it comes back to marketing and having a vision... which develops PRIDE.
Thread Tangent ALERT!
i saw a letter to a donor of NC State, they are only at 8%, granted they pull from a much bigger base than we do. The letter was basically an “i’m on my knees begging you to donate” type letter.
In it it mentioned other ACC Engineering schools, i think Georgia Tech was like 40+% Maryland and VT were around the 20% range.

Pride starts when future alums are students. I can only vouch for 1998 to 2002, but I can understand why we have such a bad % of alumni giving. The University lacks a true college experience and CHP doesn’t seem to be doing much to change that,
As I stated in an earlier post, if you want to start having students that care the first thing to do is to create an identity, then add football and an actual community, not strip malls and gas stations.

I call BS on that
football isn’t dangling on the edge in regards to how many 49er club members sign up “now”
not one mailer or commercial has implied now is the time to put up or shut up
I have said from day one “give us a campaign to strive for” and if we can’t hit a reasonable, aggressive, achievable number in the given time, I will never utter the word 49er football again, unless I’m talking about Joe Montana.

I agree that should be what occurs, but I can tell you he is look hard at the facts as they are presently and that is a big part of the problem.
The hold up is he and his staff are researching all the things a professional football feasibility group is suppose to do for you. We are apparently to cheap to hire such a group and are choosing to do it on our own. The hold up now is them looking at all the issues Mac’s group were told NOT to look at.
I fully believe you are well intentioned, but you are so naive'
I hate to get on my “you’re just a kid” soapbox, but many of us have followed this University for 10, 20, 30 years and know 10-fold more than you on the hows and whys that have taken place. I can assure you HP, myself, and others’ contacts aren’t dillusional. Hence our sour attitude to CHP.
in 10 years after your coworkers, neighbors, and family have made jabs at Charlotte, get back to us.
yeah we’ll see - I hope you’re wrong on this but I’m not counting on it. I do however have faith in the guy - so we’ll see what happens I guess. I also would like to think my coworkers, enighbors, and family will not take jabs at Charlotte - or I’ll eat them alive

interesting.
sounds like he is looking for the right stat so he can say “see…see…I told you so” in front of TV cameras.
I found it interesting Mac was recently named chair of the of the foundation - which raises capital for all the U. I still say Dubois can’t tell Mac no, and that is our trump card.
could it be the study Dubois is doing now is CYA? So if football starts and bleeds cash, he can say “I told you so”

oh it won’t be in your face stuff but backhanded like this:
“are yall division 1?”
“I can’t believe yall beat an ACC team”
“how is UNC doing?” (referring to Charlotte)
“I like going to games at Halton- up there at UNC”
“when is UNC gonna get football, is that woman who’s kid died still there?”
“what conference are you in now”
“wow? your RPI is 39?” (as if thats impossible)

Uggh… it happens ALL THE TIME in my office. I work with a bunch of SEC and ACC grads. The only one in my office who is respectful and knowledgeable of our program is the guy who graduated from ECU, he was in school when we were in CUSA together.
here are some I have heard in my office…
“WOW you all beat South Carolina!? How did THAT happen!?” - referring to baseball
“Well of course you all lost to Tennessee…” - coworker who thinks little ol’ Charlotte should never beat an SEC school
“Is Winthrop in your conference?”
“You all beat Davidson? WOW! Huge win for you guys.”
“There is no way UNCC will ever have a football team.”
“Hey since you went to UNC, …” - comming from someone who knows I went to UNC CHARLOTTE
It got REAL bad around the time when we played Wake and Maryland down here (for those that don’t know, I work down at the Arena.)
“There is no way you all will stay within 30 of Maryland.”
“How did you all manage to beat Wake Forest? Were some of their players hurt?”
I could go on all day. Of course I had firey responses to each of these comments.
The bottom line is, as long as we are UNCC, people will think we are smalltime in everything from academics to alumni, to what our campus is like, to all of our athletics teams.

That’s not gonna happen Jimmy. As I stated in an earlier post, there has been no jump in contributions since the study came out. In fact, there has been under $5000 sent with a “football” notation to them since the study was released.
And for the record, that 5.4% is not just for contributions to athletics. That’s 5.4% for any contribution to the University by an alum.

The saddest thing is, I think I have heard virtually everyone of these myself, as well as the ones Metro listed above…:unhappy:
My family in Florida during the NCAA Tournament: “Do you think you guys will win it all?” ; “I’m watching you guys on TV, you’re looking good. Go Tar Heels.” ; “I don’t think the Tar Heels will win it all, but I’m rooting for them for you.” ; “How many students do you have at UNCC? 22,000, wow, I thought you guys were small.”
I’ve heard our own students say the “We’ll never have football” thing. A lot of students don’t even know that the push is actually serious (most of those people are closet Tar Heel fans though).
And for everyone who is already sick of the Davidson quotes, don’t worry, they are America’s sweetheart now. It will get worse. We are now playing third fiddle in our own city.
I just think you guys expect way to much in a very short amount of time. He got us the front entrance we have deserved since no later than 1980 - he’s willing to sit down and talk to anyone who calls his office (says many of my friends who have experienced this) - we’re still popping buildings up left and right - and quite frankly, i never leave the civil engineering branch of the engineering college (except maybe the occasional LBST) and it seems as if we’re doing just fine, growing and keeping up with the technologies and expertise that are required to become a leading institution (last I checked we were top 50).
and he’s not going to be straight on the important issues to us (name change, football) - remember, he is a politician to some extent as well - he makes a claim for change before he knows absolutely everything he can about it, then discovers some underlying factor (a serious one, dont drop the stupid “Chapel hill” line here) then risks even more disproval from us when he ends up making (potentially) the right decision in the long run.
as far as the boarderline sarcastic replies hes given some of you - lets be honest for a second - some of the letters I have read on here have been quite sarcastic and have an underlying theme of “you dont know what you’re doing, and I could do it better” - most of us stay up to date on whats happening in the school through this message board and the occasoinal “source” or internal connection that each of us may or may not have. There is a very high possibility that we dont understand all that goes on…
yawn…

My invitation for the Gold Rush Auction came the other day. My reply…No Football…No Name change…No more $$$$$$$
Boo on moving this to University News and Notes. I was hoping by keeping it in Sports it’d stay on the left hand side and get more votes.
Does this mean when I do one on Lutz or Judy in the upcoming weeks it’ll have to be in UN&N as well?
And since I’m already thread-jacking my poll, when should I do the next installment for Dubois? 3 months? 6 months? I want to be consistent and not just throw one up whenever there’s news.
