Do you approve of the job Dubois is doing?
when should I do the next installment for Dubois? 3 months? 6 months?
Make it a poll.

One every 3 months is perfect.

Ask me after the football announcement.

Uggh.. it happens ALL THE TIME in my office. I work with a bunch of SEC and ACC grads. The only one in my office who is respectful and knowledgeable of our program is the guy who graduated from ECU, he was in school when we were in CUSA together.

here are some I have heard in my office…

“WOW you all beat South Carolina!? How did THAT happen!?” - referring to baseball
“Well of course you all lost to Tennessee…” - coworker who thinks little ol’ Charlotte should never beat an SEC school
“Is Winthrop in your conference?”
“You all beat Davidson? WOW! Huge win for you guys.”
“There is no way UNCC will ever have a football team.”
“Hey since you went to UNC, …” - comming from someone who knows I went to UNC CHARLOTTE

It got REAL bad around the time when we played Wake and Maryland down here (for those that don’t know, I work down at the Arena.)

“There is no way you all will stay within 30 of Maryland.”
“How did you all manage to beat Wake Forest? Were some of their players hurt?”

I could go on all day. Of course I had firey responses to each of these comments.

The bottom line is, as long as we are UNCC, people will think we are smalltime in everything from academics to alumni, to what our campus is like, to all of our athletics teams.

I can’t remember if I posted this at the time of the Wachovia. But while following Murphy competing in the Wachovia Championship, I tried to stay about half a hole ahead of him. That way I could see his shots land. Meanwhile, Murphy also had other Niner fans following along with him as he was hitting the shot. Since I was ahead of Murphy, when I didn’t move ahead, the gallery following him would be approaching me. There were people in his gallery wearing Niner gear and green clothes. There were people sitting at each hole and would watch every player come through. On 3 different occasions, while I was doing this process of following Murphy then moving ahead, I overheard people say, “Who is this? A lot of people are wearing 49er gear. Oh, this is the UNC Charlotte golfer. Well, we know it isn’t their football team.” Then other people would chuckle.

I can’t believe people find that funny. And I guess if I were to move to another city, I wouldn’t find it funny that the local school doesn’t have football. But the point was, whether I find it funny or not, it was a very clear smack in the face as to what the casual sports fan in Charlotte thinks of UNCC.

yawn...........................

do yourself a favor and just skip my posts.

The issue here is simply school pride.

When it comes to a lack of alumni donations, campus spirit and student involvement, it all comes back to pride.

And pride comes from a strong identity.

And simply, our school’s identity is terribly underdeveloped.

It could be enhanced in so many ways. Football will probably help. A name change will probably help. Better academics will probably help. A more memorable student experience with more on-campus amenities and a “Franklin St”-type development will probably help. The answer is probably a combination of a few of these. The question is simply, what will our administration choose to do?

Excellent points.

Of course, the perception created by the local paper hasn’t done **** to help. Even when we were good in basketball, our big wins were either buried on page 8. We may win the National Championship in golf, but the perception in Charlotte will be that we “got lucky”.

Between the boobsy twins (Mike and Phil), we don’t stand a chance.

If we had at least the respect we deserve in this town, it would be easier to gather support

Phil Dubois was hired to do a job: have UNCC serve the region and taxpayers as a member of the UNC system
(basically be a destination for commuter kids)…honestly I am surprised dorms were ever built, they make no sense

These issues we all gripe about will never stop until :
A) Dubois boss gives him a different M.O.
B) Dubois grows a set of testicles and goes to his boss and tells them a new outlook is much needed
oh it won’t be in your face stuff but backhanded like this:

“are yall division 1?”
“I can’t believe yall beat an ACC team”
“how is UNC doing?” (referring to Charlotte)
“I like going to games at Halton- up there at UNC”
“when is UNC gonna get football, is that woman who’s kid died still there?”
“what conference are you in now”
“wow? your RPI is 39?” (as if thats impossible)
“I’m just going to call your school UNC Jr. so we don’t get them confused”

The curent Chancellor is a non factor and a poor leader.
           ^^^^^^^ This

He is a complete and total non factor in the community and with alumni. He has pushed me further away from the university as a whole, and forced me to cut off ALL funding to any segment of campus until I am assured my University cares about it self.

The main problem I’ve seen this past year as Student Body President with UNC Charlotte is the UNC system. People like Jim Phillips who chairs the Board of Governors love UNCCH and they think the UNC system is basically just an extension of Chapel Hill.

It isn’t Dubois or even Erskine that is screwing us over.

If the UNC General Administration and Board of Governors denies us football, I will drive 49er students up to Raleigh to march on the Governor’s office.

Write letters to the BOG members, call their offices. Be eloquent in your disgust, don’t yell.

The last thing I did as president was send them a letter explaining how important 49er football is to the future of Charlotte as a region.

Here is their directory,

The "Charlotte Region". That's the key. If we can convince the Charlotte Region to get behind us, the sky's the limit.

Yeah, when one of them is Happycamper49 aka the student body president.

I think the point for many of us (atleast me) is that he isn’t screwing us over by pushing the “almighty chapel hill”, it is that we feel he screws us over by just going with the flow and not doing anything at all.

When I worked in the Alumni Call Center, it was considered an amazing feat to get someone to actually give any money over the phone. Now, granted, most people don’t want to give out their credit card numbers over the phone if they don’t have to, but the higher ups gave us some comparison numbers for other universities on the east coast and we SUCKED in comparison. Most off the people I talked to weren’t just not interested in giving money (who ever is, especially to an anonymous guy over the phone?), they weren’t interested in hearing anything about UNCC at all. About 20% of those I talked to said something to the respect of “I’m never giving money to UNCC, ever.” Again, this is not an entirely fair way of determining anything because nothing makes people less happy than someone calling them up and asking them for money, but from what I gathered, our alums were much less interested than most.

Exactly. He is keeping with the status quo which is a huge negative, but the system is still and always will be the main problem. How many people get hired to overthrow the person or organization that hires them? He’s just in a lose/lose position. Do what is necessary for Charlotte to truly be successful and it won’t get approved by the Board of Governors anyways (which something like a name change would have to be) or do the best you can inside the current system and get hated on by people that want to change the UNC system status quo.

I’m not defending Dubois, I just think that the entire situation is more complex than most people think it is. Change is far more difficult to implement when you actually sit down to plan the steps needed to make it all happen, especially when you are in a multi-layered beaurocratic system like public education in NC.

The only point I want to make is that we need to apply pressure to Dubois when the time is right, but a lot of our current agression should be channeled towards his superiors up in Chapel Hill. Constant letters, emails and communications with Board of Governor members on issues we find important will have a much greater impact than telling Dubois how much we disapprove of him.

If we get McCrory in as governor, we’ll have political pressure on both sides of the UNC General Administration coin and then if Dubois opposes a name change among other things, we’ll have a very good reason to loudly proclaim our disgust with him.

NOW THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!

NOW THATS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT!

Moral of the story for ANYBODY who wants whats best for UNC Charlotte is… vote for Pat McCrory!!!
