Just reading over a piece about Chancellor Dubois in today’s Charlotte Business Journal. Speaking to the Charlotte Chamber’s University City Area Council, the chancellor called for a boost in state funds for UNC Charlotte.
From that piece:
Dubois, a former University of Wyoming president who succeeded James Woodward this summer, said he understands the importance of UNC Chapel Hill and N.C. State to the state's health.
But he added, “That doesn’t mean that I can subscribe to the view that the world must remain as it was when the (UNC) system was created in 1965. New realities and a new economy demand more.”
In his talk, Dubois emphasized he isn't happy with UNC Charlotte's funding compared with "an unnamed UNC instititution up the road that happens to have a national championship basketball team."
The CBJ won't post the 10/21 edition on their website until next Friday, so I'll provide a link to the entire article at that time.

While he's ruffling feathers, he should be diplomatic and not burn any bridges.
What would happen, they'd push us to next to last for internal funding?
We've been there, done that. Being diplomatic under Woodward did nil for us internally. Woodward was terrific at increasing our external funding and profile across the country, but one visit to the Wake board shows that public perception in our own home territory is unacceptable. I like this guy a lot.
I’m not saying that he has burned any bridges. He was diplomatic in his statement by acknowledging the importance of UNC-CH and NCSU. I like his attitude and agree with everything posters said about Woodward but the fact of the matter is that the System and the Legislature are creatures of those schools and you can only push so far before you piss somebody off or are dismissed as a whiner and your actions become counter productive.

Mein, we’re not coming at you for saying the diplomatic thing. It’s wise thinking to go the diplomatic route. We’re just irritated because it’s been done and hasn’t worked.

I am usually for the diplomatic route myself. But in this situation we need to stir the pot. Where is the largest tax base in NC? Where is the largest Business center in NC?. Where is the largest metropolitan population in NC?
Now ask where all the money goes to the Public institutions.
Sadly, most people in Charlotte have no idea we are one of a small handful of research universities in the state and we have not even gotten the money that was allocated for research universities.
