Duke Crews - 2006

again, we dont have a scholarship to give. how would we sign this guy.

We won’t know unless he commits. One possibility is that someone could go prep and use a '09 scholarship.

Hey, we could always ask UMass what they do. It seems like every year, they sign 20 players whether they can or not.

Right now, I’m not thinking about it. I just want a good visit. One step at a time.

Bowden is pretty much our only incoming recruit that could prep, right? Given our depth at shooting guard next year, that could be difficult, unless wilderness and dewhurst developed their outside shot.

It sounds like Crews would be a great player to bring in, but it sure is frustrating to yet again have 2 transfers and 1 juco, all with 2 yrs eligibility. Crews would make yet another 2 year player. But maybe it will work out like it seems to have with mack and coley. I’d sure like to see those two develop for more than 1 year though. Life as a niners fan I suppose…

bowden just got done prep school and hated every second of it using words like ‘torture’ and ‘prison’ when he described it to me. he’d never prep dude.

He could still do one more year… I don’t think he would though and I don’t think they plan for him to. We only had 3 'ships and we filled them as soon as Spears inked his name. Unless someone wants out and we haven’t heard anything yet, then I have no idea, but I don’t see him coming unless somebody leaves, dies, or he pays his own way.

Aren’t you forgetting Rashad Coleman, Ian Andersen, and Javarris Barnett?

Meanwhile, the depth among bigs in 2009 would be Phil, Gaby, Spears, … and that’s it for the 4 and 5, so far.

I have a feeling that this thread is about to regress into a ‘Who deserves to be kicked off the team’ thread. I can’t imagine how that could possibly be a productive discussion. All that can do is just piss people off.

Let’s see what Crews does first. For all we know, Huggins may be trying to hire Crews’ uncle as an asst. coach as we speak.

Nope.

I don’t know much about Coleman yet, his press clippings sound good. And I don’t know if Barnett is ready for his newly grown size (for sg, sf, or pf?). Maybe. I like Andersen, but that’s one and hopefully he’s continued improving (just like he improved last year to this), and none of these guys get injured. Bowden is also an unknown at this point, that’s why depth is important. Do we even have an offense without a shooting guard?

I was just trying to figure out who you meant in terms of prepping, b/c Bowden was the only one who might be eligible, but I forgot he already prepped too. So what’s the point of Crews visiting? That’s the thing. I like all of our current players a bunch. I like our chemistry from last year. It seems risky to mess around with that. Maybe it’s moot if Crews goes elsewhere, but the coaches must be thinking something to have him come in for a visit. Maybe they’re going to try to get him to pay his own way?

Kick Phaler off the team. Oh, wait, darn.

Good story about how he is a team player.

I am pretty sure that Crews wouldn’t be visiting unless invited by our coaching staff, and I am pretty sure they wouldn’t be inviting unless they knew they could find a spot. I also don’t believe that we would recruit Crews without having a conversation with Coach Pearl. As long as we don’t bring a transfer in and tell him it is his team (D. Alexander) then I am feeling okay about this.

Can you imagine the confusion amongst readers when the Observer headline said “Duke scores 30 in last night’s game”? Okay, now I am dreaming. Sorry.

I just checked out Pitt’s scholarship situation. It’s a doozy.
Diggs said the split from Pitt was not amicable. He had wanted to remain with the team, but the coaches repeatedly encouraged him to transfer. After a while, he relented and decided to leave because it became obvious he was not wanted.

“They basically wanted me to leave because they wanted to sign someone else,” Diggs said.

Diggs, a Williamsport, Pa., native, went on to say the Pitt coaches were “manipulators” because they made it seem like he would receive more playing time during the recruiting process.
http://www.pittblather.com/2008/04/22/no-one-diggs-it/

Kicking Diggs off the team gave Pitt 3 scholarships instead of the 2 scholarships that Pitt originally had for '08.

But Pitt signed 4 players to Letters of Intent (Ashton Gibbs, Travon Woodall, Nasir Robinson, Dwight Miller). Duke Crews would be #5. JUCO Darnell Dodson to Pitt is also said to be “a done deal” and Pitt has been trying to bring aboard Dodson’s teammate William Coleman as well.

2 schollies. Unbelievable.

so in other words, they cant sign him either.

so in other words, they cant sign him either.

They probably will … based on their track record.

If they can sign 6 players with only 2 scholarships, why not sign a 7th?

I’m not exactly sure what his “issues” were at UT, but this guy would be a definite upgrade to what we have now. He looks like a solid second year SEC player to me,… good defender and a guy who can produce on offense against top notch competition. Hope we get him.

Jim, nice write up Thanks for addressing both the scholarship situation and his standing at UT.

Neither Charlotte nor Pittsburgh has an available scholarship at the moment. In either case, Crews would likely have to pay his way the first season, which he would have to sit out anyway under NCAA rules.

Having to pay his own way would cost him about 23k at Pittsburgh for tuition and fees, and 14.6k at Charlotte.

That is a little misleading, both schools would make sure he got plenty of financial aid.

It’s a decision between the city of Charlotte and the city of Pittsburgh. Not that difficult of a decision.

If anjuan doesn’t make it professionally anywhere, please sign him as an assistant coach, the kid knows everyone it seems, could be one heck of a recruiter.

Leemire Goldwire — once he’s done making his money professionally. Can you imagine? Threre was a blurb about how he volunteered to give a lecture in front of a group of high school recruits about making right decisions for college. And he described how Charlotte was the right decision for him. The guy running the camp said Lee did an awesome job.

About Duke Crews - how sad is it that this kid practically has to pull out his transcripts and permanent record for an interview? I’m really glad that Jim called out the Tennessee media — I’m starting to realize where ‘Memphidiots’ get it from. Something about this whole situation didn’t feel kosher at all to me from the start. Why would his coach praise Crews for improving his behavior & for maintaining his academics if he was booted from the team? Why would a ‘cancer’ have articles about how he treats his teammates well and plays hard?

Crews gets such a bum rap that it ain’t even funny. I had a hunch that a lot of what I was reading on him was nothing more than a big pile of horse crap.

I remember looking at Crews’ mugshot on Rivals.com and thinking, 'This guy’s mugshot looks like an actual mugshot. He looks like one of the meanest, most unsavory characters I’ve ever seen.'

yeah, and Tyree Evans looked like a charming young man — so what? Crews “looks” like an unsavory character so that means he has to be one.

"It turned out you can take the boy out of Hampton, Va., but you can’t take Hampton out of the boy.

Could you imagine someone saying about Leemire: “You can’t take the Palm Beach, FL out of the boy”?

Look, I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t disappointed when I heard about Crews. ...He looked like it genuinely made him happy to be a member of the Vols when he returned and sparked us during a midseason stretch where UT outrebounded something like seven consecutive opponents upon his return. ... All that, and he wasn’t playing at 100 percent. I was very excited to see his ceiling and see if he could live up to the expectations a five-star brings.

… I wish Duke the best. But much like former Vols running back LaMarcus Coker, they’re going to go down as players with all the potential in the world, all the excitement and possibility bottled up in their bodies. And all of it either went up in a cloud of weed smoke or stayed asleep with them during all the 8 a.m. classes they skipped.

It’s simply hard for me to be sad to see them go.

Yep, you’re an idiot.

I don’t blame Crews at all for transferring. A change of scenery might do him a world of good.
