Duke Crews - 2006

I know you don’t yank scholarships. But it would be a breath of fresh air if a player realized what could happen if they volunteered that. I know that doesn’t happen, and that it won’t. But it would be great to see IMHO

you don’t yank scholarships. They are a 4 yr deal, as long as your grades keep up.

you can run players off like last year, but NOBODY from our current squad deserves that to “open a spot up”[/QUOTE]

Being a former college athlete I thought you would know that athletic scholarships are only a one year agreement to be renewed after each academic year. If Lutz wanted to use one of the scholarships for Crews, someone would take a redshirt, transfer or pay their own way.

This is indeed a shady tactic when coaches either ask a player to pay their own way or are asked to transfer, but it happens all the time. Would Crews contribute more than say Dewhurst, not for us to decide?

I agree, I wasn’t saying we should do it. I was just trying to understand where this magical scholarship was going to come from.

from a “technical standpoint” they may get renewed upstairs, but when you sign on the dotted line, the U gaurantees you 4 years man. Like I said, the only way to “lose” your scholarship is to flunk out. Athletic performance can NEVER be a factor.

A coach can make your life miserable though and make you want to go.

Wilderness signed with Charlotte in October 2005 to play for the '06-'07 season. He would have riden the pine behind De’Angelo along with Jamison and a couple others.

So instead, he became a freshman starter this year and has 3 eagerly anticipated years yet to go.

Something to think about.

We will have to watch this team carefully this year. I have thought all along we might have one or two guys that could be getting more time somewhere else. The talent level seems to be pretty even all across the front line.

our team could be absolutely deadly next season if phil and gaby can mature into dominant post presences. the guards of the A10 wouldn’t know what to do with themselves.

Can Crews still prep a year?

As I have written before, I am a Tennessee grad but first and foremost a Niner basketball fan. I have watched a lot of Duke Crews, and the guy is flat out electrifying. If anything, he will bring a serious spark to this team. He is full of energy and fun to watch. I kind of compare him to pre-knee injury Versile Shaw. His numbers don’t make your eyes pop out, but he was sharing time with some talented players at UT, and especially at the same position and same year as Wayne Chism. I am very excited if this thing works out.

Of course not! He’s a freakin’ college junior in good academic standing.

so why is goodman from fox sports assuming he will end up here if we dont have a scholarship to give him. the more i read about this guy the more i like him.

One important thing that I believe Crews could add to the team is more toughness. I still feel that some of our interior guys are too much finesse, and not enough blood and grit. They need to stop trying to avoid contact (doing reverse layups, high arching shots, double clutching shots), and start trying to slam the ball down someone’s throat and leave the opponents broken arms hanging on the basket. Sorry if I was a little gruesome in my descriptions, but I am tired of seeing guys in the paint nowadays being finesse guys that want to be guards. Crews is a hard-nose guy that will do the dirty work necessary to win.

I watched many of their games, He came in when Pearl came to Tenn, he played a lot at first and then later just did not fit in the style of play as the Pearl system got more established. He would really be better off in a half court style of team. At the end, I would say it was a bball sytle issue.

He looks a lot like barkley physically, I guess in terms of niners game, most similar to withers, very good rebounder. His offense is around the basket, with power. He would fit in well with our type of play.

We are definitely not a halfcourt oriented team.

unh ?, we are a methodical half court team, we run a half court set every time down the floor. Running and fast breaking is not our thing.

Are you being sarcastic? Or do you have us confused with Richmond?

Neither is Tennessee

We are trying to run more fast breaks, but we are far from centered around just being that as a team. Our team runs when they can, but it is not their first option. God knows a bit of a bruiser with the ability to get up and down the court would be a huge help here.

if we dont have a scholarship to give him is this even a discussion?

Crews said that he is going to visit Charlotte and that he is going to visit Pittsburgh. He will commit to one of those two schools. May he have a GREAT visit to Charlotte.

If he decides that he wants to attend Pittsburgh, God bless him. Charlotte’s roster will remain strong and personnel will be a non-issue.

If he decides that he wants to attend Charlotte, then we have the best problem we can possibly have: too much talent. It is certainly possible that Crews will be another power forward that Charlotte will send to the NBA. That’s an exciting possibility.
