EVH Memorial Thread for All Things Music 🎶

Interesting that The Damned’s Brian James and Van Halen had something in common - both toured with metal icons Black Sabbath.

Gotta give credit where due. Not only does Mean Joe have a keen eye for QB talent he is also a music/guitar aficionado of the highest order

Dedicating this one to our Niners basketball program. It to is has been fallin so long, it’s like gravity is gone, and we are floating.

So which era of DBT is the best? Who is the best songwriter?

Hinds only 51 but his Wiki page now lists him as a “retired musician” so not sure if this could be health related.

Who remembers George Clinton at Lollapalooza in 1994? “We’re all MotherF_ckers!”?

Another now grumpy old musician. Ugh! :winking_face_with_tongue:

I agree with him.

I will admit that I have never really been a Dylan fan so what he says - then or now - doesn’t resonate with me. Ditto Gene Simmons and the others who lament about the supposed good old days.

OK, I have listened to it several times and Bob does make some good points. He was fortunate that he was eventually able to do whatever he wanted. That’s something I always appreciated about Neil Young. Record company would want a certain thing - usually a rehash of a cash cow - only to have Neil decide to explore his rockabilly side for example!

Did you watch A Complete Unknown, Run?

Thought it was good, not great, but it explored Dylan getting to do what he wanted.

I’m not the biggest Dylan fan (my Dad loves his stuff), but I enjoyed that. And the point he is making about the soul being sucked out of music by money grubbing corporate types is not a new point. But it has reached endgame status, and honestly, did quite a while ago. The whole industry has virtually stagnated into a bunch of corporate engineered auto tuned processed cheese product just intended to make money.

Its so hard to make music thats honest, has any staying power, and therefore matters anymore (forget messaging - just making timeless quality music, or take any risks). I applaud anyone who manages to break through the system these days and do it.

There’s almost nothing anymore that ever feels like it’s so urgent and vital that you cannot miss it. Nothing that approaches a cultural touchstone. It’s all just mindless safe writing and overproduction. A big part of the intoxification of music growing up was being in that moment, feeling that something big, something vital was happening when you listened. That has gone away almost entirely. I feel sad for my kids not getting to experience that. I like hearing my dad talk to them about listening to Dylan and all the artists of his day and how much it felt like “the times are a changin…” They have zero similar experiences like that.

I’m not so sure that’s correct NA. There is a lot of stuff going on in this country right now that they very well may have to deal with in similar manners than the past. Blame whomever your side blames but the country is not healthy right now.

As far as Dylan bagging on todays music, just another old man saying get off my lawn. I don’t like it either but my dad didn’t much care for the music I liked when I was younger.
