Favorite Musical Artists
Speaking of that, has anyone seen Nelli Furtado’s new song/video? I caught about 2 minutes of it the other day. Garbage.
I like it compared to that stupid “Fly like a bird” song. Ugh, that crap was awful, but I agree she’s not doing anything original now.

1- Prince
2- U2
3- King’s X
4- The Time
5- George Clinton and P-Funk (or any other the incarnations of the funk mob)

The rest (in no particular order)

MeShell Ndegeocello
INXS
The Black Crowes
The Roots
The Brand New Heavies
The Fugees
Y&T (hair metal at it’s finest)
Alice in Chains
Digital Underground

That bird song was one of her worst. She had a couple of decent songs on that CD.

I just hate MTV though. Hate what it does to artists with potential and ones that did something at one time. The whole business blows ass now.

On a serious note, for any of you that only listen to MTV, the radio, and classic stuff, you’re really missing out on whats been going on for over a decade. MTV and the radio play pure garbage. I’m sorry, 95% of that stuff is just abolsute shlock. There was some great music in the 60’s & 70’s, but don’t limit yourself to the classics. Since the mid 90’s, just about every decent record has been buried off the airwaves because of MTV, Clearchannel & the big labels. In the past 10 years, there has been some incredibly good music made, but way too many people have never heard any of it or only bits and pieces, from a movie soundtrack, a commercial, or that one song that penetrated the heavily edited corporate playlists. You’re denying your ears the best stuff if you don’t make an effort to find the real, enduring music of this generation - the stuff people will actually listen to in 20 years and not the disposable trash they play on MTV. Do you really think that Emo band is the vangaurd? Seriously? I don’t wanna be mean, but they suck. Trust me. They’re a weak version of someone else with some serious weight & staying power.

If you wanna test me on it, toss out one of your favorites - I’ll try my best to steer you to somethin you’ll like better, in time. For instance, if I hear one more bright, intelligent, (cute) girl tell me that Jack Johnson is good, I’m gonna cry. He isn’t that bad, he’s just monotonous and he doesn’t challenge you. If you wanna hear something similar, but better, listen to Jose Gonzalez (an up and comer). And for godsakes, dont listen to that turdball who sings that wretched “you’re beautiful” song. :scared:

Yeah, that video is horrific. She may be the worst dancer I’ve ever seen in my life.

Speaking of terrible videos, the Paris Hilton one (no, the music video  ) is terrible. And I wasn’t aware that the music for that song is a COMPLETE ripoff of an old UB40 song. They were comparing the two this morning on the radio and there is virtually no difference whatsoever. And of course, Paris is denying that it derived from that. I also heard that they did like 3 layers of voice manipulation for her on that song to get it to sound good. Good luck touring, Paris.

NA, I agree with some of what you said about MTV, over-commercialization, and bad music being out there but those are just our opinions. There are plenty of people out there who listen to it, so while it may be garbage to us, it obviously isn’t to everybody. Everyone has different tastes. For example, I like a wide range of music (including Jack Johnson) but Elliot Smith does nothing for me. I’m not sure exactly what you mean by Jack Johnson not challenging you, but if you are talking about the simplicity of the music I think that is why I like it so much.

NA, but Jack Johnson is good!

but Elliot Smith does nothing for me.
Oooh...them is fightin' words for NA :hammer:
Oooh…them is fightin’ words for NA :hammer:
I think what NA is trying to say is that MTV and Clearchannel have so much control over what people are exposed to that they have no idea there is a whole world of musical artists out there making incredible music. The problem with people is they are very lazy. Rather than go out and seek music, that take what is given to them.

I think it is just very frustrating for those of us that do seek out underexposed music, to see people get major exposure and air play, less because the are the most talented and more because a major label decides this is what the public should be spoon fed. In a perfect world everyone gets exposure and the public gets exposed to it all and then decides for themselves.

As far a calling any artist garbage I think that is a mistake. You might not care for their type of music or think they suck, but plenty of people think your favorite artist sucks too. It is all subjective, I prefer just to say I don’t care for a artist, then you don’t have worry about pissing peole off and looking like a jackass.

For anyone who likes some of the bands on my list and may not be familiar with others on my list, send me a email and I would be happy to send you a mix CD.

Exactly, Jimmy! People with strong opinions about music sometimes don’t understand that what they believe is crap is based on their opinion, not a fact. I don’t mind if you say you don’t care for a band that I like, but if you say it’s crap, you better be prepared to defend the bands that you think are good.

LOL.

Naw, I’m perfectly okay with people not liking what I like. I have weird tastes.

FWIW, I don’t think Jack Johnson is garbage. I just think his songs all sound the same. (I do own two of his albums that I listen to a lot). He’s okay, he just doesn’t challenge me to invest anything in his songs. There are a lot of other stripped down acoustic types that play on the same mellow vibe but leave you feeling a little fuller than $5 at taco bell.

At least you guys didn’t get worked about that James Blunt guy. BLECH!

And to clarifiy the garbage comment - I think it’s “garbage” for an artist (whether or not I like them) to forego their talent and vision in an effort to be a hitmaker. In the same way I would think it’s garbage for Leemire to ballpunch a defender to get a clean shot off. Capeche?

I did call most of what MTV plays shlock. I stand behind that. Most of it is either written by a bunch of fat white guys on Pro Tools and then packaged with the teen queen or king du jour, OR is mediocre trend pop by 25 year olds dressed in kiddie clothes with bad haircuts. I just dont see anything that fits that description having any staying power?

No, I included them. I had a black pair of Reeboks at one time, and of course my soccer cleats. That was about it for the black clothing. I didnt hangout with the goth kids.

And you’re picking on my list? Good lord.

I miss the old Napster for finding obscure music that I would never be exposed to otherwise. I could care less about the downloading music forfree. I’ll pay for what I like. It was being able to scan through other people’s Napster directory that made it great.

I would do a search on an obscure song that I like (ex. Lazy by Deep Purple). When I found someone who had Lazy, I could scan through their music files and see what kind of similar music they have. On searching for Lazy, I came across a cover of Hendrix’s Little Wing by Stevie Ray Vaughan that I like better than the original.

I would also notice that certain songs that I wasn’t familiar with were turning up all over the place (i.e. Final Countdown by Europe, The Horse by Cliff Noble & Co., Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson, Miami 2017 by Billy Joel {awesome song by the way}, etc.) I’d download them and say “Oh, man, I know that song!”
