FD postgame transcript from NinerReport

I know that is just the coaches poll, but margins count in mid season polls and on selection sunday they can serve as a tie breaker.

There really is no evidence that they serve as tie breakers. Thats what the RPI, SOS, W/L record, last 10 games played are all for.

Its silly to think, that after Cuse gets left out of the NCAA’s last year, the selection committee gives a reason like “Well, we really like Syracuse. The had a nice RPI and W/L record. I just feel like they should have beat Podunk U by…um…lets say…at least 10 points. Yea…they should beat teams like that by at least 10 points. They do that and they would be dancing”

I’m telling you, no body really cares (or should care for that matter) about margins of victory.

I know this is leading off topic of the thread, but I am appauled that a 4-6 team would recieve a vote. I don't care who they played close. They need to beat at the very least two of those teams to justify that action.

NC State is 32 in the coaches poll with a home loss to New Orleans, a 1 point win over Davidson, a loss to ECU and a 23 point loss to Mich St.

don’t you know that margin of victory doesn’t mean anything? :lmao:

Hmmm, I guess I ended up walking around in circles in that one… :hammer:

Davidson loss to Maryland last year in NCAA
Davdison lost to UNC close
Davidson lost to Duke close

So you think if Davidson lost those games by 25, they would of recieved the amount of pub they got??? You can’t have it both ways.

scores matter

If they dont win the SOCON, they dont dance. I can promise you that the selection committee won’t take their 4 point loss the the Tar Heels into consideration when leaving them out of the field of 64.

Scores dont matter.
I understand your premise in general. I was not happy with a close game against FD either. And, like you mentioned earlier, a 1 point win may not affect your seeding but it can be used a barometer for the team overall. But on the other hand UNC CH only beat Davidson by 4, Duke beat them by 6, NC State beat them by 1, while we beat them by 7.
Best post in either FD thread by far…why even play the games since we all know who’s going to win and by how much. No wonder we have the sportsbook playground for adults…

here is a spot on article today from Yahoo sports:

USC blowing out Illinois might sway some opinions :shades:

I am sure if they won by 1, this article would of been written :smirk:

So this ridiculous thread and others like it are still going…

I’ve yet to see one person who was happy with the F-D score. They may have been happy we won, and understanding that a new team turned in a poor offensive effort, but no one was happy about the offensive performance.

This is beyond beating the dead horse. Stop manufacturing false premises to argue.

What are we even talking about now? Are we talking about college football or basketball?

As I said earlier, I am fully aware that college football used to rely on margin of victory to determine BCS ranking. They did away with that bit in the formula because, well, its just a stupid way of looking at things and really tells you nothing about the value of a team. Issues like “margin of victory” is exactly why college football is so screwed up.

Not the case with college ball, thank God. But if you can find me an example of a time when the margin of victory was used to determine if a team got into the dance or not, I will concede the point to you.

I stated above I don’t think margin of victory in December matters toward the dance (we agree), but margin of victory is important in terms of perception, whether its hoops or football all year long.

Davidson was a great example in hoops this year. They were 0-5 vs top 100 teams last year, and lost a bunch of good games this year and were media darlings - ONLY BECAUSE THEY PLAYED GOOD TEAMS TIGHT AND LOST. No W’s but the score made them appear quality. You can’t deny that.

bottom line: beating FD by 6 made alot of coaches, voters, and media scratch their head at our squad. FD had no biz on the floor and it (for this week) set our reputation back a notch, but an ACC victory could restore that Saturday.

Ditto for Sothern Illinois in the Valley and perhaps even Gonzaga in the WCC. Neither has played up to expectations this season, though the latter does have a decent RPI of #24 at the moment.
