Fire Alan Major

Very possible when you look at from a retaining season ticket holders standpoint but I guess depends on how much faith each season ticket holder has in Judy to hire the next head coach. If you are going to fire Major, you will have to do the same with Judy if you truly want to “refurbish” the fanbase.

Nobody is buying tickets immediately if it is another no name hire. It would take a couple winning seasons (maybe an NCAA) to win back trust.

Not true…I dropped season tickets this year after almost 20 straight seasons and I will GUARANTEE you that I will buy season tickets again if Major is let go this off-season, regardless of who the replacement is.
You gave up all those 49er club points? Ouuuuuuch. Isn’t that cutting off your nose to spite your face? I’d have at least bought one cheapo family zone type ticket.
I bought one season ticket the last 2 years prior. I was still an upper-decker and I have FSLs and donations I still make. The only “loss” I suffer (that I care about) is seating priority in Halton if/when I buy again. Considering our shrinking season ticket pool, not much to lose there.

To me 49er Club points don’t really carry that much weight after your football seats got locked in. My donation level is now soley based on keeping my football seats and tailgating spot.
This.

I am naturally optimistic about the Niners. Even when it makes absolutely no sense to be. I think that is why I never got on the Fire Lutz bandwagon until it was over, and then I had to admit that it needed to happen. With Major I have been as optimistic as possible. I knew that our budget mandated that we hire a “take a chance” kind of guy, but that has always been our approach. Sometimes we won - Mullins, Watkins, and even Lutz for a lot of years. Sometimes we lost - Pratt and Wissel. I haven’t been sure which bucket to put Major into.

I like that he has recruited bigger players. I like that he has recruited the Charlotte area. I like that his team has more discipline on and off the court than the 4 years before him. I knew that upgrading our talent was going to take a few years, with incremental gains, and I was willing to do that. What I cannot get past is when we are up 11 at the half, and then the other team comes out to begin a 17-2 run I don’t see the Coach making adjustments. If we were Duke it would make sense to stay steady and keep doing what we do, but we aren’t. We do not have a record of that working, just the opposite in fact. I want to see adjustments. Even if it doesn’t work I will be able to tell that we are trying. I bet the team wants him to make adjustments too, because when it isn’t working they need leadership.

I have come to the conclusion that Major is not the complete package that we need him to be. His strengths are real, as are his weaknesses. As nice as it would be to replace him with a coach that is a real game changer, I think the only way that happens is if we take a chance and get lucky this time. We all want a proven winner, with personality and recruiting skills but I just don’t think we have the money to hire that guy. We are going to have to try and find someone that becomes that guy. The thing that scares me most about where we find ourselves is the next guy could be worse. We have been there before.

I guess I am going to put my optimism in a box and join the Fire Major crowd, but I am realistic enough to know that we are not going to get Bruce Pearl, or Gregg Marshall, or probably anyone else I have ever heard of. Letting Major go is to accept the roll of the dice. Of course if we win 4 of the next 5 I reserve the right to be optimistic going into the conference tournament.

Well said Nugget.

That 17-2 run started before the end of the first half.

Our offense looked good for the first half of the first half. Our guys were moving and making pretty good passes and decisions. Then the offense completely changed and we fell apart. I actually commented to my dad during the early parts of the game that our offense looked a lot more crisp and active than I’d seen it most of the year.

A good coach doesn’t let you lapse into the shit we had to watch the second half of the game for extended periods of time. A good coach calls a timeout and gets things back on track. We call timeouts and look just as bad as ever afterwards.

Right you are N_N, it was 36-32 Marshall at the half. We led by 11, 30-19, with 7:51 left in the first half. My disatisfaction with our lack of game-time adjustments stands.

The mantra we cant afford better than Major…

Raise the self esteem folks. $500k is a nice starting salary. This can be 1m job if you come in here and do what Shaka Smart did. Sell some seats, sell some corp accts, win some games and not rebuild. And its very possible in this town.

My assumption is the salary has to come before the wins which lead to more donations and better attendance. If that is the case, the money we have to work with today is probably going to be about the same we are paying Major. Now if we are moving money around, and some of the $11+ million in football naming rights can be tapped it would be a whole different story. I just don’t know if we can do that.

100% disagree. Major type money can land a young great coach. Let him “build” his income.

If we can do that great. Much of the wish list here seems to start at twice that. I know we have another thread for possible coaches, and it would be nice to see how much they each make now. If we assume the hire must be made with $550,000/yr it will give us a more realistic picture I think.

Shaka Smart rode two prior coaches who were highly successful. As someone from the area and currently living in Richmond, please don’t paint him as the guy who won over ticket holders, local corporations, etc. He’s maintained and possibly added a few, but he didn’t build it from the ground up, he jumped on at the 4th floor and made it a 6 story building.

Who is the 3rd? Grant took them to the NCAA’s for the first time since the 80’s I thought.

Capel absolutely.
