Fire Ron Sanchez

Yes, and when PEOPLE hire someone they also almost always claim ā€œmultiple other people wanted him, but we got himā€.

I don’t remember reading about any other than rumor and innuendo.

I trust the boosters it came from.

yes, but who did they hear it from?

I think Odom is the coaching hire we missed out on.

I bet we were the highest profile job Sanchez was offered.

If true, those ā€œother schoolsā€ are very happy we got Sanchez

Jmu was one. They offered a year before we did

Fancher, if given time, would have been more sucessfull than Major, Price, Ron also.

As an ECU alum, I’ve said it before on this thread but I have a lot of sympathy for how you guys are feeling about your basketball program because I felt that way about our football program when we fired Ruffin and hired Scottie. Our AD at the time went with the cheapest option and we paid dearly for it. At the time when Scottie was hired, I thought the overall success of our program would keep us in a good spot irrespective of the investment we were making in our program, and I was dead wrong. We fell so far off a Cliff I honestly never thought we’d recover, but we ate some serious humble pie and realized we couldn’t just rely on our perception of our programs past success to generate future returns.

I think there needs to be an honest reflection about the level of investment that’s being put into your basketball program at the moment. I’m not here to argue basketball success because I’m very aware your basketball program overall has achieved far more than ours has, but at the moment we invest more dollar for dollar in our basketball program than Charlotte does at the moment. Schwartz is out pacing Sanchez in salary and that’s in an area with a lower cost of living. We also set up our NIL to pay several of our players 10k annually and it’s kept our young core together and we managed to land Bobby pettiford in the transfer portal who was the 4th ranked NC recruit in the 2021 class. When you guys fire Sanchez at the end of this coming season Mike Hill cannot afford to make another cheap hire. Spending money doesn’t always equal success, but playing it conservatively significantly lowers the chances of future success. I had to sit through six years of missing out on a bowl game in football, I feel for y’all and I’m sorry you’re stuck in a near 20 year drought at the moment. Hopefully Poggi gets you guys rolling in football and your next basketball hire turns things around because I’m really looking forward to having an in state rival in the AAC.

Solid points. Good post.

This is where we’ve arrived at… An ECU fan making more sense of the situation than most if not all of us.

Excellent points all around.

The sad truth is we are also in a support death spiral… The lack of investment is driving worse results, which is running off donors and not creating new fans, which is further reducing our ability to invest and so on.

At some point we need a break through in our revenue sports to create some buzz in the program and enable the investment that we need to make. And then we need to spend the money responsibly and not miss on new hires.

Right now, I believe Mike Hill is throwing what little budget flexibility we have at football. I think that is 90% of the reason Sanchez is still here.

So what I’m hearing is when Poggi takes our nationally ranked team to a bowl game/playoffs next year we will gain more support from donors. We will then funnel some of that money to basketball. This will be the impetus to fire Sanchez, hire a great coach, recruit better, and back to national relevance the next year.

Since these are the boosters that typically pay the buyouts I’d think they were directly involved.

Not sure how that means they know what other schools were or were not truly ā€œafter Ronā€, but ok.

clt has diverted mbb contributions to golf, softball, and baseball

I think the main reason we didn’t see Ron get moved this year is because of the confrence switch and football coaching change. I’m not saying it was the best descision, but moving confrences and changing both revenue sports in the same athletic year cost money and could be a disaster.

This was the safe move for Mike and I’m sure he was hoping Ron could retain his core players which he didn’t. At this point it is what it is. I’ll be in Halton next season pulling for our guys regardless of whos coaching. I’ll outlive Sanchez the same way I did for Price and Major.

I mean they were probably involved with what they would contribute to contract and contact with agent. Sure could have been blowing smoke but at that level of college admin folks talk.
