Bingo! Man, for Sanchez to indicate the blowout was because HIS players lacked Heart, so early in the season, with so many new players, and with Sanchez losing most all his previous games with many different playersā¦I am still floored that a Niner Coach would say such an inflammatory insult about the players HE signed and coached. I will state it again, backwards this time: WOW
I will take it a step further. I challenge Mike Hill to censure Sanchez for this
I didnāt like the guy the first game I saw him coach. It was easy for anybody that knows the game to see that the offensive system was crap from jump street.
I too am flabbergasted by the heart comment. Seems like a great way to lose your team.
I have not seen every minute of basketball this year by any means but what Iāve seems shows the players do care and are putting the effort in.
And can we please get Marvin Cannon a start on Saturday?
Can we please give Garcia a little more time?
Have some faith in these guys coaching staff and give opportunity and reward excellent performances and effort.
Note - Khalifa is a go getter who cares (not the only one by any means!). I see great effort and attitude from the guy. Iām watching him. If he loses faith in this staff then I think we are in for a long painful season.
Some coaches like huggie bear can get away with saying his team lacked heart and they play better/harder. Ron saying this could hurt the teamās feelings and he loses them. Funny, that. Hunh?
Khalifa, if he progresses, could become an absolute force, even in the AAC. I have to remind myself that he is just a freshman. He is one of the few silver linings this season.
As I was observing on some other good teams, having a talented big man like he projects to be with further development (along with a strong lead guard), is pretty much enough to distinguish yourself from hordes or mediocrity. We have the chess pieces. We just have to use them correctly.
I believe the kid Lee on Davidson who torched us also came out of the NBA Global academy system like Khalifa. Letās go get some more of those guys, lol
To paraphrase what Sanchez said: We have to guard better one-on-one. Not a system thing, but a heart thing. True that one-to-one defense is not a system thing. Either you guard your man effectively or you donāt. Iād have probably used āeffortā instead of āheartā.
Coaches need to put players in a position to succeed. Iād say in my own uneducated way that against Davidson we didnāt lack effort, but that Ron and staff failed to come up with a scheme to stop or even slow down Lee.
Is it just me or does it seem like he has already lost this team? I guess there is still time to turn it around but the last two games have looked an awful lot like last season. If we get halfway thru the season and it still looks like this I would send Ron home and let Fearne or Kimble coach the team. We have to pay him either way so why not see if one of the assistants can do a better job with him out of the picture.
I tried to start out this season with an open mind and hope that Sanchez wasnāt the problem last season. I probably shouldnāt already be jumping to this conclusion but it sure looks like the same old shitty play with a very different cast of characters. The one common denominator is pretty clear.
We 100% lacked effort for alot of the game. I was furious at the no shits given attitude on defense. We have to do better with that. That being said, Ron is a tremendous person, but just isnāt head coach material at this level. We should move on after this year.
Iād really love to see us make adjustments to the team we were playing. I donāt think itās even debatable that we were the more athletic team. How about adjusting your ārun back to get on defenseā philosophy some and let your guys fight for offensive rebounds and try to use your advantage to⦠your advantage. Even my wife was railing on Sanchez when a lone Davidson player grabbed one of our rebounds because our whole team was running back on defense.
We never gave them much pressure outside of the set defense area, we should have been switching up a bit to try to force some mistakes and then really trying to bang in some second chance points on offense. This is especially true when your team is more athletic, and you KNOW coming in that the other team is an incredibly high efficiency team with some screaming hot shooters.
Instead, it looked like a HS basketball coach trying to rigidly mimic a limited understanding of the pack line defense and focusing on running back to do the same thing every time.
Game preparation means being prepared for your opponent. We donāt ever do that because we always do exactly the same thing.
I say Mike should secretly hire his replacement this month, then fire Sanchez. Mike should have that guys number, preferably a Gator/SEC connection. Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead. Let the new coach have this team for the last part of the season, and get his choice assistants on the recruiting trail. Consider the $millions lost as an investment in Mike Hillās education and the standard cost of doing business these days. Better to change to fresh live bait then to continue to soak a dead minnow any longer
Hill has a just in case list of coaches for any sport really (esp the two main ones)ā¦guarantee it. Just in case a coach gets hired away or itās time to let them go.
He is still on the staff in a non coaching position as far as I know. If there were suddenly an opening on the coaching staff he could probably move into a coaching position if heās interested.
In the movie dream world of Niner basketball⦠Dinkins becomes head coach, Lutz comes back as associate head coach to help, and Kummer and Demarco as assistants. We ascend into basketball greatness and go back to the final four in 2027 on the 50th anniversary of our first trip there.
