Football Coach Candidates?

great recruiting can help fix a lot of issues quickly but culture plays a huge part too. Iā€™m positive that the reason sanchez got the extension that he did was because hill saw that our basketball culture took a huge nose dive after lutz got canned and it needed a major overhaul. weā€™ve lost for so long in basketball that its seen as a perennial loser and it might make great recruits hesitant in taking risks on us compared to other programs. so Sanchez was brought in to establish that culture again by improving the recruiting here but also to establish confidence that this is a program you can come to win. so far it hasnā€™t worked yet.

of course the question then is if you plan to do something like that do you want to go with a coach thats young and up coming or do you want a vet that has done it before? I think basketball could be a 5 year rebuild with the right coach. but football could be a 10+ year build to establish that this is a program that means business. and if thats the case we might need a coach in football that has done it before in the G5 level that and has seen what P5 football is like that is willing to to take this kind of job. I dont think football at this time should really want someone that will see this job as a place where they can show themselves off for 3-4 years before they leave for a bigger job. we probably need someone like a frost or statterfield who has already gotten their P5 pay day and is will willing to hang out at a program like ours for ten+ years to try a get this football program built properly.

anyway I hope healy can still turn it around because I like the guy. if he fails and gets let go though I feel like we need to go with a vet next time in football.

The next coaches in basketball and football need to have a track record of getting it done.

And donā€™t be afraid to hire older individuals with a good rep. Experience matters. Contacts matter. Gravitas matters.

Luke Kuechly Hello GIF by Carolina Panthers

Iā€™d want kuechly some where on staff but not the HC job. Not sure if Iā€™d even give him the DC job at this point. But I guess having him as DC should help recruiting at least and we suck so what the heck. I want good quality coaching experience at this point.

Interesting - USF going though something similar to us with their own super young coach: Jeff Scott.

Scott was a WR at Clemson form 2000-02, and his coaching experience is very limitedā€¦ Mainly WR coach at Clemson.

They have former players more than hinting at dissatisfaction:

Just to be clear though, Iā€™d prefer Satterfield. Much better resume.

I think I might prefer frost. He won in the league we are going to and he elevated the program in a way that we want. And he did it at a large public university in a urban setting that didnā€™t have a long track record of success.

Satterfield is solid no doubt, wouldnā€™t be upset with him at all, but he walked into a different setting in Boone.

Iā€™m not keen on Frost. He has lost an unbelievable amount of one score games at Nebraska. That makes question his decision making ability. Also, it is easier to recruit talent inside and to Florida than to North Carolina.

He was only at UCF 2 years and has only ever had 1 good season. He seems closer to a Healy type hire.

Compare that to Satterfield:

Satterfield, Justin Fuente and Tom Herman would all be tier one candidates for me. Give Bronco Mendenhall a call as well and see if he wants to get back into coaching.

We need stability, a couple seasons of winning 7-9 games would be a good step for the program.

Frost has proven to be a major league donkey - absolutely not.

I was surprised to read that Frost isnā€™t playing his 1s (Off & Def) against each other in practice.

Another perhaps less appealing option is snooping around the Saban rehabilitation program, as I think someone posted previously.

The program has its lowest enrollment in a while as it looks like the only current patient is former Houston Texans and Penn State HC Bill Oā€™Brien.

His other coordinators are currently a guy (Wiggins) that previously followed Fuentes from Memphis to VA Tech, and the former UTSA DC (Golding) through 2017. These guys are on more traditional tracks.

I was halfway kidding about ā€œPrimeTimeā€, but he is winning and he is recruiting. I guarantee a lot of good players would want to play for him. I really like Mike London and always have. He didnā€™t do so well at UVA but he can recruit and he just kicked our butts.

No Luke as HC though. He can get a spot on the defensive staff and work his way up.

I have been thinking about Bronco Mendenhall today.

Agreed. No more gimmick hires. Period. I want no Mark Price version of a football coach.

Sanders would be a legitimate hire if he has another successful season this year.

Something tells me he will go straight to the P5 though.

clt says Luke would be prepared.
