Football Coach Candidates?

Garrett Riley (IMHO) wouldn’t be as much of a gamble as was Healy. Here’s why: Riley comes from an actual coaching pedigree where he has been around success and has seen the process. What did Healy come from? He landed in a couple places and took a job (AP) that no one else really wanted. Also ask yourself did his success come off of the heels of the previous coaches recruiting efforts? Because that is exactly, and ONLY, the reason he started out successful here. Left to his own efforts, he bombed. So you take a person like the younger Riley who has a lot of reach across the South and Mid West, has been mentored by some of the top people in FBS football, and put him in our situation and you have the recipe for a winner.

Those of you who thought a 4-0 Rosso was worth an interview…he’s not going to make it to the phone screening portion based on the early portion of today’s game.

A 4-0 Rosso WOULD have earned ab interview

Mike Hill should have a little chat with Tyson Helton while he is on campus today.

As of halftime, I’ve got 35 reasons why it’s a moot point

Not what you said…at 4-0 yes an interview. Agree, no way this happens so it now becomes moot

Recruiting was supposed to be a strength for Healy but his recruiting has left this program in a bad spot. Hope the next coach can work the portal!!

Exactly, the whole conversation centered around him going 4-0.
The coffin is nailed shut now.

Rich Rodriguez who is now at Jacksonville state? Manny diaz the penn state defensive coordinator?

Time for Mike Hill to make a major hire! And not Alan Major.

Rossomun-No

I think Rich Rod would be an excellent candidate!!!

The whole athletic department needs to be gutted. Fumigate the place and bring in a new crew with a different culture.

The whole dept? Fire every coach, too?

Yeah. Mullen could be his OC again

Is there any chance Jamie Chadwell would leave Coastal for here?

Edit - nm. His new contract is too hefty.

https://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/sports/college/sun-belt/coastal-carolina-university/article248277275.html

Coastal Carolina football coach Jamey Chadwell will be paid a base salary between $850,000 and $1.15 million over each of the next seven years, with increased annual performance bonuses and a hefty buyout for termination without cause, according to details of Chadwell’s new contract through 2027.

Alex Atkins > Josh Gattis

I apologize for the length of this post. But I have done some research. I want to share my findings. I have tried to evaluate all of the coaches that have been suggested in this forum. I think that most on this forum have agreed that we want a HC that has had a considerable amount of HC experience, and we would prefer that most of that experience be at the G5 level. If someone can recruit at a P5 program does not necessarily mean that he can recruit at the G5 level. I apologize if I failed to evaluate a coach that someone suggested.

First, I made a list of all the coaching candidates listed on this forum. Next I eliminated those with no HC experience. I eliminated Alex Atkins, Ryan Walters, Tony Gibson, Clayton White, Bryan Johnson, Josh Gattis, and Alex Golesh.

Next I eliminated those that have too little HC experience. I eliminated Pep Hamilton. His only HC experience was in the XFL where he had a record of 3-2. I also eliminated Phil Longo. He is currently an assistant at UNC, and he was a HC at LaSalle where his record was 7-14.

Next I listed the remainder of the coaches that were mentioned. They are as follows.
Winning seasons /
Coach Winning % Games Coached # Teams Coached losing/season
Urban Meyer .853 219 4 14 /8
Curt Cignetti .783 139 3 11/0
Tom Herman .710 76 2 6/0
Bryan Harsin .709 121 3 8/3
Jerry Mack .673 46 1 4/0
Jamey Chadwell .640 153 4 9/5
Pete Lembo .632 177 3 12/2
Dan Mullen .628 164 2 10/3
Blake Anderson .594 111 2 7/2
Ed Orgeron .587 116 3 6/3
Larry Fedora .560 141 2 8/3
Skip Holtz .557 273 3 14/8
Gene Chizik .500 76 2 3/3
Scott Frost ,479 73 2 1/5
Mike Minter .421 95 1 3/5

The above info may change our mind on some of the coaches. We should not choose a coach because of his name or because he has coached at a particular school. From the above list, I eliminated the coaches that we should not consider at all because of their past performance as a HC. The coaches to be eliminated for poor performance are Gene Chizak, Scott Frost, and Mike Minter. For example, Frost had a winning percentage of .479 and had a winning record for one out of six years coached.

Next I eliminated the coaches, from the above list, that I do not think we have a chance of hiring. I based this info on their win percentage and where they have coached in the past. For example, we have no chance of luring Urban Meyer. If he decides to coach college football again, the best teams in college football will be after him. I eliminated Curt Cignetti. If he decides to leave JMU, he too will have many of the top teams after him. I eliminated Dan Mullen. His winning percentage is not as high as Meyer or Cignetti. but he has coached at Florida. I know that he may have a relationship with Mike Hill. But I do not believe that Mullen wants to go to G5. Why should he? He has a resume to return to P5. I eliminated Tom Herman because he has a .710 winning percentage and last coached at Texas. Next I eliminated Bryan Harsin. He has a .709 winning percentage and has coached at Auburn. He will have plenty of P5 offers when he decides to coach again. I also eliminated Jamey Chadwell. His winning percentage at .640 is sixth on the above list. But he has turned around four different programs. If he decides to leave Coastal, he will have plenty of P5 offers. But I believe that of the coaches in this category, Chadwell would be the one to remain in G5. But could we land him? Would the money be enough to lure him from another program that he has built?

This leaves six coaching candidates that are true possible hires that possibly would have the skills to turn around our program. They are as follows - Jerry Mack, Pete Lembo, Blake Anderson, Ed Orgeron, Larry Fedora, and Skip Holtz.

Jerry Mack’s downside is that he has only turned around one program, and he has a limited HC experience with only 46 games under his belt. All of those at NC Central.

Pete lembo seems to have the best resume. He has the seventh highest winning percentage in the above group while having the third highest games coached. And he has done this while coaching three different teams. He is obviously no one trick pony. Of the coaches above, only Holtz, Harsin, Orgeron, Cignetti, and Lembo have coached three different teams. Chadweel and Meyer coached four different teams. All the others have turned around one or two teams. The more teams turned around creates a greater likelihood of success in the future.

Next is Blake Anderson. His .594 winning percentage is ninth on the above list, and he has been successful at the G5 level. But he is under contract at 1.3 million per year until 2027. I will eliminate Blake Anderson now because of his contract.

Ed Orgeron must also be considered, but his .587 winning percentage is not as good as some on this list. The 2019 championship run with Joe Burrow may have slightly improved his winning percentage. Orgeron has never been a head coach at the G5 level. That should be enough for us to shy away.

Larry fedora has the eleventh highest winning percentage among the above group and must be considered.

Skip Holtz has the twelth highest winning percentage among the above group. Holtz has coached more games than anybody on the list above - 273 games. He has coached three different teams.
Final comparison below:

Coach Winning % Winning seasons/ Winning seasons/ Salary contract
Losing seasons losing seasons % thru
Jerry Mack .673 4/0 100 $425K 2023
Pete Lembo .632 12/2 .857 $465 2024
Ed Orgeron .587 6/3 .667 No contract
Larry Fedora .560 8/3 .727 USFL
Skip Holtz .557 14/8 .636 USFL

Jerry Mack and Pete Lembo have the highest win percentages by individual games and they also have the highest win percentage by the number of winning seasons vs losing seasons (Jerry Mack coached four seasons and had no losing seasons.) If you want to add Jermey Chadwell into this hopeful group, he had a win percentage of .640 (ranks 2ndin the group immediately above) and he coached for 14 seasons and had 9 winning seasons (.642 winning seasons vs losing seasons percentage - ranks 5th among the group immediately above).

After compiling this data, my opinion has changed a bit. When you look at all of the data it is hard to argue against Pete Lembo. He has been very consistent in winning where ever he has been - turned around 3 different programs. Plus he is under contract through 2024 at $465K per year. Is that something that we could buy out? Maybe.

My second choice would be Jerry Mack. His downside is his limited HC experience with only 46 games under his belt. But he has been consistent in that short time frame. Plus his contract is $425K thru 2023.

My third choice would be Skip Holtz or Larry fedora. I could not find their contract info on-line. Both are currently coaching in the USFL.

I am interested in what others think after looking over this data.

I just posted above, and I knew that the tables would screw up. In the first table, there are 5 columns - coach, win %, # games coached, # of different teams coached, # of winning seasons vs losing seasons.

On the lower table, there are 5 columns - coach, win %, winning seasons vs losing seasons, winning seasons vs losing seasons %, salary, contract valid thru year.
