I would need to nearly OD on ADD medication to get through a third of that, but hey, you just quadrupled Mike Hillās research on Healy before he was hired.
clt is hearing that hill has resumes on the kitchen floor
Love it. Data is beautiful.
I might quibble with one or two of your assumptions, but really solid job. You also basically validated most of my personal top 5 picks, before throwing water on them because you said they wouldnāt coach G5. Thatās not a dumb assumption either, though again, I may quibble on one or two. I feel like Herman might take the right G5 job, but I feel like itās likely in Texas or the Midwest. I also wouldnāt write off Mullen as thoroughly as you did. I think his most likely landing spot is at a higher profile G5. I donāt think heād want to take a P5 doormat job,and he isnāt getting a top flight P5 job at this point. Maybe he lands in the Big 12. Iām tipping my hand but these two guys, especially Mullen, are at the top of my list, though mutual interest may be a reach.
I think the biggest flaw in your analysis would be not giving enough weight to regional ties for recruiting and culture purposes.
Check the comments on that video. Gamecock fans are desperate to keep him on staff.
Lembo is an interesting candidate, but Iāll say he is probably among the least āsexyā names on that list. And would he want to leave? He is in the right age range, IMHO, at 52.
He compiled a 33-29 record and a 23-17 record in MAC games in five seasons with [Ball State]. He is the only head coach since Paul Schudel (1985-1994) to post a winning record at Ball State.
I would definitely talk to him if he was interested. He might be another Skip Holtz type coach - maybe wonāt blow past your expectations, but wonāt embarrass the program either.
Since I mentioned him, here is my current favorite:
Mullen would represent the type of higher profile hire that some would think we couldnāt land. But if you hired him youād have to also give him the staff & resources he needs to win. It would be a major investment type hire.
Now for the downside of Mullen:
You have no idea how much I appreciate your contributions here. That took a lot of research and time. After sitting through the entire game yesterday, I needed some hope. This helped.
I agree with most of your analysis. But I would not rule out all of the candidates you did but yes Urban Meyer and some others is likely out of reach.
I want to feel hope and pride when I walk in the Rich. Hoping for an inspiring hire and future wins.
Include in your analysis who can recruit QBs, that should be top 3 conditions on the hireā¦ā¦ did you see that SMU Houston AAC game yesterday? Both have had 10 years worth of not good but great college QBs in the AAC.
We actually agree. Maybe I should quit while we are ahead
A Florida guy makes sense in so many ways. He got a raw deal in the end, and his record there overall was good. Florida thinks they can easily replicate the Spurrier years with each hire. There are reasons besides Saban why Florida, Florida State, Nebraska and Tennessee have had so much trouble and āfailureā since their dynasty coaches. Back then, the players were essentially gathered and held, so they couldnāt leave and no competition could get them. Cheating was rampant but tolerated in quiet secret circles. Fulmer and Tennessee have paid high costs for trying to betray SEC secret cheating, over a prolonged period of years they have paid. Now that most cheating is tolerated if not endorsed by the NCAA, donāt think for a second that Alabamaās, Ohio State andLSU havenāt taken cheating to all new secret levels. Too much money to be legally legitimate
Fantastic research thank you for sharing that.
Here are the only responses I have.
46 games doesnāt seem like a lack of HC experience but thatās 4 years right? Seems pretty substantial to me.
I also like the look of Lembo.
As far as him not being the āsexy pickā Iām all for that.
I do not want them to hire someone to make a splash. I want them to hire someone who knows the game of football and is a good coach.
I posted the long post above. I should have known that the data would scramble. But I think the data is important. So, I am going to post again so it can be better consumed. I eliminated all of the candidates mentioned on this board except six candidates. Go to the above post to read who I eliminated and why. I also eliminated Blake Anderson because of his contract extension through 2027. Although he was on my final six candidates. I added Jarmey Chadwell and a few others that some of you think that we could hire⦠Below is the breakdown so it could better be interpreted. I have 4 columns here - coach, wins, losses, percentage
Coach Wins Losses percentage
Tom Herman 54 22 .710
Jerry Mack 31 15 .673
Pete Lembo 112 65 .632
Dan Mullen 103 61 .628
Ed Orgeron 69 47 .587
Larry Fedora 79 62 .560
Skip Holtz 152 121 .537
The next table shows the number of winning and losing seasons of each coach.
The columns are coach, number of winning seasons, number of losing seasons, percentage
Coach winning seasons losing seasons percentage
Tom Herman 6 0 100
Jerry Mack 4 0 100
Pete Lembo 12 2 .857
Dan Mullen 10 3 .769
Larry Fedora 8 3 .727
Ed Orgeron 6 3 .667
Skip Holtz 14 8 .636
Next I want to compare the number of teams that each has coached. We do not want a one-trick pony. We need someone that has had sustained success over a period of time with different teams.
This table will have 2 columns - coach, number of teams coached
Coach Number of teams coached
Pete Lembo 3
Ed Orgeron 3
Skip Holtz 3
Tom Herman 2
Dan Mullen 2
Larry Fedora 2
Jerry Mack 1
The last comparison is concerning contracts - 3 columns here - coach, salary, contract year
Coach Salary Contract year
Jerry Mack $425K thru 2023
Pete Lembo $465K thru 2024
Skip Holtz USFL NA
Larry Fedora USFL NA
Dan Mullen ESPN analyst NA
Tom Hermen CBS analyst NA
Ed orgeron NA NA
I forgot to add Jarmey Chadwell. here is his data. Coaching record of 98-55 (.640 - rank 3rd among above list) and he has had 9 winning and 5 losing seasons (.642 - rank 7th) and he has coached four teams (rank 1st). His salary is $850-$1.15 M and contract expires after 2028 season.
I donāt recall seeing anywhere but has anyone mentioned a desired date as to when a new coach naming would possibly be announced
I would imagine the search is going to be kept very quiet until it is completed, with no specific timetable. If there are coaches currently employed that are on our prospect list, it may be after the season is over.
Keep in mind what happened with Mike Houston.
After this season, who would take this job? It would take few years to get a team assembled that could have a winning record. This is like Major Price Sanchez on an industrial scale. I am so ashamed
It has already been reported that there is significant interest in the job. Patience is difficult in this situation. The right result is very, very important to the university and Mike Hillās career. I expect the search will reflect that.
Donā t want to rush things but it would be nice to have a coach named before November 28 when contact period for recruiting players begins
What a pessimistic attitude!
What optimism should we expect? This is a joke of a program.
We had 3 nfl WRās on our roster so we have some talent but the problem is thats its mostly all skill position players but on the lines, we are an fcs team.
Austin Pea and Wku were 21-20 at the end of the 3rd quarter. Wku was kicking Niner ass 42-7 at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Austin pea would kick our ass. Delusional
