Football Coach Candidates?

Be sure to wear your Niners gear tomorrow and all week to show everyone what u represent

Perhaps being a fan of this team isn’t in the cards for you, what with it being hopeless and all. Feel free to jump on some Alabama or Ohio State bandwagon.

Why don’t you buy a Watts jersey? After all, he broke the school sack record. It took 5 years. He had 2 sacks last year, 2 sacks the year before that an 0 sacks his first year. What does he have this year? 4? That is huge. We celebrate that! Big zero on the jersey? That’s for you?

It’s shocking they thought enough of us to put us on that list

I think there will indeed be a lot of interest.

It’s somewhat of a risk for a known quantity coach who could command a P5 job right now with no debate, but for anyone who’s not in that boat and needs the final bullet point on their resume to go P5 HC, our HC job would be a great opportunity.

I think we all can agree if you come in and turn this program around your going to get plucked by a big program. Because you’ve really proven yourself.

And if that happens I’ll take it. That means we’ve had some success.

Do I want us to find our lifetime hall of fame coach? Hell yeah. But that may not be our next coach. We may have to settle on being a stepping stone for a while.

Lambert was 5-7 his last year and beat wku 40-14. Healy took his players and got embarrassed in a bowl game. When Lamberts players left, there was nothing but hot air. It took years for Lambert to build a bowl team for Healy to destroy in 3?. And it will take years to ever have another bowl team, if ever.

I don’t know, maybe a name coach that has a proven winning resume could attract talent pretty quickly. There is talent in CLT and NC, but we are not getting it. It is going elsewhere.

I will continue to stay cautiously optimistic on our future success. This is coming from a person that has been at his wits end for many years as I live in the Raleigh area and have made that roller coaster emotional drive for every damn game since Day 1, Year 1. I too am frustrated, but I keep telling myself that:

  1. We are still a really, really young program. (I know that there are other young programs that have been more successful than us, but most of them aren’t competing with an ACC shadow and fighting for attention with other big time professional sports teams in the same city).

  2. We moved to FBS way too early l, which has reflected in our recruitment, coaching, facilities, etc. No team would had ever turned down a move from Independent FCS to CUSA and then to AAC, so we will have to deal with the disappointing growing pains of moving up so damn fast. Each of these should hopefully start being addressed, but we aren’t going to be competing with NC ACC facilities or recruiting anytime in the near future, so we are all going to have to accept the incremental growth such as staged facility expansions, etc.

  3. We have not just unproven coaches, but also an unproven AD, so mistakes were expected. However, that excuse has ran its course, so it is now time to put up or shut up.

  4. All of the above means, even getting a rockstar coach, that it will most likely get worse before it gets better. I just hope that most of us can stick it out long enough to reap the rewards.

I do think that our limited facilities and dismal record will not deter great candidates as long as the $ is competitive, which it seems that we will be able to be much more competitive moving forward. Bringing in a good coach that knows how to take advantage of the portal can change the trajectory of a program pretty quickly.

I guess we shall see. I will keep driving from Raleigh until I see evidence that the school, community and AD has given up. We that happens, I will then follow suit.

Onward and upward (or hopefully at least even for now):crossed_fingers::call_me_hand:

Mike hill is making what? $800,000 per year? Wasn’t Judy making $300k?

How you like them apples?

Hill makes $400k

At least I wrong there. I feel better. Go 9er

Hill has implemented this strategy at Charlotte. After a successful 2019 campaign for the football program, first-year head coach Will Healy’s name was in the mix for several Power 5 jobs and Hill was looking for options to retain him. Recognizing that it would be tough to compete on base salary alone, Charlotte purchased an insurance policy to cover a $500,000 bonus for winning 21 games over three seasons. “We couldn’t pay $1.3 million in salary,” Hill said, “but we could put $60,000 towards a big bonus.” Healy decided to stay at Charlotte.

Wait! There’s more!

“The American invited us to join because of the incredible trajectory of our athletics program,m…”.

Mike Hill, Director of Athletics

I don’t have a problem with that approach at that time since Healy, although with a different coaches players, had a successful year. This either allowed Hill to get off cheaply or not based on the success on the field. If you can’t afford a straight up salary increase (which ends up compounding YOY as this allows one to give one time bumps based on performance). I also don’t have an issue with Hill keeping Healy as long as he did as Hill was probably hoping it would turn. If Hill wouldn’t had made the move this year when he did, then all of that goes out the window.

Factual or blowing smoke? I don’t have a response for that comment from Hill.

However it happened, I’m just glad we were considered.

One could argue that we are way over our heads going into the AAC (and they may be correct); but one could easily argued the same going to CUSA. Equally, one could argue the same for even creating a football program this late in the game.

We won’t know if any of this is true until we know; so my philosophy has quickly adapted to “Swing for the fences and hope like hell for a very strong tail wind”

That’s not how I read it. To me, Hill could not pay that amount of salary. Period. So he found some company that thought good in taking $60,000 from us at a $500,000 risk, betting there was no freakin way Healy could win 21 games in 7 years! Is that a one time $60k or $60k per year? Instead of paying Healy $60k, much less the huge bonus, he gave it to a bookie? It’s a smooth move if Hill hired a great winning coach, but he didn’t did he? House always wins

Surprise, surprise. Same names as our list.

I bet they can pay

They were paying 1.3 mil this year so close to what we were going to pay Houston and likely in the range we are going to be paying new guy. They invest 11.4 mil in football compared to our 12.7.
