I could hear the postgames last year on campus.
Yeah, 1660 was clear up until about Popular Tent Road after the games on the way home.
610 - I could hear well into Union County, usually I could hear the entire postgame on the way home.
1660 - I could hear clearly onto I-485 and reasonably understand it to around the Mint Hill area.
730 - I can not hear/understand ANYTHING at all, even in the parking deck. Kept checking all the way out to I-485. Nothing but staticā¦very disappointing.
So basically you guys would rather have a station where you can hear the pre and post game shows while driving too and from campus, but which pretends you donāt exist until pregame time; instead of a radio station with a weak signal at night, but whom talks about you daily on all their local programming?
I for one am willing to give 730 a chance to grow with us and improve, simply because they actually care about us and put some effort into their product. ESPN didnāt switch from 610 to 730 just to get Mike and Mike on in the Charlotte market. Iād be surprised if Lanny Ford isnāt working on getting permissions for a stronger signal.
Someone that knows something about this explain why they can stream the Alan Major show so well, I clicked the link on twitter and heard the show pretty clear last week. Can we not do the same thing for the post and pre game shows?

Football, I get what you are saying, but what good is talking about us all day long when fans and potential fans canāt even tune in to listen to the games that the station is hyping as they are being played? Our football games will be able to be heard since we will be playing mostly day games the first several years, but we still need to have the actual games heard at night when they are played then. I know we have all kinds of financial hurdles, but this is one that needs to be jumped over someway, somehow.

Itās not like we donāt know who to contact about these things. Will 730 be broadcasting the last Chack Talk? If so we can ask them there or Monday at The Alan Major Show. I assume Judy will be there or at least someone from the AD. Thatās who we talk to. I posted a list of local stations above.
Just went down to the car to get some stuff out, and tried out some AM signals.
Conditions:
Electricity on but engine off.
University City (I live on the same block as campus).
Several 3 story apartment buildings around, none with significant amounts of metal in them.
Radio is original equipment in a '98 Mustang
730 and 1410 were choppy but understandable. 610 and 1660 quite clear.
Bottom line, if youāre near metal structures (aka UNC Charlotte parking decks) youāll have a hard time getting any AM signal. Also, car engines create nearly just as much AM signal interference. Even when the campus radio station was operating, WCRO, I couldnāt pick the signal up at the old parking lot where the Student Union now sits and the transmitter was on top of the Dalton Tower. Basically 2000 ft away.
We had the station on 730 AM for quite a while. I think we were a decent way down 85 before JFelt made us change the station. The whole way, from the parking deck, down 485, and down 85 we had nothing but static. I think we did make out the word Xavier while we were driving.
Point being, I donāt think there was a lot of metal structures along out drive and we couldnāt hear a think. Iām more than willing to give 730 a chance, but we do need to complain because this is ridiculous. If there are plans to improve, fine. If not, whatās the point? Save the money.

I know when I turn my headlights on it kills AM signals.

Do you work for 730 or something? Itās pretty simple, old station could be heard over a 10 mile radius from the University⦠new station canāt be heard on campus⦠same car, same radio, thatās a problem. period.
So basically you guys would rather have a station where you can hear the pre and post game shows while driving too and from campus, but which pretends you donāt exist until pregame time; instead of a radio station with a weak signal at night, but whom talks about you daily on all their local programming?

NO!..Iām excited about the network, the Niner Reports and the Niners discussion on 730. My ONLY complaint is the non-existent signal at night, but it is a big complaint!
Some of you guys don't understand. 730 is forced to power down after dark because AM signals bounce off our upper atmosphere after dark creating many more stations available. 50,000 watt WBT reaches about 100 miles daytime while the same power at night reaches from Cuba to Canada. They are also directional. Travel 30 miles west of charlotte at night and the signal goes to nearly zero. Combined with interference (steel structures, inductive electronic motors, lights, etc.) makes AM kind of a crap shoot. A sister FM station would solve the problem but I'm sure there's all kinds of difficulties trying to make that happen. Now the on campus situation I'm less understanding. I can buy a 30 dollar transmitter that would cover the campus and I believe with it's limited range would be legal. It seems to me the campus thing could be solved if powers to be took the initiative. Somebody needs to address this problem because a school this size with potentially big time sports deserve better.
Yeah I think we all get why - we just are not happy with the result.
Iāll only address the latter part since Wup mentioned we get the former. I believe we have this infrastructure in place from the failed WCRO or whatever it was called idea from that old dude who was Student Body Pres several years ago. Itād be worthless off campus but given the way the traffic patterns are, itād be a way for people to hear the bulk of the post game trying to get off campus. Maybe?
All that needs to be said. 610 is crystal clear at the campusā¦now, nothing but static. No ability to hear any of the postgame. How can we bring in new fans or reach out to any fans at all if the signal and our games cannot be heardā¦especially anywhere near the campus??
Switching to 730 is a FAIL if you canāt hear whatās on it.
So could the game of Friday be heard any where? If not whatās the point of having it. Like someone said, what would a business be paying for to advertise? Iām sure they donāt tell the business that no one can actually hear it on the radio and they would need to listen to the internet. If I was a company, I wouldnāt buy a spot.
Weāre all mad because just like the game intros, it got worse from last year⦠taking steps back.
Well Iām in belmont and they say the tower is in belmont and all i got was static. If the tower is near the abbey it could not have been more than 3 miles away.

Map of tower location. No idea on broadcast radius, but the tower is 18.5 miles from campus, operating at 195 watts at night, versus 10000 watts in the daytime.
Compared to WFNZ, which operates at 1000 watts at night, and is 8.5 miles from campus.
