I emailed them and received a response from Lanny as well. He mentioned that they were changing streaming services and that there was a problem Friday with the feed that will be corrected for Tuesday.
Will that help the āover-the-airā broadcast reception improve?
He didnāt say specifically but Iāve not been able to receive 730 on campus on multiple occasions, so I doubt it. Hopefully they will be added to the ESPN Radio app so we can at least stream it though.
Well Iām in belmont and they say the tower is in belmont and all i got was static. If the tower is near the abbey it could not have been more than 3 miles away.
So where IS the tower and what is the broadcast radius?
Map of tower location. No idea on broadcast radius, but the tower is 18.5 miles from campus, operating at 195 watts at night, versus 10000 watts in the daytime.
Compared to WFNZ, which operates at 1000 watts at night, and is 8.5 miles from campus.
Well looks like they might as well shut down at night because downtown Belmont is all of 2 miles from that location and I couldnāt pick them up.

For the average Joe, that is almost worthless. When you get in the car going to and from a game, you want to be able to hear the pre-/post game shows on the radio.

So what youāre saying is that even if we could work out getting a repeater, it would do no good.

Well, the pre/postgame report is getting from campus to that tower somehow⦠youād think they could set up a low-power local AM transmitter on top of Halton or something, to at least cover campus. Alternatively, if WFNZ can get 1000 watts at night, youād think with enough effort (and doubtless, dollars) our station could, too.

Theyāre content to let AM radio die a slow death.
so whats the reason we cant get on FM? How are all those other dumb stations on FM⦠as i scan for games or when going on trips, thereās some weird ass music and pointless jibber jabber. never understood how they make money. Kind of like the candy store at Concord Mills. The mgmt prob pays them to be there⦠they would have to sell a huge amount of candy to cover expenses.
I just donāt understand how a university the size of Charlotte and striving to be great in athletics, but canāt get a damn basketball game on the radio without static. I donāt care how they do it or what needs to happen⦠DO IT. We shouldnāt even have to wonder about this.
This makes me think thereās dumb people on campus. Itās not open heart surgery. Itās an old radio! put our games on there to where we can hear it. Close down the science department for a week and lets get everyone working on this delicate difficult task. How many PHDs are employed by the university?
Sheep are being cloned and we canāt listen to our games because they turn the signal down at night. wow. oh well, at least the AD tried.
This pisses me off for the simple fact that it shouldnāt even be an issue. I guess all D1 schools are having this issue. Donāt they play high school football games on the radio?

Itās two-fold, and mostly comes down to money. A) FM stations do not want to interrupt their normal programming because their normal listeners complain about it, and they are afraid of losing them. B) If they will interrupt their programming to allow you to carry your 3-hour broadcast, they are going to charge a lot of money. That has to paid for out of pocket or by selling your own advertisements to cover it.
My guess is that weāve looked into having our broadcasts on an FM station, and that it will probably cost double or more what it does to be on an AM station. Also, the FM station is not going to give us any coverage outside of the actual broadcast. The best solution, as some have mentioned, would be for Charlotte to get an FM sportstalk station and for us to be their flagship program. AM gives us better coverage on the air during the week, but the signal is weak when the games are played (or non-existant). A current FM station would only be a tool to have the games on, and would not discuss us outside of that. An FM sportstalk station would be the best of both worlds, potentially, if the mothership didnāt force their games on the station.
