Green Line

Here is the proposed route map and related colors direct from the CATS web site:

http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/CATS/Rapid+Transit+Planning/Home.htm

There will be a CATS public meeting on the light rail project on Monday, May 1st at 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the University Hilton Fountain View Room. Grab some friends (BEFORE drinks) and let’s politely show our support for the GREEN Line’s being switched to the NORTHEAST CORRIDOR.
GREEN MEANS GO!! THE GREEN LINE SHOULD GO TO NINER NATION!!
I’m planning to attend the 4-25 meeting at noon at Eastland Mall. I’ll remind everyone a few days before then.
The 4-25 meeting is regarding the Southeast corridor, so we don’t need to go to the meeting on 4-25. The Northeast meetings are on 5-1 & 2. I’m definitely planning to attend on 5-2 or maybe 5-1 instead, depending on my schedule.

NORTHEAST CORRIDOR PUBLIC MEETINGS
Staff will present project alternatives and receive public input.
All stations will be discussed at both meetings.
Specific topics include: Sugar Creek, UNCC and I-485.

I took another look at what the CATS guy (Olaf Kinard, see his note below) said about the route colors in a previous post. I’m concerned now because they apparently want to keep the same corridor colors they had previously set for BUS ROUTES.

"Thanks for your comments. It was something we tried to accommodate. However, many years ago, before rail was developed, the city department over the transit system used green to represent local routes and red to represent express routes. All schedules use these colors to make the information easier for attracting new riders. These colors were replicated across the 3,800 bus stops CATS has across the region. Unfortunately, we found that the use of the green and red colors created a “brand” equity with customers regarding the system’s services. The cost to replace all 3800 bus stops, switch out all 1,200,000 annual schedules, etc. and to re-brand the system would prove to be economically prohibited.
I hope you understand.
Thanks"
Olaf Kinard

if green isn’t availble… just ANY color other than blue

Gold would be an appropriate second choice.

Although I’m not as optimistic about this as I was before I re-read what the CATS rep (Olaf) said about the route colors, here’s a reminder about the meetings next week where we can have our say. Looks like I can only go to the one on 5-2, so if anyone here goes on 5-1, please come back here and let us know how it went. Please go sober, respectful, serious and professional. Thanks!!

UPDATE!!

It’s beenconcluded that the line won’t be named green or gold because this line is a continuation of the south line and must have the same color for common sense transit reasons(Which I didn’t know before).

The south line(under construction) cannot be changed in color this late in the process. Besides, the fact that this color applies to South as well as NE corridors means that the color green is not as necesary anyway. At this point I am dropping this effort as far as I am involved.

Thanks to University City councilman Barnes for pursuing this.

Thanks, guys. It was a good effort. I appreciate your dedication.

I hope if they make it come through campus, they put it on the outer fringe. I think the campus might be ruined and be very ugly if it was divided by a rail line.

The rail will pass campus travelling in the median of N. Tryon. There will be a stop @J.W. Clay either way. There are two options from there.

1.) N. Tryon stop, constinues past school with a stop at CRI and then Mallard Creek Ch. Rd.

2.) On-campus stop. Will go from N. Tryon median and cross the “concord-bound” lanes of N. Tryon(US 29) at grade which means level with the road and there will be a crossing arm on N. Tryon. The track will veer into those woods and cross Toby Creekand end up in front of Squires hall(shown here). Thenit will exit through the woods closer to Mallard Creek Ch. Rd. I also plan to ask DOT(who CATS told me to talk to) to get a stoplight at CRI Main entrance(which means left turns into and out of it, if ya wanna make campus visitor friendly anyway )

The line will end before I-485 most likely

Thanks for the info. I personally would prefer the #1 option you listed. I want to keep our campus a campus… not some depot for downtown crime to stop and shop.

Student Senators Kile (lutz9er) and Justin Ritchie attended the May 1 meeting.

Below is a little bit from a UC Neighbors article.

Thanks for the effort. Once I realized that the NE corridor bus line was already blue, I knew it was a lost cause, due to the cost, etc.

guys…here is the update of the meetings concerning the light rail and UNCC…lots of good information…please read…

http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/CATS/Rapid+Transit+Planning/Northeast+Corridor/Northeast+Old+Meetings.htm

Article from the O. that says new shuttle service could be in place THIS Fall… Three routes.

http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/14766768.htm

we can call it the Niner Line

we can call it the Niner Line

You know, that’s a good question. What are they calling it? And, what will the shuttles look like?

Does anyone know?

Hope it’s not those little golf carts…

I think the article said they would start out by using CATS buses possibly.

we can call it the Niner Line

That would seem obvious. What are they calling it though?

i sent an email. i’ll post a response if i get one. by pushing people on these details now, they’ll remember us in the future. if we want the fire trucks around campus to have our logo on them and school colors like those at chapel hill or clemson, you have to start with small details like these.

thanks for catching this.
