Higher Education News (non-UNC Charlotte)

Yeah—-it would be much better to spend tax payer dollars on a basketball court.

Yep, taxpayer dollars have definitely paid for quite a number of basketball courts, not to mention football fields. Don’t have to look any further than uptown Charlotte for that. Or closer with the current expansion of JRS.

BTW, the reported six-figure cost for the reconfiguation of the WH tennis court into a basketball one - supposedly it was mostly repainting lines - does seem excessive but since it was paid for privately I just have to shrug. Gave up long ago trying to understand government spending plus no current day equivalent of a Senator William Proxmire holding anyone accountable.

She donated another $63 to A&T today.

I was unaware of that when I posted about her $45 million donation 4-5 years ago.

She should donate $70M to Elizabeth City State in honor of how many points they dropped on ECU.

Poll: In a dramatic shift, Americans no longer see four-year college degrees as worth the cost

Just 33% agree a four-year college degree is “worth the cost because people have a better chance to get a good job and earn more money over their lifetime,” while 63% agree more with the concept that it’s “not worth the cost because people often graduate without specific job skills and with a large amount of debt to pay off.”

Am I the only one that reads these announcements as, “we now plan to admit even less students from families making less than $200,000.” Maybe it’s just me. I’m a cynic.

I think they’re competing for the top students. They have tons of money. They don’t need to skew the admissions for financial reasons. It’s a long play if you think about it - the top students are more likely to give back 10 fold or more once they graduate and make their fortune.

The unsaid part is that room and board and other fees are usually as much or more than tuition these days, so it’s not free college. It’s just heavily discounted.

“New” branding for UNC Chapel Hill. Notice similarities with Charlotte?

Lot going on there in Chapel Hill, they announced developing their large piece of land off campus to add dorms, STEM school expansion (maybe even adding engineering), seems controversial. Add to it potentially moving Hoops out there no one is happy about.

The North Campus is the former Horace Williams Airport. UNC-CH bought it years ago and expected to move several academic programs there. None of them wanted to move there. It is too far to walk from the main campus and is a hike from downtown.

I’m a UNC-CH Law School grad and have been told 3-4 times at various receptions and dinners in Charlotte that a new Law School will be built there in the immediate future.

Interesting, seems they are trying to get buy in for something to move there.

Was there on a kids college visit a couple years ago, I do see their Chancellors point, the infrastructure needs a refresh as compared to what other schools have done in the last couple decades, buildings are old & not in a good way. Not sure why they wouldnt rebuild modern buildings on the top side of campus. Appreciated their tour, the tour guides were very honest about the limitations in getting classes you need in certain majors, and the size of the classes, in particular anything Stem.

Their new Chancellor seems to have quite a challenge on his hands, as change doesnt seemed welcome.

Uncch nearly acquired an established engineering program in Detroit area (I think) last year. Part of the plan was to establish a program in chapel hill. There was pushback from NCSU. Sounded like NCSU was against them having mechanical engineering and that on top of cost voided this move. Engineering program without mechanical is not ideal.

Some UNC System trivia - the original school of engineering at UNC-CH was transferred to NC State in 1935.
