I’ve got a question (Charlotte Observer)

Hunter Bailey wrote the article. He’s not an Observer employee, however, so the “author card” at the bottom shows Lydia Craver, who is the new executive sports editor. She’s been here about 18 months.

I clicked it! I read it!

I wanted to see how easy it is to find the article on Charlotte Observer. Here are my observations:

  • Could not find on the main page. A lot about Panthers new HC, there was a Duke/Carolina article and High School Sports articles.
  • Clicked on Sports and it was the lead article. No longer lead and need to scroll on a phone to see the article. Almost to the point where I would stop.
  • Clicked on College Sports and it was the 2nd Article behind a Clemson Article about a QB transfer. No longer 2nd Article, but is listed under Recommended without a pic, but if you scroll further you do see a pic with the article underneath.

Overall, not hard to find the article but would expect it to be on the Homepage if the Observer wants to maximize views on it.

Well I’ve shared it with my friends and family, so there’s that. I suggest y’all do the same.

Agreed…if the Observer really wants this to work (and garner the most all important “clicks”) @LangstonW gotta make the articles easily accessible. BTW…went to the Observer Twitter account…not sure I’ve seen the article “promoted” on their Twitter handle.

Again…if you want clicks…especially from a jaded fanbase…gotta reach out and do more to let us know it’s even there.

Or is this another half assed attempt to placate us then blame US when it doesn’t get the necessary clicks??

As an aside…there is an article being promoted on the Observer Twitter handle about a UNC grad that’s a NASA asttronaut.

There you go.

The article is easily accessible. It’s at the top of the main sports page

https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/

Observer’s Charlotte 49ers page (get there from the sports page choose 49ers in the menu)

https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sports/college/charlotte-49ers/

It’s also been posted on the following:

Observer Twitter

Observer Instagram

Stories populate to the main page when audience mandates it, based on an algo, though sometimes overwritten.

With Panthers naming new coach today, most sports stories are going to take a second seat. We would’ve had that story out earlier this week but there was some trouble we had getting the interview with the young man.

On the college page and all pages, as more stories come in, older ones get pushed down.

Best place to start is always the 49ers page.

I wouldn’t call this attempt half anything. I am trying to do the best I can. I was going to come here and drop link but several of y’all beat me to it.

And more to come.

I hear ya…even moreso…I believe you.

But I do think it’s gonna take a clone of you to put the work and passion into it as you have done for highschool coverage.

Hopefully this is the start of both sides lifting up each other to new heights…it can happen if we embrace each other.

I read, clicked, replied and retweeted btw

Thanks all we can ask for

Also forgot to mention in the printed paper today, the story is the main display item on the sports front.

Can’t wait to see the sports front page coverage Sunday with color pictures after we kick ecu’s ass!
Oh right. Dook plays the tar holes Saturday too. Well I’ll pray real hard and see what happens. I heard that works.

When the baseball team got back from Houston at Midnight, Jon Tritsch was there. Didn’t ask for any clicks. Didn’t even ask if he should go. Just got off his ass and did his job. He’s still doing it.

Up to this point…THIS is exactly what The Observer is NOT.

And is why the support ifor the Observer isn’t there from our fanbase. The goal of the coverage shouldn’t be about generating clicks…it should be a labor of love to simply cover and support the local community.

Do that…and the clicks will come eventually and organically
