I think he's a phenomenal slasher and we need to use him as such. However I still feel his ball handling is suspect and will get exploited if we keep allowing him to try to go one on one from 20 foot out. This stuff deserves it's own thread. Curtis ended up with 4 rebounds. They killed us on the boards other than Iti. Last year Curtis was a putback machine. He and Eddie need to slash and get play closer to the basket. No one other than Iti/Nance are in position to crash the boards.
yeah i definately agreeâŚcurtis was known for his great slashing in high school why not exploit him in what he does best oh wait no that just makes too much sense
The fact of the matter is close games are won and lost at the free throw line and we missed our opportunities to win this game. If we plan on making a run in the tournament then we have got to make free throws, period.
The tournament was a forgone conclusion before the season, but is not so now. Lets face it, we have a lot of work to do to MAKE THE TOURNAMENT.
Glad you said it. Iâm saying the same thing to Chisox right now off board.
There will be a lot of disappointed people at the end of the year. I think when everyone said they expected a Sweet 16 - they didnt mean 16 total wins.
I like Lutz as a person, heâs very intelligent and many writers have called him a diamond in the rough. I think rough describes it perfectly and I personally think the flaws are starting to shine through because for the first time in a while lutz has the tools to have a complete team. Before we saw the likes of diego and jobey throwing up threes (at least we set screens then) and most of the inside points came from trash clean-up. Now that Lutz has a powerful inside player and another post prescence coming along what does he do, play the same old style. The thing that upset me most is when asked about the free throw problem he said, itâs all mental. I donât care what the source is Lutz, I just want you to actually do something about it, free throws have already cost us two very winnable games, and are important because charlotte still cannot hold a lead or put a team away, another Lutz trait apparently. Show me something new bobby, I think weâve reached the apex of where constant 3-bombing can take us.

I agree but my statement also referred to the conference tournment as well, should have specified that.
Originally posted by Powerbait@Dec 6 2004, 10:49 AM Chris Nance went 2-3 from the FT line and had 2 offensive rebounds in 7 minutes. He is a beast. Bobby is wasting him on the bench, he needs to play because they guy will win us games with his tenacity. Not biased are we eh Nuclear Nance? I like Nance a lot but Iti's presence inside against Alabama was strong I thought and I was very proud of him. Maybe you bring Nance in some on the offensive end, but I can't fault Bobbby for sticking with Iti late in the game. It was truely one of his better games.

One area where Nance is better than Iti is his range of defense. He can cover a broader part of the court than Iti. But this isnât Iti versus Nance at all. Itâs more of a âWhy play Curtis at the 5 (when Iti is on the bench) with Drayton at the 4 when Nance is available and can hit a jumper, get a board, or nail an FT.â
I love Basdenâs game but over his career I would not consider him a consistent strong finisher. I could not name a strong consistent finisher on our roster since DeMarco. I know Eddie has attacked the basket strong in the past (Syracuse, a great dunk/ finish) but he as many of our big men over the years do not finish well.
I also consider finishing hitting free throws after a foul. Eddie frustrates me at the line and I believe he banked one in Saturday. All that being said I want him on the court the maximum minutes. He is a great rebounder and probably will be close to the top of the conference in steals.
I agree with everyone on the last shot selection being bad but the one thing I would have liked to see was Mitchell getting the ball on the last play with a clear out and everyone else crashing the boards. Mitchell had proven he was hitting his free throws. He also had Albert Weber on him during the last OT. Weber is a skinny freshman 2G forced into action. Alabama would had been forced to react to his speed and drive and I like our chances in that situation a whole lot more. You do not have to react a lot to a corner 3 point shot. Mitchell driving at least gets the basketball close to the basket instead of a long bounce from a 3.
Oh well same oh same oh.
If we could do it all over again here is what I would like to see happen:
After Alabama hit the shot to take the lead, we inbound to Mitch. Mitch brings it up the court fast and furious and attempts to go coast to coast. I think that wouldâve given us a good chance to catch Bama off guard (Krauser of Pitt did it last year to win a game) if nothing is there then we take a timeout instead of trying to set the offense with close to 15 seconds left.
After the timeout we come out get the ball inbounds cleanly and get the ball to Curt before the defense can set. After that we let the big man go to workâŚ

I agree. If we were gonna wait till 7.5 seconds left to call a TO, why even do it. We didnât give ourselves enough time to run a good play, and I agree, maybe Mitch should have just tried to go coast to coast. Lord knows he was getting to the rack with relative ease. And, of course, I like his chances of hitting at least 1 of 2 from the line.
USC just fired Henry Bibby - the second coach in two years fired in December. Bibbyâs USC record was not dissimilar to Lutzâs at Charlotte (.539 vs. .603) and prior to the past two crappy years at USC - Bibbyâs teams averaged 18 wins/yr versus 19 for Lutz.
I guess my point is that nobody is immune. Luckily Charlotte has not tailspinned like USC over the past two years (13 wins each of last 2 seasons), however should Lutz continue losing games like Alabama and Rutgers, I think that Rose & Co. should consider other alternatives.
I think untill we win a big game against Cincy type team, you will continue to hear discussion on here and suggestions that Lutz be fired by fans.
