Conroy not a bad choice. Definitely gotten the most out of The Citadel program since Les Robinson. BTW, Conroy served as an assistant to Buzz Peterson at Tulsa, UT, and Coastal.
Hey if they’re giving $225-$250K I’ll do it. Of course I don’t have experience, but then again someone with experience would charge more.
I can’t believe the UH AD wouldn’t keep Penders after he won the Conf. Tourney & made a NCAA appearance. WTF? :o

We fired a coach that won 19 games.
It’s not how many you win, it’s when. If those 19 games included winning the Conf. Tourney & an appearance in the NCAA, Bobby wouldn’t have been fired.
UNCW’s AD has handled this whole process really poorly and I just want the whole thing to be over, no matter who coaches the team. Most of the people on the Seahawks board feel the same…to whatever degree they represent the Seahawk fanbase. The difference between UNCW’s coach search and Charlotte’s is pretty big.
That said, Benny was not “run out” by anyone. He ran himself out by being an awful, awful coach.
jeff goodman twitter saying that Ed Conroy expected to turn it down.
jeff goodman twitter saying that Ed Conroy expected to turn it down.
I thought he tweeted it was Conroy’s job to turn down. Implying it’s his if he wants it, however I could have read that wrong.
i believe you are right. With the history of UNCW and their search i read the apostrophe s as an “is”. my bad.
The comedy continues. Kelly Mehrtens was rumored to have contacted Conroy without first asking for permission about 2 weeks ago. Then he was mentioned as a candidate. Monday morning it is published in the Charleston Post and Courier that he has been offered the job, which is followed by the Wilmington Star News beat writer writing the same. Last night she calls WECT-TV after their late “early” newscast to say they were incorrect in reporting that Conroy has been offered. Neither newspaper mentions this latest episode.
In addition, the women’s coach’s contract has run out and she has yet to make any decisions there as well.
TNA, I am sorry for you and Teal Nation.
It’s pretty bad out at the dub right now. Their AD has no idea what she’s doing.
Is there any talk of their AD getting fired?
Two things make that a harder decision than if the AD were a Terry Holland type or or a Bobby Lutz type AD
If nothing else, I’M talking about it.

She could be your boss by the end of the week. I foresee The Niner Alchemist working the sidelines next season.

At least I would be willing to do it. This is the least wanted HC job in college basketball right now. We’re like the me asking girls out of college sports. Terrible. I don’t ev…oh, sorry, I just saw the position listed on Craigslist. Under part-time.
This is the perfect time to try something new. Let the boosters coach!
Pick 6-7 boosters and let them try and coach the team. Everyone sits back and complains about how the head coach is doing it, well, now is the chance for the fans to show they really can do it better!
Is it the same AD who ran the last search that ended with Moss? I remember there being some public arguing between different factions of the process over which of the two finalists would get the offer…I don’t remember the details but it was a messy situation for a pretty desirable job at the time.
Different AD there, but she has one year remaining on her contract at UNCW. She is sneaky, calling players in their rooms on the road, asking what is going on, what;s being said, waiting for a player to leave the building and ride them around campus asking them questions. Has gone on with both basketball teams, tennis, volleyball and now has begun with baseball.
They have some serious issues.

These are the things that set a coach up for failure. It’s easy to sit back here and say Benny was a terrible coach but if I remember correctly, they were actually half decent a few years ago. They finished 2-9 after firing him. He was 7-14 this year with losses to GW, Miami, USF, VCU, Wake, and Richmond. Not excusing his lack of success, just saying he at least should have been given the season to finish up. He could’ve done better than 2-8. Don’t know whether it was poor recruiting, poor coaching, internal bust ups, or the combination of all things, but Benny is a good guy, respected among colleagues, and you don’t fire guys like that mid season and expect to bring in a good replacement.

True stuff. Benny was a class act and firing him right before Homecoming was silly, unproductive, and is one of the principal reasons we’re having so much trouble getting a coach now.
That said, Benny was never a good Xs and Os guy and he simply isn’t head coach material (in my opinion). You can argue that he had some obstacles that would have stalled any coach and that he wasn’t given enough time…and maybe you would be right. But watching his team night in and night out, I can’t agree. I don’t think Benny has what it takes to be a head coach.
