It's not as bad here as it is at UNCW... yet.

Latest twist in UNCW Coaching Search

So on to the next one, Vince Taylor?

The good news is that today Benny permission to seek other employment. He had not been allowed to under the terms of his contract. Assistants Henry Dickerson (Briscoe’s coach at NCCU) and Justin Furr have been cut loose. Brooks Lee is the lone coach there for now.

No coach since January 28. This must be the worst coaching search ever conducted in history.

Accurate. Every single mistake that one can make in a coaching search has been made.

The UNCW AD is going to take a candidate to the Final Four, then during a timeout, will get down on one knee and offer the job on the jumbotron…they’ll have to say yes!

Sounds like the Seahawks have some serious issues at the top.
Different AD there, but she has one year remaining on her contract at UNCW. She is sneaky, calling players in their rooms on the road, asking what is going on, what;s being said, waiting for a player to leave the building and ride them around campus asking them questions. Has gone on with both basketball teams, tennis, volleyball and now has begun with baseball.

They have some serious issues.
What the hell??? Riding kids around campus?? Is she trying to get lucky or something…

Vince Taylor is an extremely strong candidate, I’m surprised he hasn’t gotten more attention from us. One of the best recruiters in the country at Louisville, has NBA experience and has done well at Minnesota since moving back to college. He stacks up to the assistants we are looking at, it would be unreal if UNCW fumbles their way into such a good hire.

Funny, now Mehrtens offers the job to Conroy. What a PR disaster.

Conroy extended offer, WECT
UNC Wilmington athletic director confirms offer to Citadel’s Conroy, Charleston Post and Courier

Interesting, only in what it tells about spending in athletics… This will definitely be a Good Friday.

Since UNCW fired Benny Moss on Jan. 28, 14 Division I programs have fired…and hired a coach.

And looking like fools over how the search has been handled.

According to recently released 2009 figures, The Citadel spent $1.22 million on its men’s basketball team. This is 216th nationally, and sixth in the 12-team SoCon, where Davidson is first ($1.53 million) and 2010 champion Wofford is last ($740,000).

UNCW spent a similar amount as The Citadel, however, relative to its CAA competition the Seahawks have fallen farther behind. UNCW’s $1.13 million is 12th in the CAA and 240th nationally. VCU spent $2.7 million, a league record, and that figure is 90th nationally and also $800,000 more than VCU spent on men’s basketball in 2008, according to figures provided by the U.S. Dept. of Education.

Damn trying to get the players to spy on the Coach for the AD. What a bunch of crap! I need to contact my 3rd Cousin who’s on the UNCW Swim Team to see if they get harassed by the AD.

Now he’s in the interview mix with Lutz and others for the Marshall job, which of course pays 2+ times what UNCW will offer.

No word from Conroy yet but Merhtens interviewed College of Charleston assistant Mark Byington around lunch today. We’re up to double digits I believe.

TNA, are the natives restless?

Vegas has HP being the next UNCW coach at 5:1

Disgusted, crestfallen, dumbstruck, melancholy. We’re really feeling every negative emotion possible. I’m trying denial this week. Everything’s going exactly as planned!

UNCW should interview Bobby but interview him for the AD position.

No chance, I know too much about what has gone on already.

She has a year left (if she survives) on her contract, that makes it tough on any new coach.

Jeff Goodman:

Source told FOXSports.com that Robert Morris coach Mike Rice turned down Tulane offer: next up for Green Wave could be Citadel's Ed Conroy.
UNCW is now in Day 68 of their search.

per Goodman on twitter:

Sources have told FOXSports.com that Citadel’s Ed Conroy has chosen Tulane over UNC-Wilmington.

Damn. Tulane is better than UNCW? I thought being near the beach would be more enticing, but I guess that AD has really screwed up at UNCW.

Tulane is a better job than UNCW right now because of how this coaching search has gone. I got this e-mail this morning:

"Dear Students,

While the core mission of UNCW focuses on academics and providing the most powerful learning experience for our students, athletics also plays an important part in the lives not only of our students but of the entire, broad university community, as well. I know that the search for a new head coach for men’s basketball is on the minds of many people, and I would like to take this opportunity to provide you a brief update.

Since the end of the basketball season, the search committee has been identifying and reviewing potential candidates. We believed we had a firm commitment, but yesterday we learned that was not the case. To be certain, searches are complicated and complex processes, especially where contracts are involved. You might recall in the early 1990s that head basketball coach Bobby Cremins left Georgia Tech where he was extremely successful to go to the University of South Carolina. Three days later, he returned to Georgia Tech after indicating that he had a change of heart. Similarly, Greg Marshall, head coach at Winthrop, was recruited to go to the College of Charleston. He even held a press conference to announce that move, only to return the next day as coach at Winthrop. Ironically, the person who replaced him at College of Charleston was Bobby Cremins.

Why am I telling you this? We all may know of numerous other situations where an individual was recruited by multiple institutions, only to take the one with the best financial package or change decisions for personal reasons. I am providing these examples to remind all of us that, despite rumors and speculation to the contrary, people routinely change their minds during negotiations for a variety of reasons. As disappointing as that may be at times, I have been in this business long enough to know that such situations are common; I also know that in the end, we will be successful.

I am working closely with our athletic director Kelly Mehrtens and our search committee to continue the process of identifying the right coach – an individual who not only will move our basketball program forward by winning championships, but who also is committed to our same values, especially when it comes to our proud tradition of having highly successful athletes in the classroom.

Meanwhile, I ask you to continue to be patient and supportive of the process, as well as the individuals who are involved in this important search. I am sure that we all want this search to yield the best person for our university. We are fortunate to have some of the best student athletes in the country who are led by a group of dedicated coaches and support staff in the Athletics Department. They are second to none, and I am extremely proud of the great work they all do every day.

Go Seahawks."

TNA, was that from your chancellor?
