Yeah, that would be tough to live up to.

Good for them for even threatening legal action. Sure they got paid by Miami, so they got something out of the deal, but these free transfers are going to have to be addressed.

The NCAA needs to either require players to sign 2-year contracts (with severe clawback provisions in place) or adopt a soccer-like process with transfer fees required for player movement…..or maybe some combination of both.

All parties are getting smarter as this evolves. Contracts should be written with scheduled payments based on conditions met, such as number of games played, to include finishing the season and any Bowl games.

All of us working for a living are paid for performance, including professional athletes so these quasi-pro athletes masquerading as amateurs should have the same experience. These ADs are employers and should be able to hire/fire based on performance, needs and talent availability.

Interesting it took so long.

From the look of things he’s gonna have stiff competition.

Basically clickbait since there’s no context on those numbers.

Just a reminder - D2 athletes are on partial scholarships, while D3 is non-scholarship.

Pretty sure there are a myriad of reasons why an athlete would retire. Typically it’s been for medical reasons though that wouldn’t be the case here. Suspect financial is tops.

Would love to see more information on this.

If D2 players enter the portal, I don’t think there are enough freshman, FBS move downs or D3 move ups to equal that percentage.

Maybe. Maybe the FBs move downs?

Many players commit to a D2 or D3 school with the intention of proving themselves and moving up. This data says that is not happening for the overwhelming majority of them especially if you add in the lateral (same division) or downward transfers.

That’s a real shame. I know a local coach who worked his way up to D1 after initially playing D3 and then D2.

Excellent question.

Seems unlikely D3 players get pushed to the portal unless they are a problem child who would get cut anyway.

D3 needs players that can pay full freight tuition and fees, and in many cases handle the academics (see John’s Hopkins, MIT, Chicago, etc.) correct?

A lot of D2 and D3 guys get academic or other awards in lieu of athletic scholarships. It’s all a game.

I know guys come out of High School loving the game and still wanting to play - but I would not

want to play D3 football without some sort of Financial/Academic sholarship or support. You are likely to damage your body for no good reason.

I can understand still playing basketball and baseball for the fun of it.

FWIW, there are 240 D3 football programs, with another 4 that will join the ranks the fall.
