Jena: commentary on Wake Forest matchup

Nice work Jena!

49ers vs. Wake: Good deal, Charlotte Observer

The return game, set for the 2007-08 season, is targeted for Charlotte's new uptown arena, according to folks on the Charlotte campus.

Total crap.

People complain about us never getting to play a big name school. I don’t care where the game is at, it will help our program. I wonder if there will be a couple sections set aside for Charlotte fans at this game? I’d be nice to see alot of green at this game.

I wonder if Charlotte fans will get ticket priority since it is a home game for us (not a neutral site game). We better.

So who will bring out more fans?

QUOTE (Savio @ Jun 5 2005, 11:18 AM)

Charlotte will bring more fans. I lived in Winston for 2 years and could count the real live Wake students I met on one hand.

Be careful making those comments. I grew up in Winston and normally I would agree. However, this is not the Wake Forest of Dave Odom. Skip Prosser, like him or not, has done a great job with that program and in particular in getting the fans out through some of the best sports marketing I have seen. However, I would hope that our fans would get the best seats.

I am curious to see how the seating sets up for that game. I got a bad feeling we are getting crapped on big time for some reason with seating in that game. With all that Coach Prosser has said in the past how there is nothing to gain from playing us and yada yada I got a feeling there is more to that ticket situation then we know. I wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t split 50-50 in distribution.

Ironic that Indiana with all the history invovled with that program will come to Halton yet Wake will not. Same with Alabama.

clt is pulling his support from the program if we play at the new arena. f wake forest. make them play at the greensboro col. we play home games at halton. it is that simple.

Wake Forest wants the game to be in the new arena so they can have familiarity for the ACC tournament. It’s a smart move on their part.

And don’t expect good seats in the Joel. The Deacon Club is very selective with who sits on the sidelines and the students have good lower level seating. I would expect nothing better than upper level corner section seating.

Last season’s ticket packages for the Deacons:

Playing in the bob cathouse IS total CRAP. They’re only coming here so they can play there just before the acc tourney which will be there that march. How so frickin’ convenient. Maybe we can get some more acc teams to play us there that year too. How wonderful. Same old crap…playing the acc on their terms. BS!! And what GREAT timing too. Wonder what our team will look like then? My guess it will not have the talent we’ve seen recently and we’ll stink up the place as a favor to the ALMIGHTY acc. F*** OFF!!

Any word on who will broadcast the game? Regional coverage? National coverage?

Get over it people. Would you rather play Georgia St again at Halton? Not me, if that’s the way to upgrade our schedule, so be it.

The Arena game will be a Charlotte home game (part of the season ticket). Depending on where Wake sticks Niner fans in WS this year, the “favor” will be reciprocated. If we get bad seats in Joel, the Deac fans will get upstairs in Bobs Lair. All baseline to baseline seats on both sides are the property of the 49ers. Wake could get 30-40 seats behind their bench, but as I said above, we better get 30-40 in WS this year or all bets are off.

bleedsgreenandgold, the game is to be televised by ABC, but who knows at this point if it would be a national or regionally televised contest. My guess is that it will be regional but I hope I am wrong. Charlotte will not be seen on the ESPN networks as often as they have been, IMO. And if C-SET improves, that may not matter to those of us in this region.

Provider, the 30-40 deal means nothing to us as regular fans. They are player comp tickets and I feel certain their policy and the ACC’s is similar to ours and the Atlantic 10’s. Those seats are not for the general public but could go to the major donors should the athletic department staff decide to do so.

The Atlantic 10 policy in Article 5, Section 2, Rule 13 states…

13. TICKETS 13.01 Fifty (50) complimentary seats, Forty (40) of these must be directly behind the visitors’ bench. Fifty (50) additional tickets must be held for purchase by the visiting team, up until three days prior to the games. 13.02 These seats, if not used by the visiting team, shall remain unused/unsold, in order to create a “buffer zone” behind the visitor’s bench. (SEE SECTION 2, 9.02 FOR SECURITY FOR THE VISITING TEAM BENCH AND TICKET AREA) 13.03 Each institution will submit to the Commissioner a seating/court diagram, clearly marking the location of the visitor’s complimentary tickets, to ensure that the ticket policies are followed. 13.04 The forty (40) complimentary basketball tickets are to be held by the host institution for pick-up by a representative of the visiting team. These tickets are not to be mailed to the visiting institution. Upon arrival of the visiting team, enclosed with the tickets should be a seating/court diagram, indicating the location of the seats so that the visiting team representative can determine specific locations and seat assignments.
Now, while we are on attendance, who is to say the 49ers can fill up the lower bowl of the new Cathouse with our well-known "fair weather fans.?" Do you not think WFU has a few individual fans not smart enough to purchase seats in the lower level? Or will the ticket office say only season ticket holders and UNCC students are allowed tickets in the lower level, potentially leaving empty seats? My point is that, Duke-Davidson games have not drawn well in Charlotte. Can the 49ers get 9000-10000 of their own fans downtown? Will a Wake Forest-Charlotte game do any better? I'm anxious to find out, or for once and for all, I accept what we are..... :(

i’ll worry about the clt game in a few years… all i know is i’m wearing green, and gonna be loud at the ljvm come february.

Glad to see it. We need to raise our profile locally and this is the way to do it. Big game in showcase arena.

Wasn’t everyone bitching about the drop-off in schedule with the move to the A-10? It looks to me like the Athletic Department is doing something about. Now let’s start beating these top tier teams and really get some attention.

I would only be upset about playing uptown if it were a 2-for-1 deal. The fact that it’s only a 1-and-1 puts me in a position to not bitch about where our one game is considering how much we clamor to play the ACC. Would you rather have just 1 game (at Wake) or two games with one being in our hometown? I’m opting for the latter. If the community (and our own fans) weren’t so fickle, then we could turn the uptown arena into a nice homecourt advantage actually.

It’s just a given that you can’t ever please everyone.

Niner fan: I want a piece of an ACC team but they’re scared to play us!

Niner fan: We have to play Wake 7 minutes from our campus!!! That’s complete crap and we shouldn’t have to do that!!!

:stuck_out_tongue:

Again, with it only being 1-and-1, I feel like we should all be happy just to get a shot at them, regardless of where the game is at.

That about sums it up, jcl.

Lutz’s last quote about the NC State loss opening things up is interesting. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some more games with ACC teams in the near future. The matchup with State sure generated a lot of interest.
