John Fox & Co.

What are the general feelings on John Fox and his staff?

Personally, I’d really like to see Cowher or Gruden next year, since it doesn’t look like the Panthers are going to do much this year (Maybe I’ll be surprised.) Terry Bradshaw and others have pointed out the likely possibility of Cowher.

2 games in? seriously? he’s gonna stay here the entire season no matter what.

Eason will be calling for Lutz’s head if we don’t beat Asheville by more than 30.

I am not the first person to suggest John Fox is on the hot seat.

I would really like to get people’s opinions on his coaching style.

Blame the QB. Blame the OCs. Never blame John Fox.

Fox should have been shown the door a few years ago.

I disagree with this but he is definitely on the hot seat this year. I know everyone wants to see Cowher but what kind of money would he want?

still think seeing Gruden on our sidelines would be pretty awesome. I want a coach not scared to get in his players faces. Cowher did this too. I’d be happy with either one.

Hot seat? Really, his team went 12-4 and won the division last year…

I would rather not have a coach that has been out of the league for a few years. We need to get somebody in the Ravens system who can come in here and turn our defense around (see Ryan and NY Jets). We can get a new OC who is not a former O-Line coach. Somebody who can utilize Williams, Stewart, Smith and Goodson (and who knows how to draft at the WR position).

Fox gets fired because Hurney does. Any GM worth a crap will want his own guy…

Hurney needs to be fired yesterday.

The Peppers deal is terrible. Not only is he worth a fraction of what they are paying him, the entire D line stinks b/c they couldn’t afford to add anything above a stiff. Save the Kemo being hurt stuff, the D Line was terrible the last 8 games of last year when he played.

QB- Not only has the FO done nothing to solidify the future of the QB position, he signed Delhomme (not a top 25 QB) to a handcuff deal paying his way too much money

2010- Trading what is shaping up to be a top 8 pick for a 2nd round runt DE. Just think, Everett Brown might have been Jevan Sneed or Sam Bradford.

The direction is troubling.

...Somebody who can utilize Williams, Stewart, Smith and Goodson (and who knows how to draft at the WR and QB position).
fixed

True that. Fox considers it a sin to draft a QB period.

I understand frustration with Fox, but he’s a guy that can win a Super Bowl. You don’t get rid of that. Who are you going to bring in Cowher? How long was he at Pittsburgh before he won a title? Compare his career to Fox, not that different. Panthers have a tough schedule, I get it. They are going to lose some games this year, and the poor start doesn’t help.

But, the panthers were 1-15 before he got here. You sure you really want to go back to that? Look at how much trouble they’ve had in TB since they got rid of their head coach. The Ravens are the only team I can think of that have had much success after firing a SB caliber coach.

Yeah, some of their WR choices haven’t panned out, but they did draft Steve Smith.

Sam Bradford was a product of an outstanding 0-Line, I’m not sure he’s going to set the world on fire. Who was the last really jetsetting college QB to come to the NFL and succeed? Peyton Manning?

I mean, look at the guys that are starting QBs:
Rothelisberger - Miami, OH
Brady - Michigan (6th round pick, right?)
Flacco - Deleware
Brees - Purdue
Ryan - BC
E Manning - Ole Miss
P Manning - Tennesssee
Collins - Penn State
Pennington - Marshall
Palmer - USC
Rodgers - Cal
Cutler - Vandy
Orton - Purdue
Russell - LSU
Hill - Maryland

Russell is out of LSU, but I don’t know many people who wouldn’t label him as underwhelming. Carson Palmer is probably the most recent big name QB to have success in the NFL. Guys who play for national titles generally aren’t the best QBs. It’s why I think it is so funny that people christen SB victorys on the QB. It is very much a team game, the Panthers don’t need a Drew Brees type, but if they are going to get him, it’s likely not going to be from OU, Texas, Florida, or USC. It’ll be from UL-L, Temple or the Big 10.

This past Sunday they paid Peppers about 500K per tackle so I wouldn’t say that money is a big problem. It is hard for me to believe that no one wanted to trade anything of value for him.

John Fox seems to be this laid back, always on the players side, things will work out, we’ll be alright, it is what it is kind of guy. Even last year when we were 12-4, I didn’t think the Panthers had the ability to go very far. How can players be in training camp for so long and look so terrible in the first 4-5 games (I’m including preseason which was brutal along with Philly).

Just think new blood would do the organization a lot of good. And get rid of Peppers – $1 million a game. wow.

I think you have to give him credit for his good decisions too. Trading this year’s first rounder for Otah was a great deal. But I do agree with your criticisms of his decisions. I think it’s a little bit more than just cherry picking from a long career. He gambled here in the past couple of years because he and Fox were on the hot seat, and went all in. I think he knows it. He’s either going to bust or stay in the game, based on how this year plays out.

I’m personally pretty fed up with the Fox defensive philosophy. These things are always a matter of opinion, but I love aggressive, attacking defenses, the antithesis to what Fox believes. Seeing highly paid corners playing 10 yards off the receiver on 3 and 5, and not creating QB pressure aside from the same tired 4 man line rush has run its course. Everyone knows how to play us. Block our weak rush, and take the 5-15 yard gainers that are always open in our cover 2. We are the least feared 3rd down defense in the league. Other division teams are loading up on TE’s (Tony Gonzalez, Jeremy Shockey) and other similar options to exploit us. It’s time for a philosophy change.

Perosnally, if we played the same style as Pittsburgh, I’d do cartwheels of joy.

I don’t mind our basic offensive philosophy, though I wish our playcalling was crisper, more varied, involved the TE more, and we had a steady, reliable QB who wasnt prone to bad decisions, and coughing up the football.

You are correct, I am cherry picking a bit… He did have 3 great drafts in a row. The Otah pick was a good one, but that was adding a 1st for a future 1st (plus current year picks). Trading a future 1st for a 2nd hasn’t worked since Bobby Bethard was doing it every year in the early 80’s.

My beef with Hurney is that some of the deals he has crafted have striped the team of depth. Peppers don’t even need to be discussed. Chris Gamble is getting paid like Champ Bailey to play like Terry Cousin. Delhomme gets an extension and raise?? The Oline depth is shot and the D line is nonexistent all because there is no cap room. We have a big ticket item at every position, but unfortunately went to the clearance rack to fill in the gap in far too many key spots.

The think that pisses me off about Fox is that he is a defensive minded coach and the D has been putrid since last November. We could get a new DC every week but it’s still Fox’s defense. I’m with you… I’d rather be agressive, force the play and live witht he mistakes than play passive- hope for a stop defense.

I pretty mucha gree with you S. That Delhomme extension was very expensive in terms of cap room. Very odd to give an aging QB that kind of deal. Actually, probably a worse deal than tagging Peppers. Pepp could still pan out for us, either in draft picks or maybe we find a way to afford him. We’re pretty much stuck with Jake (who I dont love or hate).

I really dont think the Otah deal hurt us, but I agree, you cant do it every year. The trade for Brown is likely a bust. he’s just too small to justify the pick we gave up for him.

I don’t think they are planning on keeping him the length of the contract. They will probably cut him in a couple of years.

Yeah apparently the $20 mill guaranteed was actually only $12 mill, so its really not a bad contract at all.

If the owner wants to open up his wallet for a big name coach then I think Fox could be out if they have a bad season, but he has been burned once before on a “name” coach.
